Steven Spielberg: Videogame Designer

Posted March 9, 2007 - By Eugene Morton

Nobody can deny that Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest movie directors of all time, but can he hack it in the gaming industry?  We’ll get a chance to find out as a partnership between Hollywood’s greatest director and the gaming industry’s biggest publisher, Electronic Arts has been announced.

At least one of the two projects is being made for the Wii and if the words of EA’s Vice President and General Manager, Neil Young are to be believed then both games, no matter what platform they appear on, are going to be huge.

"The first one, what I can tell you is what you'd expect, sort of, from a Steven Spielberg production. Steven's stories are intimate stories that take place around huge, world-changing events... sort of, big stories shown through the eyes of a small group. Doug Church is producing it...

The second project is something Lou Castle is producing, one of the great producers in this industry, and that's one of the products we're building for the Wii. Very exciting and interesting..."

There’s no doubting Spielberg’s talent, but one of the man’s last big movies, War of the Worlds was trashed by moviegoers. Let’s hope he comes up with something original and doesn’t go back to the well on this one. Honestly, when we first heard about Spielberg making videogames, we shuddered with fear at the prospect of Schindler's List: The Game.
