Earth Plays Dodgeball With An Asteroid

April 13th, 2036....

Do you know where you will be? Having pancakes I hope! Cause it may be your last chance.

Straight out of the movies Deep Impact and Armageddon, a group of astronauts and engineers are pointing to a big gray thing moving in our solar system that carries the potential of wiping us out of existence. Apophis, an asteroid traveling closer and closer towards Earth, will be passing us within a distance less than 10,000 miles. Um....GULP...maybe even a DOUBLE GULP!

Acknowledging the potential of impact, these scientists believe that it is important to research ways to prevent this from happening. No, they are not talking about strapping Bruce Willis to a rocket and exploding nuclear weapons aboard the asteroid...seriously! Instead they are just looking at nuclear weapons.

Why not just have Superman round up all of the nuclear missiles in the world and hurl them into space? Oh wait, that was Superman IV.

Trying to take a more realistic approach, the scientists are looking at using a satellite whose gravity could nudge the large object off course. If that doesn't work: Nuclear weapons. I mean come on, if we are all going to die in a fireball, might as well go out watching some amazing fireworks!
