Brad Pitt To Star In Tarantino's New Film?

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, July 09, 2008 4:50 PM

Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill 1 & 2 director Quentin Tarantino is on the hunt for his new World War II based flick, Inglorious Bastard. So far, he persuaded Pulp Fiction producer Lawrencer Bender and Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings producer Harvey Weinstein to support his film.

But apparently he wants more star power, so he's asking Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt to be part of it. It should be an interesting character twist for Pitt, as a Tarantino directed film could phase him away from his more recent, serious character roles such as in Babel, and back to a cool, arrogant approach like Tyler Durden in Fight Club (or a mix of both perhaps like in Se7eN).

It looks like Tarantino can be an effective talker, as his previous film, Grindhouse/Death Proof, which was co-produced by Weinstein didn't do so well in the box office.  Inglorious Bastard was originally planned for a 2001 release from Miramax, but the currently, the script has gone out to Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount and Sony. According to Tarantino, this film is an homage to 1967's The Dirty Dozen which sounds very promising.

BioWare: Against Piracy With Customer Loyalty

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, July 09, 2008 3:39 PM

Mass Effect, Knights of The Old Republic, and Jade Empire are gifts conjured from the heavens by BioWare. That is why our loyalty stands with BioWare against pirating their stellar AAA quality titles.

"That's ultimately the best, most successful path to prevent piracy," said by BioWare's co-CEO Ray Muzyka. "To have players that want your games, want to believe in them and think they're high-quality and realize they're going to get a lot of value out of them as platforms for long time afterwards."

We all love saving money, but if it's quality you're buying, then it's money well damn spent.

Thompson Judge Recommends Lifetime Ban

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, July 09, 2008 3:36 PM

Famous videogame hating attorney Jack Thompson may be barred from practicing law in Florida for his entire life! Judge Dava Tunis has recommended that Thompson be disbarred for life, and pay over $43,000 in "disciplinary costs." Damn! That's harsh!

Tunis recommended the disbarment based on  "abuse of the legal process, violations of other duties owed as a professional, and prior discipline orders." Here's some choice verbiage from the filing, indicating why the life-time ban hammer was recommended:

"No indication exists from the totality of the record and Mr. Thompson’s continuing behavior that he will be rehabilitated, follow court orders, and comport himself appropriately and professionally toward judges, attorneys and litigants whose position is in opposition to his."

 And:

"Over a very extended period of time involving a number of totally unrelated cases and individuals, the Respondent has demonstrated a pattern of conduct to strike out harshly, extensively, repeatedly and willfully to simply try to bring as much difficulty, distraction and anguish to those he considers in opposition to his causes. He does not proceed within the guidelines of appropriate professional behavior, but rather uses other means available to intimidate, harass, or bring public disrepute to those whom he perceives oppose him. Thus, after careful consideration of the underlying facts in the instant cases, together with the Florida Standards for Imposing Lawyer Sanctions, the applicable aggravating and mitigating factors and the precedent case law, this Court makes the following recommendations for John Bruce Thompson: A. Permanent disbarment, with no leave to reapply for admission. B. Disciplinary costs currently totaling $43,675.35.

Hackers Could Conquer the World Wide Web

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, July 09, 2008 3:35 PM

A flaw in the internet's foundation could let hackers take over the World Wide Web. Hackers could eventually take advantage of a vulnerability found in your Domain Name System (your computer's internet branch) that would allow them to control your web traffic, no matter what you input into your browser.

Security researcher Dan Kaminsky of IOActiv came across his vulnerability about six months ago and immediately urged industry heads Microsoft, Cisco and Sun to team up for a solution. "You'd have the Internet, but it wouldn't be the Internet you expect. (Hackers) would control everything," said by Securosis analyst Rich Mogul (what a name).

On Tuesday, a "patch" was released by software and hardware makers, which was secretly in development, to possibly fix the problem. Also, the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) issued a warning of a series of DNS "cache-poisoning attacks" the flaw could allow. "An attacker with the ability to conduct a successful cache poisoning attack can cause a nameserver's clients to contact the incorrect, and possibly malicious, hosts for particular services," CERT said.

You could check out Kaminsky's webpage, www.doxpara.com, to read more about his findings and find out if your network is affected. Hack the planet? Hopefully not.
