Reports surfaced on the internet this morning that the PlayStation 3's much heralded $100 price cut was nothing more than an attempt to sell the remaining stock of 60 gig models before selling only the 80 gig model this fall.
Officials at Sony Computer entertainment Europe – including president David Reeves, reportedly – said that the US price would still be $599 because that would be the only model on offer once 60Gig stocks ran out. That means the $100 price cut is more like an attempt to clear out stock, not a real price-cut.
Sony denied the rumor (started, seemingly, by themselves!) this morning. A spokesperson for Sony in the US told Next-Gen, "As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future."

UPDATE: In this video, Sony's Kaz Hirai seems to indicate that production is stopping on the 60gig PS3. It's a convoluted story, no?

When 360 increased it's HDD to 120GB thir raised the price when Sony increased their HDD it ultametley didn't cost the consumer a thing.

The 80 gig is the same price as the 60 gig before the price drop (just to sell the all the 60 models) so really you are not getting a tue price cut in the end......... Specially if you left with the same price just 20 more gig of memory.

It took 1 week for Microsoft to send me a new system and then gave me a month of live and a 360 game.

But as I stated earlier, I don't think sony would do that. They may, but it would be a bad decision. And if the US guy is being honest, then we still do have the 60 and 80 gig models. and if THAT is true, your argument is null and the price drop is real.

@darkjedimaster I didn't mean to say the 360 HDD is upgradeable I ment it's not EASILY done. In the 360 after you upgrade you may not be able to use all of your XBL functions due to DRM security issues. In the PS3 you just simply transfer the data and there you go. The PS3 swaap is easy.

Mr._Gone i agree, but i think that when one game gets rated a 5 out of 5 on xplay and gets good ratings (maybe heavenly sword or lair) then maybe people will start mentioning that over and over.
what sony has to do now is kepp the games coming , keep there exclsuives, and maybe cut the price a lil bit more in december.

Anyways, it's clever idea to drive up sales of the PS3. Which means a bigger install base by the years end. By then, they'll have the software to make everyone lust for a PS3. Regardless the price.
I still don't think it's a bad thing all in all. $600 for what you're getting is pretty damn good. (We've all seen their 07 and 08 line up. Its pretty damn impressive)
No more games Sony, just stick with 1 SKU and grind this out.

On the other hand, Xbox does have a smart plan for the long run, when 360 is dying, they will have a pretty powerful system for the bargain bin. All in all, its more of a race against time to see how Sony and Microsoft execute their plans for their consoles and respectively the next-next generation consoles.

Canceling the production of your "next gen" system 8 months after you released it because you're having to come out with a better one is NOT a good sign for the future of the PS3.
Sony needs to stop worrying about 2017 and come back to 2007, the year in which thier beloved PS3 is dying...quickly.
Also, people say that it took a year for the 360 to get any good games. So following that example, people expect Sony to start making a headway once it gets games in about a year. But the difference is that Sony doesn't have the luxury of waiting. At the time, the 360 didn't have competition. The PS3 does. So if Sony is going to act, it better act quick.
