Letterman, Ferguson, Writers Back To Work

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 1:26 PM

David Letterman and Craig Ferguson will join Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien when they return to work on Wednesday, with one crucial difference...they will have writers with them when they do. Yes, Letterman's Worldwide Pants, which also owns The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, has sought and received a waiver from the WGA which will allow the writers to return to work when the shows go back into production.

This will be a serious test of whether or not the WGA can remain unified, as writers begin to trickle back to work, a little at a time. The fewer writers on strike, the weaker a strike could be, especially in the long haul, as others will look to these shows and wonder why their peers are making money while they're still walking the picket lines.

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Monday, December 31, 2007 1:12 PM

Well, here we are, less than 20 days away from the opening of the first blockbuster movie of 2008, J.J. Abrams' monster-movie Cloverfield! The marketing on this film has been very strange, even for "viral" marketing fan, Abrams. Just a couple of trailers have appeared thus far, but honestly, it's been plenty to keep us tantalized for the January 18th opening day. Now here's this beauty that got dropped on us just in time to celebrate the new year!

Personally, I'm amazed the secret of what the monster is still hasn't leaked out. This Abrams guy is pretty brilliant.

MS Admits To Home Server Bug

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 12:47 PM

Microsoft rarely admits mistakes, so when they do, odds are pretty good it's a good-sized one. Hence, when they admitted that there is a bug in their Windows Home Server software, corrupting data storage that it touches, what they were really saying is that there's a huge bug in their Windows Home Server software.

See, Home Server is a software platform that other companies such as Iomega and HP use to help regulate storage devices. Now, while Home Server is under an 'extreme load,' it's having a tendency to corrupt files in those storage devices. Uh-oh, piscettio's, indeed.'

Apple & Fox Team Up For Movie Rental

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Monday, December 31, 2007 12:43 PM

It appears that Apple has something big in store for CES next week and that something big is movie rentals. Rumors are spilling out everywhere that Apple is planning to announce a movie rental plan in conjunction with Fox. If this turns out to be the case, then it would seem that iTunes will be taking on Amazon Unbox head-to-head.

It's also been said that Fox is only the first of several studios talking with Apple right now about rental through iTunes, with Fox being the only one who have hammered out the details.

Of course, this could be disastrous for Unbox, but what kind of effect would this have on business like Netflix and Blockbuster Online, especially when taking the Apple TV into account. What do you fine ladies and gentlmen have to say?

'Treasure' Tops Weak Week At B.O.

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 12:15 PM

The holidays aren't shaping up as anticipated for the nation's most popular films. National Treasure: Book of Secrets won the weekend, bringing in a sort of blah $35 million, but other films are really flailing. As a matter of fact, of all of the movies that have come out in the last few weeks, the only hit is Alvin and the Chipmunks, which should crest $160 million in the next day or so.

On the other hand, films like Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Sweeney Todd aren't doing at all well, with Walk Hard being a particularly bad flop (having earned only $12 million of an estimated $35 million budget.) On the other hand, indie pop hit Juno made $10 million over the weekend, doing very well for such a small budget film.

Fake PSP Shocks People

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Monday, December 31, 2007 12:05 PM

For those of you who actually purchased a PSP in the last year or so, you've probably felt a slight sting thinking about how much you paid for the thing and how little you play it. Well, that nothing compared to the sting some are feeling when they reach for the "Shock-Your-Friend PSP Console".

At first glance, this little doozy look like just another PSP knock-off. But, oh, it is so much more than that. Well not really so much more. It doesn't play games. It doesn't really play anything... aside from cruel practical jokes. You see, this thing is really an electric buzzer.

Jade Empire 2 In Development

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Monday, December 31, 2007 11:59 AM

Fresh off the heels of their smash hit Mass Effect, the good folk over at BioWAre appear to already be hard at work on their project, a next-gen follow-up to their 2005 Xbox success, Jade Empire.

We have to admit, this sounds pretty exciting. We loved the original and the thought of combining that game with next-gen gameplay and the conversation system developed for Mass Effect would be stellar.

One more thought: 2005's Jade Empire was an Xbox exclusive, but now that BioWare has been acquired by EA, do you think this game will be 360 exclusive or will it find its way to a PS3 near you? Let us know that you think.

Pats Complete 16-0 Season

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 11:40 AM

Every year, the 1972 Miami Dolphins gather and toast the last undefeated team's first loss, and, every year, they've had reason to celebrate right around the turn of December. This year, they can leave their champagne on ice, because the New England Patriots have done something that no other team has ever done...complete a perfect 16-0 regular season.

Of course, none of this means anything unless the Patriots complete the season sweep and win the Super Bowl (they will...) which would usher them in as perhaps the greatest team of all time (it will...) which, when added to the Red Sox and Celtics, might just make Boston insufferable as a sports city (it has...)

Wii Been Hacked! Runs Cutest Linux Ever!

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Monday, December 31, 2007 11:30 AM

We all knew it was just a matter of time, but now we have video evidence. The Wii has been totally haxored! That's right, just check out the video below and take a look at what these guys have accomplished. In all honestly, about half of what they say is Greek to me, but I'm impressed with the final result nonetheless.

I did catch that they managed to load Linux onto it. All I can say is, "of course they did."

'Bubble Bobble,' More On Wii VC

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 10:36 AM

Another week, another update to the Nintendo Virtual Console list. This week sees some old friends, namely Bob and Bub, the two bubble dragons from 1986, making a reappearance in Bubble Bobble, an oldie that's been gone a while, but is back with a vengeance in today's update.

Also appearing today are Light Crusader and Top Hunter, meaning that Nintendo has, once again, provided us with a heaping helping of a reminder that gaming has been awesome for a long, long time. Do yourself a favor and spend your Wii Points. Check them out.

CES Celebs Reported For 2008

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 9:50 AM

CES is known for having strange celebrity appearances over the years, and 2008 looks to be no exception to that. In fact, grouped together, the list of celebs that are reported to be making appearances at the conference this year is downright bizarre. How about Kevin Costner, Danica Patrick, and Mary J. Blige? Or members of the Black Eyed Peas and late 20th Century novelty act Train?

Yes, they really blew their wad on getting the best of the best this year didn't they? That is, if this were 2001. Otherwise, it's kinda meh. Oh, except Kevin Costner will reportedly be playing with his band. And if you didn't think you read that correctly, you're wrong. With. His. Band.

We can't wait to see that.

Philips' 52-Inch Touchscreen At CES

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 9:36 AM

With CES only a couple of days away, some of the big boys are already starting to let us peek behind the veil to see what they're planning. Here's a good example. Philips will unveil a 52-inch touchscreen LED display, the largest of it's kind in the world, by a good five inches.

But wait, that's not all! At the same show, they will highlight a double-sided 47-inch display that has one light sandwiched between two screens, so that you can watch from both sides. Keep in mind, too, that all of this is with high-definition resolution, so you can watch Steel Magnolias in HD from someone else's lawn.
