Well, bad news for Sony fans in Europe. No, the long-awaited PS3 isn’t being delayed… again. Rather, Sony has opted to drop one of the processing chips from the hardware, thus allowing Sony to start moving toward the black much sooner than initially expected.
The being removed from the systems was the Sony-built chip that allowed the PS3 to functionally operate PS2 games. This is bad news for European buyers as it means that European PS3s will be virtually incapable of any backwards compatibility.
The Japanese and American versions of the systems will still carry the PS2 operating chip.
In other news, Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo totally pwned Phil Harrison at GDC.
