Elite Xbox 360? GamePro says, "Not So Much"

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, April 19, 2007 3:43 PM

The release of the Xbox 360 Elite is right around the corner!

We think the thing is rad (as the kids say), I mean, 120gig harddrive, HDMI port, and it's black...is there anything hipper than that?

It's not all love, though...GamePro a list of gripes about the Elite... in the interest of even time, their main points are re-posted below.

  1. The over abundance of 360 models is confusing to the consumer and unnecessary

Next 'Survivor' To Be Set In China

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 3:23 PM

Reality-show godfather Survivor will shed the uninhabited-island thing in favor of the most inhabited place on earth. The next iteration of CBS's show will take place in mainland China.

Setting the next edition of the reality competition in a nation of 1.3 billion is expected to increase the show's international appeal.

Mao would be very, very displeased.

'Lost' Videogame Coming

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 3:22 PM

You sort of had to see it coming, but now it's official: ABC's mysterious island drama Lost is getting the videogame treatment.

TV execs Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, speaking on their weekly Lost podcast, confirmed that the game is headed to the Xbox 360, and the PC and PlayStation 3.

Everyone is tight-lipped on what the game will be about... but we're thinking you press the A button and your third-grade teacher appears, gives you an apple, then disappears into smoke. Later, you wander aimlessly while being attacked by polar bears, but get this: They're PURPLE.

TWIST!

We're also hoping that Evangeline Lilly shows up in the game. She's hot.

Remake of 'Colossus' On The Way

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 3:06 PM

According to Variety, Brian Grazer is producing a remake of a classic, 70s science fiction flick.

Universal and Imagine Entertainment are behind Colossus: The Forbin Project, and it's a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard.

The Forbin project is about a super-smart computer that becomes self-aware and wreaks sci-fi havoc.

The original Forbin Project is beloved by many in the sci-fi community. Let's hope the overall vibe of 70s Sci-Fi--the use of genre tropes to illuminate the nature of man--shines through, and we don't just get another mindless flick at the multi-plex.

Ledger Talks Joker

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 2:54 PM

Surely you've heard that Heath Ledger will portray The Joker in the next Batman movie.

Everyone knows that.

What are you, deficient? Come on! Get with the times!

But here's something I bet you didn't know: Ledger will not be playing a over-the-top, Nicholson-style Joker.

According to Warner Brothers, Heath Ledger's Joker will be "scary," "raggedy," and "will have grey skin with lots of scarring." Expect a character photo this summer.

Our question: Can you maintain the unique style of The Joker and not have him be sort of overblown and campy? You know, jokey?

360 Backwards Compatibility Expands

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 2:45 PM

One of the many, many great things about next-gen (current-gen, really) videogame systems is the ability to play the games you bought for the last-gen machine.

While the PS3 and Wii are leading the pack on the backward-compatibility issue, the 360 is coming in a close second. Below the cut you will find a full, alphabetical list of 360 backwards titles. Check and see if your old Xbox games are on there. Bet they will be; it's a pretty long list.

Thankfully, Yourself!Fitness, my favorite, oddly punctuated yoga game, is on the list.

Neo Geo Games Come To Wii

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 12:53 PM

The NeoGeo is one of those legendary systems that always seemed to be at someone elses' house, never mine. So I'm happy I'll finally get to check out the games from the formerly cutting-edge system at my leisure, on my Wii.

Yes, the launch of the NeoGeo console over Wii's Shop Channel is imminent, friends.

"We're planning for a limited number of games each month over the course of a year. We don't want it to be sporadic with one game here, and two or three over the next few months," explained Ben Herman, president of SNK Playmore USA, the company behind the NeoGeo.  "We really want to have a flow where there are a couple of games available each month, and we'll keep adding to the library that way.

No date as of yet, but trust us, it's coming.

Sony 'Revisiting' PS3 Pricing Strategy

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 11:22 AM

According to a report in The Financial Times, Sony is considering a price change for the PlayStation 3.

The move is to help boost up sagging sales of the console in the United States and Japan.

Sony President Ryoji Chubachi said, "We are re-examining our [PS3] budgeting process in terms of pricing and volume. Sales assumptions change and the market is competitive. We are in the midst of revisiting our strategy for the PS3."

Revisiting strategy, eh? Sounds to us like a price-cut is looking more and more likely, and, given what we've seen on the thing, and the news of what's coming up, the PS3 may actually become the bargain of the century. Apart from the negative internet hype and message board carping, the new PlayStation is a pretty sweet machine.

Kirk Will Appear In New 'Trek'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 11:04 AM

From Hoth to Tatooine, trekkers have been wondering what take Lost's J.J. Abrams is going to take with the Star Trek movie he's developing.

The early word on the 'nets has been that the film will be set at Starfleet Academy and revolve around the meeting and early days of Kirk, Spock, Bones and the other Ewoks of Star Fleet.

Abrams' released this statement: "James T. Kirk appears in the movie."

That's not much information, we're aware, but it is, as they say, all we got. Abrams went on to make the following statement:

"The respect we all have for Star Trek canon - and for a brand-new audience - is massive. The script is done. We’re now starting pre-prep, and we can’t wait to start shooting! Many more details to follow!"

Sony Replacing DVDs

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, April 19, 2007 10:34 AM

Those rascally movie studios and their DRM! They just won’t quit, will they, not even when their copyright protection turns out to be a big pain in the ass for consumers.

At least one studio, Sony is making up for it by offering replacement DVDs to people whose DVD players are incompatible with the  ARccOS copy protection scheme.

If you’re one such unlucky consumer, buck up, grab a phone and call 1-800-860-2878 to get your replacement DVD.

Warrant Reveals VT Shooter Not Gamer

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 19, 2007 9:06 AM

In spite of early (since removed) reports in The Washington Post and the bloviations of both Dr. Phil and anti-gaming attorney Jack Thompson, it looks like the gunman behind the shootings at Virginia Tech was not a videogame player.

A warrant listing items siezed from Cho Seung Hui's residence reveals little that suggests an interest in gaming. No consoles. No copies of Grand Theft Auto or Katamari Damacy. Just the things that you might expect would be found in a college student's dorm room.

Although a computer and harddrive are listed in the items taken, and could contain games, Cho's roommate has stated that he never saw his roommate playing videogames during his rare appearances in the dorm suite.

So there you have it. The pundits will have to find another facile "explanation" for these horrid crimes.
