You probably know Brent Simon from YouTube, or perhaps you know him from the Famous on the Internets interview we did with him awhile back. Either way, you know he's the nerdman behind the Space Camp Song.
Last night, he made his debut to the non-internet world on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Today, he was kind enough to stop by the office and hang out. We played some Wii and ate some hotdogs.
Here is his exclusive report!
BTW, Brent is awesome and has a highly anticipated debut album on sale right freakin' now. You should totally check out his web site NerdPunk.com.
The crew here at G4 asked me to post a blog about my trip, so here goes.
The Jimmy Kimmel Live experience was most excellent. The G4 camera crew met up with me as I walked in to the Kimmel studio. They followed me around for a while inside, getting plenty of footage. I’m sure it’ll be showing up here soon.
I was assigned a dressing room, right next to Geraldo Rivera, only to have Peter Frampton steal it from me not long after. It’s cool though. Later on I got Billy Crystal’s dressing room. I even wiped my hands on his dirty towels! Mmmm…crusty.
I was able to get a couple practice runs in and everything was groovy. I also got to watch Peter Frampton jam with Cleo and the Cletones. That was pretty amazing. I never really followed his work (until now) but that guy can thrash a guitar something fierce.
Eventually, it was go time. As I walked to the stage through the back halls, in my flight suit, I had a very Apollo 13 moment. It almost felt like I was walking in slow motion. Maybe it was just all the Red Bull I had before going on. I stepped into position only to discover that the keyboard had no sound coming out of it. Amid a few frantic moments of the stage director saying “I don’t think it’s gonna’ happen fellas” we managed to correct the problem right before the curtains opened. I felt surprisingly calm as I played Space Camp to an audience that didn’t know if I was for real or not. I think I swayed them when I dropped a “Happy Birthday Jimmy” during the middle of the song.
I was only able to talk to Jimmy for a few seconds before we ran out of time and the show was over. It was still very cool to sit right there in the big chair, in front of a live studio audience. I had an awesome time at Jimmy Kimmel Live and I’m grateful to everyone there who made it happen.
Today, I’m here at G4 hanging out with quite an assortment of fellow nerds. I spent about an hour playing Nintendo Wii with some of the folks. Yea, I dominated at Wii sports. Boxing was especially cool. I got to beat up a girl and not even worry about a lawsuit, ROCK! This whole trip has been such an incredible experience. I wish I could spend more time in LA, but I have to fly back tomorrow.
Back to the real world I guess.
