A 330-pound Chinese gamer is more hardcore than you: The teacher in the northeastern China played "online games" for a week almost non-stop, then keeled over dead. The unnamed gamer was on a vacation and was, apparently, bored.
Boredom during long holidays in China is supposedly a huge problem. Xu Yan, a Chinese teacher, told the China Daily: "There are only two options. TV or computer. What else can I do in the holiday as all markets, KTV and cafeterias are shut down?" (TheFeed, as always, suggests riding your bike.)
According to international news service Reuters: "China has seen an alarming rise in the number of teenage and young adult Internet addicts in recent years...About 2.6 million -- or 13 percent -- of China's 20 million Internet users under 18 are classed as addicts."
TheFeed thinks this entire story is ridiculous. Hey, Reuters, maybe, instead of reprinting bogus figures about "internet addiction," you could tell us what the guy actually died from? We have our money on death by health problems brought on by morbid obesity, but that doesn't make for a very sexy non-news story. Throw in "he died from gaming!" and you have something that people will pay attention to...no matter how ridiculous it actually is.
