U.S. Relinquishes Rights To Internet

Posted July 27, 2006 - By Stephen Johnson

This is one of the most important stories in the history of the internet: Last night, the United States Government ceded control of the internet.

The Man promised to hand administrative responsibilities for ICANN, the net's administrative body, from the U.S. Government to a more international group.

It was also determined that, in the future, ICANN will work toward a more public decision making process, possibly allowing reporters to cover meeting and publishing minutes so that people who use the internet will be able to at least understand the process by which important infrastructure decisions are made.

I am the most important man on the internet, so I will certainly be the head of the group that determines its future.

The Register: United States cedes control of the internet - but what now?
