EA Borrows A Billion

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, May 09, 2008 3:32 PM

Electronic Arts has borrowed a billion dollars from banks and financial organizations in anticipation of buying Take Two Interactive.

Chairman Strauss Zelnick most recently told the New York Times that “the critical and consumer response to Grand Theft Auto IV vindicates our strategy of waiting until the launch with regard to E.A.’s offer."

So stay tuned, it looks more and more like this merger will happen. EA better be able to pay me back when the time comes, or I'm going to have to start breaking kneecaps.

MS: Sony Can't Keep Promises

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, May 09, 2008 2:51 PM

Aw, snap! Microsoft representative Aaron Greenberg says that Sony has failed to keep their promises as regards the PlayStation 3, failing to deliver the games that were promised prior to the release of the console, failing to deliver the online content they promised, and not having released the revolutionary PlayStation Home that was promised when people bought their PS3's.

Now, keep in mind that this isn't our opinion, but the words of a Microsoft rep, who is defending the XBox 360. Oh, and he also disputes the new sales figures that show that PS3 is outselling the 360 in Europe. We have only one thing to say to all of these accusations...

Damn!

'Super High Me' Opens Big

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, May 09, 2008 2:42 PM

Doug Benson, regular guest on Attack of the Show and stand-up comedian, recently released a documentary called Super High Me onto the 420 friendly public. Something of a parody to Supersize Me, Doug spent 30 days smoking lots and lots of pot to see what happens when you "over do it".

Since this was a smaller, independent film with little to no advertising budget, the innovators over at B-Side Films decided to approach distribution of the film differently. When the movie opened in smaller, art house theaters all over the country, B-Side also launched the "Roll Your Own Screening" project. If you had a projector, a DVD player, and a few friends you could order a copy of the movie on DVD early and host a screening at your house, apartment, or shady back alley. Thanks to this, Super High Me screened in 1,076 different locations on April 20th, surpassing the 868 theaters that Fahrenheit 911 opened in. Now yes, these weren't all theaters, so technically no records were broken, but coming from a film with zero marketing expense and no media buys at all, this grassroots campaign appears to be a huge success.

Even better, there's still time to host your own screening, and now all you need is a widescreen HDTV. Find out how after the bump.

PS Home Too Ambitious?

Posted by Ty Colfax - Friday, May 09, 2008 2:12 PM

Sony's Final Boss of Computing Entertainment Europe, David Reeves, is saying that the non-gaming apps being set-up for Home have delayed its launch and that it was all too ambitious. They were looking for marquee sponsorship from products like Nike and Adidas, but have changed their minds finding that those companies were interested in fashion first, gaming second.

"It is definitely coming out in autumn," said Reeves. "Whether that's October or November, I don't precisely know, but it is an open beta."

Just say Novober. We already know you're pulling dates out of thin air.

BioWare, EA Remove Copy Protection

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, May 09, 2008 1:58 PM

Last week we let you in on Bioware and EA's plans to place annoying copy protection on PC titles. The plan called for buyers of Mass Effect and Spore to submit to a check of the validity of their disc every ten days or so.

Today, both companies have changed their minds. When Mass Effect comes out on May 27th, it will be verified only when downloading new content, and Spore will require validation only on a patch or game content update. Both games will be playable without their disc in the drive.

Makes sense. Problem solved. Move along.

'GTA IV' DLC To Be In San Andreas?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, May 09, 2008 1:39 PM

We all know that downloadable content exclusive to the 360 is coming maybe this fall for Grand Theft Auto IV... but what will the content consist of?

Maybe, just maybe, it will be set in San Andreas. The DLC is said to consist of entire cities, and if so, San Andreas is a logical choice. There's that, and the below plane ticket a user of the GTA Social Club site found:

Looks like a ticket to San Andreas issued to one Niko Bellic. Hmmm...interesting.

'GTA' MMO?

Posted by Ty Colfax - Friday, May 09, 2008 12:19 PM

Realtime Worlds, a development house that used to be under the Rockstar roof, is now hoping to partner with or sell it's APB (All Points Bulletin) work in order to give the world GTA Online, the rumored MMO that would further expand Rockstar's e-domination.

With the multiplayer going the way its going, we're expecting GTA to house its own MMO with its own technology as it seems so close already. But with a few MMOs in trouble, the fad may be slipping away and Rockstar is not one to hop onto sinking ships.

'Gran Turismo' Ships 50 Million Units

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, May 09, 2008 12:08 PM

Sony Computer Entertainment has reported that the Gran Turismo franchise has shipped over 50 million units worldwide since its inception just over 10 years ago, which is a pretty staggering number. Especially given the idea that Gran Turismo was initially planned as a niche racing game, and now is all over the place.

What about you out there? Are any of you big time Gran Turismo fans? Is it the best racing franchise on the block, or should we be out getting something else? To be honest, I, personally, have not been much of a racing gamer over the years, but I could use the advice.

'Guitar Hero 4' the Holidays

Posted by Ty Colfax - Friday, May 09, 2008 11:49 AM

We could have a Guitar Hero 4 as early as this coming holiday season, which according to Activision's Mike Griffith, will represent a "significant leap forward in innovation." It's presumed that part of that innovation will be the other instruments and vocal component that other Activision employees have mentioned publicly.

Additional music licenses will further expand the number and quality of playable songs and the game should only get better. We're apparently 2 weeks out from specific details about the game's release.

Rumor: 360 Motion-Controller Next Week?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, May 09, 2008 10:12 AM

Here's a huge rumor: Microsoft is releasing their rumored-but-not-confirmed motion controller next week. Here's how kotaku.com is posting it:

"According to sources that will go unnamed, Microsoft may be showing its Xbox 360 motion controller as early as next week to press, a controller geared specifically for Banjo Kazooie 3 gameplay. In fact, we've heard that select members of the press have already seen the controller—in use on the next Banjo Kazooie title—in action."

Furthermore:

Microsoft's event next Tuesday, at which the new Banjo Kazooie is confirmed to be shown to North American press, comes with an embargo that lifts before the event kicks off proper. That means that whatever is on display for press will be revealed next Tuesday morning to everyone.

There you have it. Stay tuned!
