the bigger harddrive is important if you are a user of the marketplace. The 360 is more than a gaming console. It covers ALL media. I'm glad they didn't include HD or Blu ray, it would only up the price on a scam format war. Skip the format war and go to Digital Downloads for movies.

ELITE has a hard drive twice that of the "ps3", includes an HDMI cable out of the box, and umm I'm pretty sure the "ps3" is also black. Does that mean that the "ps3" is last gen? At least the 360 comes in white and black. It's called choices "GamePro". Considering the fact that you can download movies, TV shows, and soon watch TV on your 360, what is not ELITE? Finally, what right does "GamePro" have to say that current 360 owners are getting screwed over? We all knew it was coming, if you didn't than your not a hardcore gamer and have no need for the ELITE.

I'm a huge Xbox supporter but I do agree with number 1 that GamePro said. I do think it's confusing customers on whether they should get the Xbox 360 or should they wait for the Elite and then there probably saying what's the Elite anyway and that's when they decide to buy a Wii :(. Then there's going to be people who just bought the Xbox 360 Pro and they'll take it back with receipt or whatever to get the Xbox 360 Elite instead.

8 reasons why tha elite sucks
1. Three 360s is one too many. Currently there are two Xbox 360 models available, and that's already a stretch. Yeah, it's about choice, but it's also about reducing confusion when presenting a prospective buyer with a product. Having three SKUs available to consumers makes it seem like Microsoft doesn't know what it wants to be. Hardcore gamers (like many of you reading this) are sure to do their due diligence when deciding on a game system, but keep in mind that hardcore gamers are the minority. Most gamers purchase a platform with very little research other than selecting which system supports the game(s) they want play.

2. It's still cheaper than the PS3. Cheap is a good thing. But for something to be considered "Elite," in theory it should probably also be the most expensive product on the market. Try as Microsoft may, when looking at price alone, PS3 still has the "elite" advantage when viewed by the affluent upper-class, the same class the $479 Elite is aimed at. Sure, the $499 PS3 just died and $299-399 Xbox 360 models will still prevail, but Microsoft's price advantage over the PS3 just got a whole lot smaller.

3. No wireless networking. C'mon. This is just inexcusable. Even the DS with its 12 year-old computing technology supports wifi. There's no excuse for what's being dubbed as "elite" not to include this inexpensive, widely used networking standard. Microsoft can pimp "choice" all they want on this one, but who doesn't want wi-fi? Sample: "No, I don't ever want wireless networking, so don't make me pay the $10 wholesale price of adding it." Preposterous.

4. The current 10 million 360 owners are getting the shaft. Microsoft says the Elite isn't aimed at existing customers but for niche HD enthusiasts who still don't own an Xbox 360. Fair enough, but didn't Microsoft just get done telling existing 360 owners that bigger hard drives and HDMI video were unnecessary? Why the sudden shift in philosophy? Even new Elite owners may be getting the shaft as Microsoft will continue to optimize all Xbox Live Marketplace content for the 20GB hard drives, possibly making the Elite's 120GB drive a moot point. And by further segmenting the Xbox 360 platform, no one version benefits as game developers must consider each when developing games and testing hardware. The largest common denominator typically wins.

By not including a more efficient, cooler-running 65 nanometer processor, we assume the Elite will continue to pump out an irritating racket when turned on, primarily due to its noisy cooling fan. Usually, loud-running consumer electronics are more akin to discount products, not the high-class "elite" as the name implies. This will totally ruin our experience while we drink Cristal and listen to Vivaldi (yes, we're audio snobs).

6. No HD-DVD bundle. Is the Elite trying to be a multimedia device or not? Not including an HD-DVD drive just feels underdeveloped, and something Microsoft could have used to juice up excitement for the Elite. Of course, we can't help but suspect that the increasing popularity of Blu-ray had something to do with the decision to exclude HD-DVD this time around. Furthermore, the add-on drive will not be released in black for Elite owners still wanting HD-DVD support. That'll look real classy on your entertainment center; the black-and-white cookie look is so in this year.

7. Someone tell Microsoft that white is the "new black." Sure, Microsoft needs to differentiate from ghostly white Wiis and pastel-colored Apple products, but white -- not black -- is where the good stuff is right now in consumer electronics. Microsoft wisely went with white the first time around, so why the change without letting Elite owners decide on a color? And don't even try to sell a monochrome variation at a premium. Since when did I have to pay more for a black car?

8. The machine isn't intended for gamers. Ultimately, the Elite has nothing to do with enhancing the gameplay experience; it's for multimedia whores. HDMI, a larger hard drive, new movies and TV content? Great. Remind me why the gamer in me cares? How will the Elite improve my games? From a game saving and demo download standpoint, a 20 GB hard drive is more than enough (hint: you were right the first time, Microsoft). After all, despite whom Elite is being pitched to, gamers are the ones really buying the product.

in the mail, bob takes it up to his room and places it between his ps3 and wii.

bob had bought the ps3 at his local bestbuy, for about 400$. he also bought mgs4, littlebigplanet, racthet and clank, as well as a few sixaxis controllers incorperated with the new rumble feature.

before awnsering the door to recive his 360, bob was creating a level on littlebigplanet to show to his friends online. his ps3 had a 180gig hdd and 5 controllers.

whatever. it just shows that downloadable content is becoming the new way we experienence media. no hd-dvd because this is probably going to be the last true "format" war anyway, movies are next in line to get the itunes treatment and become more readily availible for online customers (who will eventually be everyone). and how popular is xbox arcade and wii's virtual console right now? at least some of that populairity has to be due to the incredible ease of just freaking downloading what you want to play. imagine all your media content on your 120 gig hard drive. i think that is the direction we are really headed, and the inclusion of the larger hard drive doesn't necessairily prove that's what microsoft had in mind, but they are at least preparing to allow people to store all the downloadable content that they provide efficiently.

bob had bought his xbox 360 when it launched, in 2005, this was the 3rd time he had to send it in for repairs and was considering getting a new one for 250$ at walmart. It had been getting alot of attention when halo 3 launched a few months earlier, but it gave him the three red lights, and he payed for the repairs.

eager to get back on halo 3, he powers up his 360 to test it. it works, as he attempts to sign into xbl, he is notified that his subscription has expired and that he needs to renew it.

he promises to do so tomorrow, so he turns off the 360 for now, and gets back onto making his level on littlebigplanet.

it's getting late, and bob runs folding@home and switches to the wii, he checks the weather and makes another mii. he turns it off after about 15 minutes.

after renewing his xbox subscription the next day, bob gets on halo 3. he invites a few friends to join him in a game, and they maul each other for about an hour.(it may be a new game but its the same fps as the previous 2)

they switch over to littlebigplanet so they can create a brand new, insane level.

after having thier laughs while crashing a skboard through a 50 foot tower of wooden blocks, they meet up at home to to do a quick game of pool.

and then reitre to thier apartments to talk about new designs on little big planet levels, and if thier going to buy the new ps3 game in development from crytech thats supposed to come out next month.

they turn all switch over to folding@home, and fall asleep to the sound waves and rotating planet that it displays.

ps3- will be used on a dail basis, mabye being played for 1-5 hours a day. half of this time will be spent on games, the other half will be ps home, videos, music, remoteplay over a long disttance and folding@home. and will conutinue to run strong due to constant updates throughout the consoles life until the next generation.

360-will be played 1-3 or 4 hours a day, bxl may become obsolite, most time will prob ably ne spent on halo3 and gears of war 2. in 5 or 6 years, due to lack of quiality in the build of the machine and a lack of new games, it will probably end up like the gamecube in the longrun.

wii- will be played 0 to 45 minutes daily, lack of massive online playabillity and its last gen like graphics will ultamitaly be it's downfall and sales will diedown to about 20,000 sales a month.

I think they should have put in a HD-DVD drive, that would have made the elite truely elite and make it easier for developers in the future. Plus, with blu-ray selling at 3-1 ratio to HD-DVD, it probably could have help put a dent in the sales of blu-ray. I don't know how big of an effect the PS3 has on blu-ray sales, but the fact it is $300 cheaper I believe then the next blu-ray player has to help. I think that MS is really going to regret not putting a HD-DVD drive on the 360.
Plus why put HDMI on the system if the only way you can watch full 1080p movies is by downloading them from marketplace or buying a $200 USB add on. I think it much easier to go bestbuy and buy the movie, then let it take up space on HDD. Right now xbox has the games, sony is still trying to figure out how to program for PS3, and Nintendo can't meet demand. It's going to be interesting a year from now.

the reason the 360 has somewhat better graphics than the ps3 is that the 360 has already been out for a year. it takes time for developers to unleash the full potential of a console. the ps3 has only been out for 5 months and you can barley tell the difference between the two. another few months and the ps3 will be well beyond anything the 360 is capable of.

as for the "elite", my ps3 already has everything the "elite" has and more. and yes, there is a lack of games at the moment, it is something all consoles(including the 360)go through in the first months of release. i'm not saying the 360 sucks, i'm sure i'll buy one. i am saying that when i do buy one i will not buy the "elite", why pay extra for the things i already have on my ps3.

Actually I plan to upgrade to the Elite and when PS3 gets some decent games that I have not played already on 360, I will get one of them also--especially since the price is dropping... By my gawd quilliry, your little Bob story sounded just ghay, you need to take a break from all the 360 hatin...
And to Cochi--360 and PS3 utilize their graphics chips differently. On 360, it has all 512 MB available to it at once, on PS3 it has only 128 or 256 MB to it at once for graphics... Read up on it.

1. The over abundance of 360 models is confusing to the consumer and unnecessary
-If three versions of a console confuses you then you are to stupid to be playing games-

2. The word “Elite” conjures up images of high class and wealth and with the Xbox 360 Elite still being cheaper than the PS3, it doesn’t live up to its namesake

i dont see the higher price tag with a few new features and a new colour worth the cost differnce to those who already own one. Just my personal take, sure the storeage space would be nice, but for the price difference i would have like to seen HD-DVD or maybe even bluetooth intigrated.
I just would've liked to see more of an upgrade, the upgrade to elite isnt a leap, just a step.

And sony is hinting at releasing a new one, its not set in stone. Though i wouldnt be surprised to see it happen, i doubt it will for a while.

All in all i think my current 360 is fine, and i prefer the white colour, its slicker imo.

The new consoles are way to expensive, for what you are buying. I think consoles should just be consoles and be done with it. I already have a computer for online stuff and a dvd player. That is why nintendo is stomping in sales, cause they know what gamers care about....games. The other crap is way too steep in price.

I dont know about you chicagobear, but $400 for a console that has a lot of great games to play and has a really intuitive way to keep in touch with my friends (and playgames with them online) is really not that bad. Unless of course, your mom pays for everything.

Are people really that slow? If you call something "Elite" and it is not the best thing on the market then guess what, it shouldn't be called elite. The "Elite" should have been called exactly what it is, "the Xbox 360 that should have been the Premium, but we forgot to add a larger harddrive and HDMI outputs the first time, and this time we still forgot the WiFi, damn." Look out for the Xbox 360 Elite Premium to come out around Christmas, that one will probably have the built in WiFi, probably.

But I still can't figure out what causes so much rage when a system is dissed or praised. What the F do you care what someone says about it, as long as you enjoy it what the hell does it matter?!?!? Stop trying to justify your purchase and just start enjoying the gaming experience.

I also don't understand why gamers get pissed off when a game (ie. DMC4, GTA4, etc.) go multiplatform. What the hell does it matter. If anything you should be happy about it since the gaming company that made it will make more money thus having more money to put into the next game and make it that much better!!!

i need something that is able to play movies whenever i want for as long as i want, not once over 24 hours and then lose the movie. i need something that has free online because i can't keep shoveling out $50/13months for online for the next 4-5 years, i need wi-fi because all our cables and crap, including our linksys wireless router are on the 2nd floor and the living room is on the 1st floor, and i need something that can read SD cards because i use them for my wii and pics/vids from my camera and i can't find anything else that's compatable.

(g4 must be swamped today, my internet's glitchy, or these are just crappy servers 'cuz i can't get their pages to load for crap)

the problems i have are that it doesn't really fit well for most people. the movie downloads aren't nearly as good as the blu-ray/hd-dvd option because they require a lot of patience and/or a really fast internet connection that isn't available to over half the people in the US. a lot of people get DSL and almost all service providers supply routers for $5 extra a month. having to buy the wireless adaptor for the 360 is stupid, especcially when wi-fi is a standard anymore on almost all harware and both ninty and sony are using it. no-one should have to pay for a subscription service that has ads in it. if there are ads in XBL then XBL should be free. if XBL is a subscription service i have to pay for, it shouldn't have ads.

the 360 elite is barely worth $80 over the premium system for nothing but 100gigs extra on the HDD and an HDMI port. component caples can output at 1080p no problem, and i shouoldn't have to buy movies online i have to download and only have for 1 day, i should be able to pop in a disc and watch away, and if i could do the hd-dvds without the external drive, i wouldn't need 120gigs for 1 day downloads. i also need the multimedia card reader because i don't own an mp3 player and i don't know of a single camera that records in jpeg video format so i need something i can put converted files back onto my sd card with so i can get the most out of my wii because that's all i'm missing out of that.

the ps3's processing power is vastly superior to the 360's and the blu-ray drive offers over 4x the disc space the 2x layer DVDs the 360 uses. the only proof anyone would need to see how much more of an advantage the ps3 has over the 360 power-wise is to listen to what's said durring the IGN interview on lair. the 360 has had several years to build up it's online community and it has a very expansive one. the ps3 has had a few months and it already has well over 1,000,000 users and counting. PS Home may be just another "Mii Too" approach from sony, but it's freeaking awesome none the less, and it alone will sell a great deal of PS3s. who doesn't want to pimp out their virtual crib with with physics-based items and virtual tvs and stuff showing off porn to everyone including innocent minors just because they can?

PS3:
-$600(system)+$60(game)+$25( good Blu-Ray movie)=a whole lot of bang for your buck and a whole lot less than the closest a 360 can get.
yes, there are more options to the 360, and it is a great system, but it's by no means awe-inspiring and the overall value isn't that great. it takes $50 more on the 360 side to match just the basics of the PS3 and there is still a lot missing after going past $815.

right now i'm stuck with just a wii, and until i have a solid game for it (i.e. re4/smg/mp3/ssbb/pbr/ddoc) i greatly regret it, i'm hoping to get a better laptop by the end of the summer, and hopefully by christmas i'll have a PS3. if they release a 360 with wi-fi and i have the extra cash on hind i'll pick it up in a heartbeat just for H3, but until there aren't so many reasons to get one over the other the better deal goes.

Bobo_Du_Hobo you are full of shit my friend. I seriously doubt you only own a Wii because you go to such lengths to bash the 360. How come in your posts about PS3 you don't go through all the iterations that they have? They release two different consoles as well if I can recall...
As to the graphics issue. DO YOUR RESEARCH! The disc has nothing to do with the quality of the graphics in a game. That's like saying my PC is better than yours because I have a bigger hard disc so the graphics will be better on it. It makes no sense. The total accessable graphics memory on the PS3 is 224 MB where the 360 has 480 MB VRAM. Want more specs?

ps3- new, expensive, powerful, shit for games, but its the word "NEW" that sets it apart. sony will come out on top like it always does because they always surprise people. in a few months it will eventually lower the price, have better games and come out on top. although i still think Nintendo is the master when it comes to the handheld even though i own a PSP.

xbox 360- over a year old, is JUST now coming out with ok games, 3 different systems (which is stupid to begin with) and is using every flaw that sony has to make there system look better and not to mention stealing there games. microsoft is desperate. f*** you bill gates! take it in the ass from Bush!

If you throw in the price of a wifi adapter ($479 + $99) the elite 360 is ALMOST the SAME price as the ps3 ($599)...Except the elite has FAR LESS FEATURES..Aside from the 120 gb HD...It's still not a deal...considering you still DON'T get a 3 type memory card reader, Wifi, and a high def format player...(x-box should just drop HD-DVD and switch too blue-ray)
So let's see...

Well my xbox got the dreaded three rings of death saturday,i called microsoft they said they would get the coffin out to me,in 3 business days,its been 4 so i called,they said it wouldnt be there till the 30th,6 business days,LIES!they originally said 14 business days until i get one back and now are saying 28 buisness days,LIES!,they argued the 3-5% defect rate,LIES!the rep. even suggested that when i get the system back i could sell it and upgrade to the elite,HA!after todays experience with microsoft's customer support i may actually sell my 360 but i damn sure wont buy another one!

nintendo is the best system right now why becuase its cheap, but the wii remote stinks and much of there games arent that good, but what are the chances of u sending it in for repair. xbox360 takes ur money all the time which makes it more expensive then the ps3 they charge u for internet they charge for games and patches and then ur xbox360 gets the ring of death wow thanks ms then ur sending it in 4 repair, next thing u know theres another 360 coming now u feel like an idiot. All the 360 has is 2 games gears of war and halo 3(which didnt come out yet) i thought dead rising was a good idea but nobody talks about it so now i think its boring. The ps3 is expensive only at the start and what i heard thats only when buying it i dont know if the ps3 online is free but i see no1 says it isnt but there is hardly any games for it right now and sony knows that. thats why the ps2 is still hot cuase it still gets good games.

my 360 died 4 months to the day. i got i on 12/25/06 and it died on 4/25/07. now that sucks im geting it fix for free but how do i know it wount happen agien?

There really isn't a "better system" right now. I own a 360 and a PS3 right now and each of them deffinately have their own area's they accel at. (though admittedly the 40gb PS3's... why sony?) 360's DLC alot alot better because you basically get what you pay for, PS3's online drown you with alot of content and demo's of nearly all new games to try before you buy. PS3's can have a 320gb hard drive thrown in just buy stopping a circut city and picking up the 2.5" laptop models...

while the Xbox 360 honestly has the exclusive games that just made it worth buying (halo francise, gears of war) While I wish XBOX had included a HD-DVD drive I think it might have been smart on their part blue-ray has deffinately been coming out on top for HD home media. Xbox's overtake playstation as far as software and titles, its just hardware they need to work on (things PS3 has I wish my XBOX had.... wireless controllers which need no batteries, WiFi access for media and web browsing, media card slots, bluetooth wireless connectability for keyboards, headsets, etc. and a hard drive built to PC spec saving money when upgrading)

BTW, Gamepro... really? Thought they went the way of PSM. Well nice to see they still have a job... for now
