Sony Developing Razor-Thin Displays

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, May 25, 2007 8:57 AM

In case you haven't heard: We're living in a science fiction movie. Sony has developed a razor thin video display (pictured) that is 0.3 millimetre (0.01 inch)-thick.

"In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person's wrist, even worn as clothing," said Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa. "Perhaps it can be put up like wallpaper."

The display combines Sony's organic thin film transistor, or TFT, technology, which is required to make flexible displays, with another kind of technology called organic electroluminescent display.

We don't know what that means, but video wallpaper brings us one step closer to Blade Runner, and that is awesome.

Video under the cut. Hot damn!

Daily Mail: Razor-thin TV screen you can wear as a T-shirt

If I was the alien that crashed my ship and spawned all this technology, I would sue everyone.

Posted by RedWolf31k - Friday, May 25, 2007 12:54 PM

They should have put this in the PS3

Posted by acydtrip - Friday, May 25, 2007 1:04 PM

This is 2- 5 year old tech. They've been demoing the flexible display for 4 years now license from a US firm out of Massachusetts. Funny this article didn't mention the higher resolution LG/Phillips display. http://www.pcworld.com/article /id,132249-page,1/article.html

Omg, pocket movies! Or, pocket newspapers. It could be like a newspaper that you pick up at the store, put in your pocket, and updates everyday via WiFi.

Posted by qO_Op - Friday, May 25, 2007 2:22 PM

@ acydtrip,

Nobody said anything about the flexibility it was the width of it . 0.3 millimeteres

Posted by spitfirec4 - Friday, May 25, 2007 2:31 PM

Posted by Abraxas - Friday, May 25, 2007 6:47 PM

Like any new tech, it will debut expensive, but soon enough it will come down to less extravagent prices. Think large screen tube tv's, then LCD, then Plasma, now this. VHS, DVD, HD-DVD/Blue-Ray.

Posted by bg_502 (BANNED) - Saturday, May 26, 2007 12:01 AM

that is insane, that is almost cooler than the cure for cancer (still waiting), there are so many possibilities, a lighter version of the psp, a news paper or magazine you subscibe to and it updates via wifi, video wall paper, scaring old people, super thin pda's, a hd video game headset for you next gen console, virtual money, the possibilities are endless, and oh yea is sony steals my ideas, I will F*#@k'n pown you!!!!!!!

Posted by Buffmaster - Saturday, May 26, 2007 5:54 AM

This reminds me of Minority Report.

Posted by FreshCut_T70 - Saturday, May 26, 2007 10:52 AM

It would be fun to wake up in the mourning and have your whole wall be a moving landscape or still or outerspace or have your whole room be the landscape of the vid game your playing.

Posted by neonchez - Saturday, May 26, 2007 3:46 PM

Posted by sim527 - Sunday, May 27, 2007 10:23 PM

wowza! add a few touch sensative controls and you have the most space efficient laptop or cell phone!
you could even make a flight simulator by using it as the window of the plane...
awesome

Posted by sim527 - Sunday, May 27, 2007 10:36 PM

or imagine a sub with cameras outside that send video to these new screens that line the inside walls,
forget glass bottom boats, how about glass everything submarines.
theres just too many possabilities,
mirror mazes will never be the same,
t.v. will be everywhere, and so will ads,
world hunger and war will end(maybe not)

Posted by Grzzzt - Monday, May 28, 2007 5:05 AM

Hmmm instead of bulky monitors and cords for vitals for patients in hospitals a simple wearable sensor patch. Dick Tracy wrist vidphones, lightweight rear monitor for your car,and my brain just went *erk* trying to think of all the possibilities. I can't even make a joke for once!

Posted by Logan22 - Monday, May 28, 2007 7:04 AM

Where's the paper cell phone from Ultraviolet?

Posted by bucherbag - Monday, May 28, 2007 12:18 PM

Posted by yuergo - Monday, May 28, 2007 12:48 PM
