Brown has been bleeding into the red because of the rising cost of the black.
In other words, UPS (whose corporate slogan is "What can BROWN do for you") has been hit heavily by the rising cost of fuel. And spending extra money delivering its estimated 14.5 million parcels a day is something that Brown can’t do for you.
To save money, UPS will be using package flow technology (as silly as that sounds) to cut down on package delivery time and plan routes that allow for more right turns (FYI: Not every state in the Union allows for right turns on red lights, but many do and boy is it a time saver! Sucks to be you, South Dakota!). These changes are expected to save the company $600 million a year and countless man hours.
