Sony May Require Trophies
Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, July 18, 2008 1:23 PM
A "major developer" recently told gaming blog Joystiq that Sony will be mandating unique trophies for all games developed for the PS3 in 2009. What's more interesting, however, is that the developer, currently working on an early 2009 release, is also hearing that Sony may be enforcing some measure of uniqueness between spoils earned on its console versus the Xbox 360.
So basically, Sony may require developers working on cross-platform games to make trophies that are unique and totally different from the Xbox 360 achievments. Looks like Sony figured out that people love those achievments, so much so that we'll buy the Xbox 360 version of a game over the PS3 version just for that reason. Will these unique trophies level the playing field? Make you go for the PS3 version over the Xbox 360 version? Think that Sony is trying to play catch-up? Fanboy fight in 3...2...1...

iPhone Shortage To Last A Few Weeks
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, July 18, 2008 1:20 PM

While we've been hanging out enjoying E3 this past week, the rest of the world hasn't forgotten the iPhone 3G, so much so that the phone is in short supply, and will continue to be that way for the next several weeks, according to analysts. The phone will likely be unavailable through conventional means for the better part of the next 4 to 6 weeks, so they say.
So, early adopters, you should feel pretty good about yourselves, because the rest of us schlubs who didn't get the chance to pick up the new iPhone on the day of its release are going to have to wait until the Fall to get our slimy paws on it.

Amazon May Bring Textbooks To Kindle
Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, July 18, 2008 12:26 PM
It recently broke on the internet that Amazon is about to release two new models of their digital book reader, the Kindle; one smaller, more compact version, and another version with a much larger screen.
When the news broke on Crunchgear, a couple commenters pointed out that the larger version would be perfect to take on the college/university textbook market, which brings in $5.5 billion a year. This would appear to be a no-brainer, considering one of the biggest text book publishing companies, McGraw-Hill Education, publishes 95% of their titles digitally as well as in print.
This could not only save the arm muscles of many achademics, but it could save countless trees, cut production costs, save students money, and make the yearly text-shopping clusterf**k almost managable. For now, there has been no official announcement from Amazon regarding and textbook releases, but with that kind of industry in the wings, we think it's only a matter of time.

T-800 Recast In New 'Terminator'
Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, July 18, 2008 11:34 AM

Because Arnold Schwarzenegger is busy running our home state of California, the role of the T-800 Terminator in the new film Terminator: Salvation will be played by another Austrian body-builder who actually trained under the Govenator. Roland Kickinger is also a former Mr. Universe (another trait he shares with Ah-nold), and even played the man himself in the A&E made-for-tv bio-pic See Arnold Run that aired back in 2005.
“There’s a very strong scene in the film where John Connor for the first time meets the Terminator, and he doesn’t know if he’s a good guy or a bad guy,” said Kickinger about his role in the new Terminator film. “It’s Arnold’s character in the first Terminator. That’s basically my role, but 20 years before, so it establishes how the Terminator [came] about.” Plus, Kickinger is almost more of a badass name than Schwarzenegger. Way to go.

Hands-On: 'Rock Revolution'
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, July 18, 2008 11:33 AM

If Rock Revolution had come out before Rock Band, we would have been very impressed… but it didn’t, and it’s impossible to talk about this title without comparing it to bigger music games. In short, I don’t think Rock Band or Guitar Hero World Tour will be crushed by Konami’s entry into the music-game field, but it may prove a nice alternative to the Guitar Hero and Rock Band juggernauts.

Wireless Wii Keyboard By Logitech
Posted by John Manalang - Friday, July 18, 2008 11:33 AM

During this week's E3, Logitech introduced a new wireless keyboard for the Nintendo Wii. In light of Nintendo's new voice-peripheral device, the WiiSpeak, the keyboard contributes to the system's user communications by allowing an easier way of chatting, browsing and perhaps even searching for games via the WiiWare.
“Our new keyboard helps families experience the Internet in the living room – and it will make chatting with online friends simple in popular games, such as Animal Crossing," said by Logitech's Director of Marketing Ruben Mookerjee. The keyboard also supports zoom in/out, forward/back and Quit/OK functions to enhance the Wii browser experience. The mini-receiver plugs into your console and connects via a 2.4ghz wireless signal. The device will be available in August for $49.99.

'The Dark Knight' Killing Already
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, July 18, 2008 11:24 AM

The Dark Knight opens this weekend, to much fanfare, and it's already claimed the opening night crown with a staggering $18.4 million from midnight shows across the country. That breaks the record set by Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith's $16 million a few years back.
Experts are tracking the film for a big, big weekend, and there's a whisper in the air that Warner Bros. is hoping to draw a record-setting $170 million over the weekend, which would clobber Spider-Man 3's record of $151 million for a 3-day weekend. This movie is already a juggernaut, and it's only getting more powerful with each passing moment.

According to Buttonmasher, the head of EA sports will be featured as an unlockable character in the company's upcoming face-masher title. So if all you Microsoft loyals are still bitter about him leaving the company a year ago, go ahead and crack your fingers. But at least give him an ice pack after, he seems like a nice guy.
Facebreaker is due out this September 5 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. For now, hit the jump for Olivia Munn's exclusive hands on demo of the game during E3 2008.

Videogame Sales Soar in June
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, July 18, 2008 10:03 AM
The macro-economy might be heading down the crapper, but the micro-economy of the videogame industry is doing just fine, thank you. According to industry analysts the NPD Group, videogame sales were 53 percent in June, mainly on the hardware strength of Nintendo's console and handheld and massive sales of PS3 exclusive action game Metal Gear Solid 4.
"The video games industry continues to perform in the face of an ever-increasingly difficult economic environment as many turn to more in-home entertainment," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier to Business Week.
Hardware sales grew 54 percent to $615.1 million from $399.2 million a year ago. Software sales jumped 61 percent to $872.6 million from $542.2 million.
