It appears Apple has switched their hand model for the iPhone to someone with a bigger kung-fu grip. The iPhone hasn't changed at all, but this dude's sausage fingers makes it look smaller. Sneaky stuff, Apple.
The left picture is from the original ad campaign, while the one to the right is from the new one. Maybe they haven't switched their model and the guy has just gone through a rough patch and put on a few pounds. The world may never know.
