Russell Crowe is being bandied about as the choice to play Sherlock Holmes in the next film about the famed British investigator and inventor of deductive reasoning. Apparently, this project has the blessing of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle estate (which might mean no more than that the estate needs money and is running out of options). The rumor is also that Holmes will be a lot tougher in this version of the story.

Great. That's all we need. One of the great intellectuals of all time being portrayed as a thug, by a thug. Isn't it enough that intelligence is being bred out of our society at every possible turn? Does one of the great thinkers of all time, even fictionally, have to be 'toughened' up, because our society dictates that people who use their minds to fight with can't be heroes?
