Mark Wahlberg has signed on to star in The Happening, the next film from the much-maligned M. Night Shyamalan, about a professor who takes his family on the run after an 'apocalyptic threat' rears its head. Perhaps the 'apocalyptic threat' will be the script, which, in Shyamalan's case, has been a case of diminishing returns since Unbreakable. Does anyone remember Signs? How about Lady In The Water? None too good, and none too successful.
Also, Shyamalan has been a notorious flake over the course of the last couple of years, allegedly breaking down in a restaurant when executives trashed his Lady script. And he has this thing about putting himself in his films, and he's not a good actor. Still, Wahlberg is a good actor, so they're on the right track there, but Lady damn near killed all of the momentum that Paul Giamatti built up as a character actor over the years, so it might be career poison.
