Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted is being forced to sit out the tour by his new band Rock Star Supernova due to surgery. The rocker-turned-TV-judge has to go under the knife to repair a torn anterior labrum in his left shoulder and a rotator cuff and bicep tear in the right as per doctor’s orders.
Newsted suffered the injuries while trying to catch a 90-pound bass head that had fallen from atop his amp. Yikes! The surgery will be followed by a lengthy rehab assignment that could leave him sidelined for up to nine months.
"I'm freaking out," says Newsted, "My heart was set on finally getting on the road with these guys, but my main focus now is to build myself back to 100%. The stage is set for the band, I wish them the best of luck."
The tour is to kick off on November 21 and features famed musicians Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe drums and guitarist Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns N' Roses) alongside singer Lukas Rossi, who won the position in the band on the TV show of the same name.
Hey, who has a friggin’ 90-pound bass anyways! Now, that’s heavy metal!
