Miyamoto Talks Nintendo At GDC

Posted March 8, 2007 - By Stephen Johnson

Nintendo president Shigeru Miyamoto greeted the industry professionals at the Game Developers Conference this morning to the typical enthusiasm he receives at industry events. His keynote address was long on Nintendo philosophy and short on bombshells, although the following news was announced:

  • Miyamoto is working on a channel that will allow people to compete in popularity contests with their Miis.
  • Elements of Mario 128 were used in Pikmin, and will appear in Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Mario Galaxy will be out "this year."

Miyamoto related Nintendo's philosophy to his family, using his wife's reaction to games and ideas as a bellwether of how non-gamers might respond to Nintendo's offerings.

Miyamoto also discussed the consistency of the Wii's vision, mentioning that Wii Sports Baseball originally "starred" Mario and company, but the Miis proved more popular, and also, interestingly, that he'd like to design a more realistic baseball game for the Wii.
When Miyamoto designs, he imagines the face of the player as they play, he said. We think that's nice
