Nintendo Announces 'WiiWare'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, June 27, 2007 8:17 AM

WiiWare is coming!

At a developers conference this week, Nintendo announced the introduction of WiiWare , a game-creation service that will allow developers to create downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel.

We're not talking moldy old Turbo Grafx games; WiiWare will be original content. It's a perfect place for the incubation of the next killer Wii app.

"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."

The content will be completely user/developer driven, with Nintendo only checking new games for technical glitches, opening the Wii to anyone with a big idea and a dream.

The first WiiWare content will launch in early 2008.

Nintendo's strategy of focuisng solely on gameplay, and what looks pretty 2nd has been working for 20+ years, wise up people.

And Sony looks to the heavens when they don't understand why there sweet game that plays for 5 hours won't sell.

This is good news. I've been thinking of getting back into sound production for videogames, so this and the 360's tools for the same thing should be great for small developers.

wait, did I understand that right though? Did that mean that we? the games can get ahold of this too and make games to put out on the net?

Dmack73PS3, Majority of the games on the Wii are exclusive. I can name 10 exclusive titles off the top of my head that are already out.

If they are going to allow you to do this via the Opera net connection, then maybe somewhere down the road they have the idea of doing online multiplayer. Welcome to the next-gen Mario. SSBB online? YES!

Im not sure what this means. Does it mean that they are going to allow wii users to make video games, and then put them onto the virtual console for other wii users to buy?
And i cant wait till wii gets online if it does.

That's cool they are basically giving small time developers free reign.

Now lets see some games with online play!

It would be cool to be able to make my own wii game. Also I think microsoft is doing the same thing some where on their website you can get free game developer kit that allows you to make pc and 360 games. But in the end I can't wait to start buying new games instead of old games that will only keep my attention for 15 minutes

w00t! i love games with map editors! this will make me want to buy the wii, if it's promising enough! with far cry: predator's amazing map editor only being a side item of the game, an entire tool of a game with online sharing capabilities will be friggin SWEET!!! any worse than time splitters, though, and i'll have to slap nintendo officials.

This is great for nintendo and not sony because it will be better than the downloadable content on the 360
