EA Makes Games For Dummies
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, August 07, 2008 4:41 PM

We have a rule that we never read any books that call us stupid in their titles, but apparently, many people don't share our high-self-esteem. The ...For Dummies series of books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies since they launched. Now, EA is making a series of videogames based on the books. Um, yay?
Through an easy to navigate interface, the For Dummies titles teach players the skills to master a variety of activities, from Poker and Solitaire to brain training and Sudoku.
The first of these casual PC games (Poker for Dummies) is available now, and the rest are rolling out over the coming months. In November 2008, casual gamers will be able to learn, practice and play on the go when EA launches Travel Games For Dummies for the Nintendo DS. Travel Games For Dummies will feature tutorials and game play for: Solitaire, Sudoku and crossword puzzles, all in one game.

Warners Blames Music Games For Loss
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, August 07, 2008 4:13 PM

Warner Music is doing poorly financially; the company reported that their losses were $9 million in the three months ending in June. No surprise--it's just too easy to get music for free these days--but what is surprising is one of the causes Warner cited. They say music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero just aren't paying them enough.
"There is what I would call a very paltry licensing fee per song," said Edgar Bronfman Jr., the chairman and chief executive who owns a 6.5 percent stake in Warner Music. "I think the industry as a whole needs to take a very different look at this business and participate more fully and in a much more partnership way," he said. "And if that does not become the case, as far as Warner Music is concerned, we will not license to those games."
Woah... a shot across the bow! But if I were a game maker, I'd respond with: "Look, bucko, there wasn't any licensing fees for music games a few years ago, so you should be happy with what you get!"
Okay, I probably wouldn't say "bucko."

Exclusive Interview: Jonathan Blow, 'Braid' Creator
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, August 07, 2008 3:43 PM
Hey, 360 owners, have you downloaded Braid from Xbox Live Arcade yet? You really should; the game just came out yesterday, and not only is it racking up a series of glowing reviews, it's also the perfect antidote to derivative big-budget titles that collapse under their own weight. Seriously, if some part of you is a little sick of playing another dark, dreary, shooter or dungeon crawler, Braid might be the tonic you're looking for.
In place of same-old same-old, this truly original platformer employs unique gameplay mechanics, allusions to classic platformers of the past, clever puzzles and painterly visuals to give you a gaming experience like nothing you've had before. Have we raved enough to convince you?
We contacted the game's creator, Jonathan Blow, and talked shop about Braid, indie games, and the state of the industry. Check out Braid in action...

Sega's Concerns About Sonic
Posted by John Manalang - Thursday, August 07, 2008 3:10 PM

Sega of America VP Sean Ratcliffe is very much aware that Sonic hasn't been looking so slick lately. The hedgehog's last next-gen run with Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't received so well by critics and gamers, as it was plagued with clunky camera angles and controls.
"Some of that criticism is probably warranted," said Ratcliffe in an interview with GameDaily. He added that with the Sonic franchise dating way back during the Genesis days, his team needs to put a "disproportionate amount of effort" in future titles in order to bring back its glory. Ratcliffe mentions Sonic Team's new project, Sonic Unleashed (screenshot above), will allow them to "truly deliver the Sonic experience" to players. But (and this puzzles us) Ratcliffe said that his team is adding an "innovative twist" by slowing (?!) him down to turn into a "Werehog".

'Soulcalibur IV': Two Million Shipped
Posted by John Manalang - Thursday, August 07, 2008 12:55 PM

Two million souls have burned already. No, not because of the rapture, but Namco Bandai announced today that Soulcalibur IV has already shipped two million units worldwide since its July 29 launch.
Namco Bandai's latest installment on their weapon-based 3D fighter series is packed with new fighters, including special appearances from the Star Wars universe: Yoda on the Xbox 360 and Darth Vader on the PS3. Although the two can't clash lightsabers on one platform, online play still kicks ass (void when lagging). Soulcalibur IV was developed by Namco Bandai's internal development group, Project Soul. Check out the video review after the cut.
