NBC Universal is pulling its programming from iTunes. The two companies were unable to reach an agreement on pricing for digital downloads of NBC programming, so NBC was all, "Later, iTunes, I'm out."
NBC is the No. 1 supplier of digital video to Apple’s online store, accounting for about 40 percent of downloads. In other words: This is a huge blow to Apple's download service.
But you'll still be able to pick up Heroes re-runs: The current two-year deal extends through December, so NBC programming will stick around on iTunes at least until then.
After December, we have a feeling you'll be able to pick up NBC's programming through one or more of the eager, fledgling iTunes-killers out there, and we're nearly certain you'll be able to watch this stuff on Hulu.com, NBC's own video-portal that aims to rival youtube.
NBC Universal isn't the only media conglomerate with issues with iTunes' pricing. Vivendi already pulled their music catalog from the service, opting instead to market its music "at will" with Apple,, which would allow it to remove its songs from iTunes on short notice. Other media companies have gripes with iTunes price inflexibility as well.
The coming months will be interesting, as contracts with CBS, Discovery and the News Corporation come due.
