Croc Hunter Killed By Stingray's Barb

Posted September 5, 2006 - By Mike D'Alonzo

Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter to most folks, and the guy who popularized the word "crikey" worldwide, died yesterday from a stingray attack that pierced his heart. He was 44 years old.

If you don't know, Irwin was a national treasure in Australia and New Zealand. So much so, that when news of his death came out yesterday, one of the first responses came from the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard, who called Irwin "a wonderful character".

It's probably pretty cool to die doing something you love. I mean, from all reports, the death was sudden, and there probably wasn't a great deal of pain involved. For an adventurer, I can only imagine that the hardest thing to face would be getting old and no longer being able to do much adventuring.

Thank God, then, that Steve Irwin died doing what he loved.
