Chris Hardwick was on the floor at E3 for us, and he got a look at some of the most interesting (and bizarre) titles from indie developers. First up, Chris took a look at Jo Jo's Fashion Show for the PC. Lead designer Greg Trefry showed off the game's variety of models and outfits in which you can dress them. Next was lead designer Matt Korba talking about The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, and platform PC title about time travel and pie theft - clearly the best of both worlds. And finally, Chris moved on the mysterious Dark Room Sex game, which contrary to popular opinion, is not a Tijuana public restroom simulator. Instead, the game focuses on recreating the sounds of "happy coupling" with a good waggle of your Wii wand. It looks like the Wii has its first harcore title.

Blair Herter was on the floor for the final day of E3, talking with Chris Corry from Electronic Arts about the upcoming RTS title, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Corry described the game's increased importance on naval presence and the new abiiity to build bases on the water. The increased roles of both naval and aerial units will change a great deal about the game's strategy while maintaining the classic Red Alert feel. The game is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this Fall.

Tom Clancy's EndWar is going to be available from Ubisoft for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, and Nintendo DS this October.

'Metal Gear Solid 4' Tops June Game Sales ChartPosted by John Manalang - Thursday, July 17, 2008 5:01 PM
That's a sign of gratitude from him, as fans have made Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots the top selling video game in the month of June, according to NPD reports. Snake's last mission sold over 770,000 copies last month and that doesn't even count the special edition PS3 bundles. Here are the top five selling games in June:
Of course, MGS4's release boosted PS3 sales, but evidently, not enough to catch up with the Nintendo Wii.

Hit the break for some extra gameplay footage. Wii Wins: Top-Selling U.S. ConsolePosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 4:11 PM
Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime predicted it at Nintendo's E3 08 press conference, and today it's come to pass: The Wii is officially the top-selling current-gen console in America, according to industry research group NPD. Nintendo says the Wii in June surpassed the Xbox 360 to take the title. More than 666,000 (SATAN!) Wii consoles sold for the month of June, and nearly 10.9 million Wii consoles have been sold in the United States in the 20 months following its November 2006 launch, making it the top of the top in the US. "Wii was created with the goal of expanding the gaming universe through its intuitive motion-sensing controller," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "As we have demonstrated this week during the E3 Media & Business Summit, Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another." High-Voltage's exclusive Wii FPS title will take advantage of Nintendo's new voice peripheral in the game's multiplayer mode, where up to 16 players can join in. No details yet on The Conduit's several multiplayer modes but it's good to see other developers are already using Nintendo's new device. VideoGaming247: The Conduit to support 16-player multiplayer, uses WiiSpeak PlayStation Home Is Region LockedPosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 3:48 PM
According to reports on the internets, the public areas of PlayStation Home will be region locked, so we won't be able to meet the French girl of our dreams bowling in Home. You will be able to invite foreign friends into your home, but you won't share the same public spaces and games. Sony says this is to ensure that everyone gets an "experience most suited to their tastes." But it probably also has to do with region-specific advertising, marketing and media rights as well. 'Fable 2' Plot Around 12 Hours LongPosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 3:39 PM
According to game-blog Joystiq, the main plot of Fable 2 will only be around 12 hours long--not quite the epic length many people expected. Although, that seems to fit in with the overall vibe of the game, in which self-direction and exploration are prized above a linear story progression. Long or not, all the early reactions to the game that we've heard have been raves. Joystiq.com: Fable 2 main quest will be around 12 hours long Iwata: Foretelling Console Lifespan "Nonsense"Posted by John Manalang - Thursday, July 17, 2008 3:36 PM
Nintendo big boss Satoru Iwata had something to say to say when BBC referred to Sony's ten year console plan: "Nonsense." According to Iwata, innovation in hardware should only start when it ceases with software. He said that Nintendo constantly pursues new software ideas for their current hardware and when his developers have used the hardware to its full potential, only then will Nintendo introduce a new system. Sony did mention that they have already spent so much on the PS3's hardware that it's difficult for the company now to purchase exclusives. Do you think that Iwata-san is right, or are they just continuing to milk money from the many soccer moms and "casual" gamers dying to play Wii Music? EuroGamer: Satoru Iwata says predicting console lifespan is "nonsense"

Freestyle 101 E3 Special: SupernaturalPosted by Frank Meyer - Thursday, July 17, 2008 2:23 PM
If you’ve been watching Freestyle 101 over the last year, you’ve noticed that virtually every MC we ask to name the all-time best freestyler says the same thing: Supernatural. Hailing from Indiana, Supernatural moved to New York and made a name for himself on the scene as a master freestyler via legendary battles with the likes of Juice and Craig G. He can be seen doing his thang in dozens of battle DVDs, including the film Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme. He cut a studio album in 2005 called S.P.I.T. (Spiritual Poetry Ignites Thought) and teamed with Freestyle 101 vet Phoenix Orion in the group Alien Nation for the collaboration album Earth Defenders. Soon after, Supernat’ cut an entire album of off-the-top rhymes with fellow wordsmith P.E.A.C.E. of Freestyle Fellowship called Camp Freestyle. All of this culminated in 2006, when Supernatural set the new Guinness Book of World Records world record for the longest freestyle whilst hosting the Rock The Bells festival in San Bernardino, CA. He freestyled for over nine hours, breaking the original record of 8 hours 45 minutes. His specialty is letting members of the crowd pass up stuff out of their pockets, which he incorporates into his rhymes. It’s an incredible feat to witness, no doubt. What many hip hop fans do not know about Supernatural is that he’s an avid gamer, having served as the MC of Midway's NBA Ballers and lending his track “Internationally Known” to the soundtrack of Tony Hawk's Underground. He’s a huge Grand Theft Auto fan, way into Resident Evil and a big Gun guy. Go figure! So we here at G4 could think of no better man of Earth to join us at E3 to kick a live freestyle in front of the videogaming crowd. As you’ll see, Supernat’ went hard, incorporating the games on display, the objects people passed up to him, and everything and anything in the room. It was beyond impressive and we were honored to have him. 'Bionic Commando' E3 TrailerPosted by Jeffrey Kanjanapangka - Thursday, July 17, 2008 2:19 PM

There will be a sequel for Red Dead Revolver in the offing if the Take-Two Press Conference is any indication, where a short teaser trailer aired. For those of you not in the know, Red Dead Revolver was a Western game that involved a bounty hunter trying to get vengeance for the death of his family as a child. Now, the original came out quite a while ago, and, since then, the Western genre has had titles like Gun and Call of Juarez to keep it afloat, but Red Dead Revolver was one of the originals in the space, and it will be amazing if they can make the game larger and more next-gen. The system will launch with more than 500 achievements for things like world exploration, PVP, PVE, professions and character development. Some will be "epic," others will be "whimsical." Some achievements come with purely cosmetic rewards, too. Here's a ton of information, right from the source. 'KOTOR' MMO Confirmed?Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 12:50 PM
This might be the biggest news to come out of E3 08: Knights of the Old Republic MMO has reportedly been confirmed. Portfolio.com published a short excerpt of an interview with EA boss John Riccitiello where he talked about the MMOs EA has in development: "the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare." Not new info--previously, everyone assumed this meant a KOTOR MMO--but here's the new news: N. Evan Van Zelfden, the writer of the report, said Riccitiello was asked specifically if he was talking about "KOTOR Online," and Riccitiello responded unequivocally, "Yes." So, it's a little he-said-she-said, but moving toward official. 'Double D Dodgeball' GameplayPosted by Jeffrey Kanjanapangka - Thursday, July 17, 2008 12:23 PM

Hands-On: 'Madden 09'Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, July 17, 2008 12:03 PM
I got a chance to put my sweaty mitts all over EA Sports' flagship franchise, Madden NFL 09, and got a taste of what the 20th Anniversary version of the game is going to be like on its release in August. First off, the big man himself is back, as John Madden runs you through a training sequence to see what you're good at. There's rushing offense and defense, and passing offense and defense. This, I'm told, is to show your tendencies, so that the game can adjust and make it harder for you to just go with what you're good at all the time. It's a good idea. The animation is spectacular in Madden 09. Seriously, it's one of those things that catches your eye from all the way across the floor at E3, which is filled with games that have great animation, so you know it's special. It's not all that different, but it's somehow...rounder, if that makes sense. The grass is prettier, snowfall is ridiculously accurate, the stadiums look better, and the players are just about perfect. Madden fans will be delighted, since this will help them feel more a part of the game than ever.

Hands-On: 'Rock Band 2'Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:59 AM
We have a hands-on of the new Harmonix/MTV rock rhythm game Rock Band 2, but, since this game is so big, we're going to look at it from two points-of-view, mine, and Feed Meister Steve Johnson, because we both got to play the game, separately and together. Steve: It's just like Rock Band 1, but that's the best thing I can say about it. When you're making a sequel to one of the best games ever made, you don't want it to be very different, you just want the very small problems with the first game to be corrected. And they have been...all of them. The menus are easier to work, the store is more intuitive, the no-fail mode is great for spazzes and feebs, the instruments have been tuned up and tightened, and I wouldn't have thought it was possible, but the song selection is better than the first game. 'Rock Band 2' Makes Dreams Come TruePosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:46 AM
As long-time readers of G4tv.com know, I’ve been calling for the inclusion of Elvis Costello in a music game since the launch announcement of Guitar Hero 2… or even earlier, so this week, when the official announcement was made that Elvis Costello’s "Pump It Up" would be included in Rock Band 2, I naturally assumed that Harmonix and MTV Games had listened to me, and included the real king of Rock and Roll in the game, because they were afraid of my mighty wrath. So I went to MTV's suite to investigate. “Yes,” I was told by an MTV Games P.R. rep, “We included that track specifically because you asked for it.” Was she being sarcastic? Who cares. She said it. Then, knowing that you might not believe me, and keeping in mind the internet motto of “Picture or it didn’t happen,” please enjoy the photographic proof of my massive influence on the videogame industry:
Hands-On: 'Major Minor's Majestic March'Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:12 AM
You might call me crazy, but I'm ready to call Major Minor's Majestic March the sleeper hit of E3 08. It's not hardcore or anything, but, at least for the 10 minutes I played it, it's very, very fun. This unassuming Wii title from Majesco (of all people) was made by rhythm game pioneers Masaya Matsuura and Rodney Greenblatt, the team behind Parappa The Rapper, and the game definitely looks like it. It updates the colorful, 2-D cartoonish feel of PaRappa and Um Jammy Lammer and adds a unique, simple use of the Wiimote. Rock Band Party: THE WHO!!!Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:12 AM
I am the luckiest person I know. I have to level with you. Sometimes, this job isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's long hours, lots of work, creative problem solving, whatnot. However, sometimes you get to realize that you do something truly great for a living, and that you wouldn't trade it for the world. Last night was one of those experiences. Harmonix and MTV threw a party called 'The Rock Band Bash', and they got one of the greatest bands of all time to be the entertainment. THE F*N WHO!!! At 7:00PM, we were led into the Orpheum here in Los Angeles, and there was a Rock Band 2 stage set up, where people could form bands and play in front of hundreds of people, using the new guitars and amped-up drums, as well as the new setlist. There were open bars everywhere, and something was being set up in the main theater, but they wouldn't let us in... 'L.A. Times' Looks Into Halo-GatePosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 10:30 AM
Remember how Bungie was going to announce something at E3 this year and then they offered an apology instead:
According to the L.A. Times, the Halo announcement was cut from Microsoft E3 press conference because it would have made the event go on too long (?). "We had an embarrassment of riches," Don Mattrick said. "We felt we could do this game more justice with a more dedicated event." We guess that that long demo of You're in the Movies was pretty important. We'll let you know more about Bungie's game when we know it, of course. LATimes: Microsoft explains Halo's no-show at E3 game conference Ubisoft: 'Timing of E3 Not Appropriate'Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 10:11 AM
According to Ubisoft's executive director Alain Corre, the timing of E3 is not "appropriate." "For E3, it's very important to be there, and to present the games, because even though it's much, much smaller than it used to be, still the American media are here, all our competitors, so you need be there, to be ready and to share product," Corre told Gamesindustry.biz. ""[But] E3 here, mid-July, in the Convention Center in downtown LA - it's not appropriate I would say." The reason for the inappropriate-ness: Game companies live and die by Christmas sales, and they're already well into their holiday planning by July, so there are less announcements at this time. "What we would like, and we're discussing that, is to have an E3 back in May with a bigger size," he explained. "It shouldn't be at the same level [as 2006] because it was getting too big." GamesIndustry.biz: Ubisoft: E3 is "not appropriate" at the current date, location Wii-Motes To Have Built In MotionPlus?Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 9:05 AM
One of the big announcements from Nintendo at this year's E3 was the roll-out of WiiMotion Plus, a Wiimote add-on that makes your stick read motion one-to-one, which leads to the kind of accuracy we'd need for, say, a decent light-sabre game. But Nintendo has yet to decide if the new tech from the device will be built-in to future Wiimotes. "As to looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built in - we're always looking at how hardware should evolve and where we should take it," Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi. "Unfortunately I don't have a definite direction to give you today, but it's something we'll be looking at." 'Animal Crossing: City Folk' DetailsPosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 8:45 AM
At their developers roundtable last night, Nintendo dropped some details on what we can expect from upcoming Wii open-world game Animal Crossing City Folk. Here's what we know, directly from the mouth of the game's creator, Katsuya Eguchi: * Seasons and Seasonal Events will remain, including Halloween, Jingle the Reindeer at Christmas time, and a "special visitor" in spring who brings eggs. Spoiler Alert: We think it's the Easter Bunny. * New contend (wallpaper, furniture, items etc.) will be available through WiiConnect 24. * A theater where you "can watch comedy shows." 'Rock Band 2' InstrumentsPosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 8:28 AM
We spent a little time at MTV Games suite, and brought back some photos of some Rock Band and Rock Band 2 instruments. These are second party, Mad Catz deals, but they are very impressive. Above is a Rock Band drum cover, we guess for the kick drum of the ION, deluxe drum kit pictured below:
Miyamoto: 'Wii Music' Better Than A GamePosted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 17, 2008 7:59 AM
At Nintendo's developers roundtable at E3 08, Nintendo guru and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto showed off some of the details of Wii Music, the company's music creator/simulator, and agreed that the title is not a videogame, but is more interesting than a videogame. A journalist asked, basically, "Wii Music doesn't have high scores, goals or anything like that, isn't it more like a toy than a videogame?" Miyamoto responded: "Yes, that's right. That's why it's more interesting than a videogame." |
