It's a smart move, really. Hot off the heels of the award-winning The Departed, Leonardo DiCaprio is mining the same sources to make another crime drama. Exactly the same sources, to be accurate. Confessions of Pain is a film made by the same production team that made Infernal Affairs, the film that was remade into The Departed. This is the film that DiCaprio and William Monahan, the screenwriter that wrote the adaptation of Infernal Affairs, will work on next.
It's kind of a slam dunk, but does it say something about the state of American filmmaking when all of the good ideas for movies come from somewhere else? Isn't there a writer out there somewhere who's doing something original? We'd better hope so, because soon our industry will be nothing more than a service for adapting decent films from other sources.
