Apple iPhone Is Here

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 09, 2007 10:01 AM

Apple's Steve Jobs dropped some huge news at his keynote speech at the annual Macworld Expo today. The much-discussed and anticiapted Apple iPhone is here!

The mobile phone will, according to Jobs, combine three breakthroughs in communications: Computers, cell-phones and internet communicators. CIngular is the U.S. partner.

The phone will run Mac OS X and is, according to Jobs, ahead of everything other phone out there.

According to Jobs, the iPhone will be easy to use, smart and well-designed. It will not have a keyboard, but will features a stylus-free, patented "multi-finger" touchscreen interface. (Sounds pretty cool... but will it be intuitive enough?)

iPhone has a 160 pixels per inch screen. It connects with your iPod, and syncs with iTunes to shows video and pictures and play MP3s. Allows real-times scrolling of music either stored on the phone or through connected iPod.

Here's some real sci-fi crap:

  • Contains motion-sensors to detect orientation. So if you hold it sideways, the display will flip to accomdate you.
  • Automatically senses when you put it to your ear and turns off sound and picture.
  • Senses ambient light levels and adjusts display to optimum quality.

It's only 11mm wide, too. Okay, it worked. I want one.

The 8gig model retails for $599 and the 4Gig for $499. It drops in June.

looks like i'll be buying a new phone soon

Posted by highscorefilms - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 11:04 AM

Sadly, from the reports I read, it's for Cingular only.

Well, I guess I'll be changing phones AND my service company come June...

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 11:39 AM

I have cingular and the phone looks super cool but damn 500 dollars on that is some shit. And i would need to increase my phone plan.

Posted by Spartan_458 - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 11:43 AM

i smell another PS3.......

$599 and $499 for a phone? please, i could get a phone that actually makes calls for about $20. you don't need a frickin' computer operating system on a cell phone unless you're some sort of media-addicted freak or steve jobs. and at that price, i'm not sure who is actually going to buy it. think about it. it does everything the iPod does, except it makes phone calls and does other useless junk. all this for the low, low price of $599! oh wait, you only get 4 GB/8 GB of memory! there goes your video support! really apple, this is going wayyy too far. this whole thing sounds like a piece of sh*t to me anyway. plus cingular isn't all that great of a carrier. they have horrible reception and horrible customer service.

Posted by bbgun2500 - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 11:46 AM

I smell a negative nancy!

Posted by AngleH - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 11:48 AM

Spartan has some good points. I was under the impression it was 40 GB for $299, but that was for the TV thing... whatever the hell that is.

People who complain about the price of new technology guess what, you are not in that product's demographic so just wait 3 or 4 years until the technology is old enough for you to afford.

Here is a news flash, ground breaking technology cost money. Yes you can buy a phone that makes calls for $20, hell you can get a phone for free that makes phone calls, but they are not trying to sell this phone to people who only want to make phone calls. They are selling these phones to people who carry around 3 or 4 devices and want to consolidate those devices into one mega-device™ (I am going to trademark "mega-device" and become a billionaire, brb).

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:00 PM

I like the idea of carrying around something that can take care of all my media needs. if the price is to steep dont buy it. And this is just the beggining SPARTAN. Embrace the future. But i agree i already have cingular it works great in chicago but when i leave the city it becomes sh*ttier.

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:05 PM

Preach on brother namliler. "if u cant afford it it sux for u"

Posted by Damocles74 - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:17 PM

namliler, you make some good points but if you wait 3 or 4 years something ELSE will rise up and replace this thing costing $700 and so on and so forth. we seem to outmode things really quickly (and for somethings not quickly enough. I'm looking at you N-Gage) this seems like its for not just rich people but rich people who know their Crap. It's not really bad but i just dont see this as "Regular Joe" attainable.

Posted by MisterKalas - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:22 PM

That is really amazing, but can that top off the iPod?

Posted by annoying_tool - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:33 PM

Sounds like an awesome new thing for me to by, but, yea like a couple of you guys said, $500 bucks for phone, I don't think so. But it I think I might be changing plans just incase I have some cash thats burning a hole in my pocket. Is it just a media phone or is it a smart phone too?

Posted by TXVinylJunkie - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:33 PM

the iphone seems cool, but will it muffle out the fart sounds when i'm takin an idump? friggin' sweet though.

Posted by EddieBlaze - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:36 PM

Well, if you enjoy being able to talk to people regardless of where you are. No phone for you.

Cingular sucks.

$600 for a phone is steep, but my younger sister just bought some designer Sidekick phone from t-mobile for $300 bucks and it is not half as nice as the iPhone.

The iPhone is the most feature rich phone available and if you want the best you have to pay for it. You know what else cost a lot of money, Aston Martins. People will argue that you can drive around in a Ford Focus and that a Ford Focus and Aston Martin basically perform the same function, but guess one cost much more than the other. One is better crafted, has more features, looks sexier, and is a status symbol. In case you didn't get it the iPhone is the Aston Martin, and the Ford Focus is that free Nokia phone you get when you sign a one year agreement.

Razrs are cheap these days. And they are not all that kewl wpicially when u compare them to the iphones. Seriously everyone i know has a razr

Razr's are allright I dont own one. I own a pantech which is allright but it was only like 40 bucks. But i am definatly looking forward to this it has almost everything u need in one place.

Posted by spitfirec4 - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 3:16 PM

My freind had a razar and after a while he opened it too hard and the top broke off and the phone split in two. I dont like the razars that much

Posted by SillyGoose900 - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 3:43 PM

i guess i'm one of the people who have a cheap phone...but whatever for that price you could get a ps3( which i already have. I don't really need that good of a phone anyway all i need to do is call and text...and thats about all i have

Posted by k_killa - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 3:53 PM

oh lord...what has ipod come to?

Posted by T_Mape - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 4:11 PM

i like the new iphone but i dont want an iphone when will a stand alone touch sensitive widescreen ipod

Posted by Accolade83 - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 4:15 PM

I can almost guarantee that Cingular will be offering the phone for a lower price with a service agreement. Thats how the phone companies work. The new Samsung Blackjack costs 449.99 without a service agreement. Hell they will charge you almost 300 bucks for a razr if you buy it for retail price without a service agreement. And even if they don't come cheaper than $500 its still way worth it...

Posted by CreamPieBaby - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 4:48 PM

paying more than 50 dollars for a phone is stupid. The price is going to go down, but you know there's gonna be those lames that will buy it at full price just so they can show it off. And people will be impressed with it, but you'll only be cool for that one moment.

Posted by some_peruvian - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 6:16 PM

The Iphone is "great" but cingular COMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Posted by badexec - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 6:34 PM

Considering the treo 600 was $500 new, the blackjack is around $500 new, i'm not surprised by the price. Oh, and I can afford it...so I don't care. Where I live and work, Cingular is just as good (or bad) as Sprint and Verizon. The only thing it's missing for me is 3G.

Posted by altfive - Tuesday, January 9, 2007 8:54 PM

For you guys who are complaining on the price, go research it and stop talking out of your asses. It has more features than just the MP3 player and isn't much more than a Blackberry in price. Think of it as a device that can do anything a computer can the EXACT same way, because well, that's what it is, not just a phone.

Posted by hetman - Wednesday, January 10, 2007 6:27 AM

Yea stop complaining about the price. It is a new high tech device. It shouldnt be on the 99 cent menu. Seriously i would rather own an iphone than a PS3 right now. Atleast it has fun games like chess, and tetris you can dload.

Posted by chhimp - Wednesday, January 10, 2007 7:45 AM

I'm getting two, for my wife and me. I don't have an ipod yet or those lossy internet phone so it would be a great convenant product. I have t-mobile, hope the sim chip slot on the top of the iphone is compatible or I would have to switch provider. All these apple haters out here. Bring something innovative and you have critcism. User friendly, right on....... Hope they have a 4 yr contract and have the phone be free. one day.
Great for the gym

Posted by halofanfreak - Wednesday, January 10, 2007 12:42 PM

him... so this is telling me that apple has just declared every thing it has made obsolete

And really if you no you can't afford it quit bitchin' and get a cheaper phone!

Posted by CreamPieBaby - Wednesday, January 10, 2007 1:39 PM

I don't think it's that people can't afford the phone, I think it's that paying that much for a phone is like buying a fancy sports car to make up for your shortcomings in other areas. you don't really need it, but it'll help your ego. plus it makes more sense to wait to buy a new phone, because the price always goes down almost right away. But only patient people benefit from that.

Posted by NHL21 - Wednesday, January 10, 2007 2:51 PM

The iPhone made it on to the front page of my newspaper.

Hell yeah

Posted by PhillyBlk - Wednesday, January 10, 2007 9:51 PM

Namliler said it best! The better convienance of not carrying a lot of different gadgets works the best. Cd's/cd players, mp3 player, cell, PDA, etc. Just lost my Razr and was going to order a new one but hell no! Getting one (free) from a friend who is upgrading, turning it on and I'll use that until June. As far as price new tech costs. Soooo... not to be taxing myself, getting an envelope and putting $50-$100 in it for the next 5 or so months. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupids!)
