The numbers from a survey about next generation video formats conducted by Cymfony (an independent market analytics firm) have just been released and HD DVD is kicking Blu-ray’s ass in opinion polls.
The favorable regard for the format is 46% than that of Blu-ray among both next-gen video enthusiasts and gamers.
The opinion of button mashers carries significantly more weight now than it ever has, because the new format war is not confined to the home theater anymore, it’s being waged across consoles as well. Microsoft and its external HD DVD add on player have taken arms against Sony and the Playstation 3’s built in Blu-ray player and the future of either format may rest heavily on how gamers react.
So far, the response to Blu-ray hasn’t been as positive as Sony might have hoped. What was intended by the electronics maker to be an added bonus and a selling point for the PS3 has actually hurt the company.
As far as the gaming community goes, it seems that the ability to choose has taken priority over having a built in next-gen dvd player and the bundling of a Blu-Ray player with the PS3 has many hardcore gamers "actually dissenting from the format."
There’s also the unwelcome cost the Blu-ray player added to Sony’s rather expensive console. That, and damaging reports from independent comparisons which have shown that the smaller capacity 30 GB HD DVD discs (Blu-ray discs come in sizes of either 25GB or 50GB) have outperformed the competing format when it comes to video quality when playing the same title.
The format war may not be over yet, but if HD DVD keeps winning decisive victories like it has been, it may well draw to a close sooner than anyone expects.
