The Loop: One On One With Uwe Boll

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, April 10, 2008 7:36 PM

Today's very special guest on Attack of the Show is Director, Uwe Boll. The controversial figure has become famous for making filmic adaptations of videogames that have collectively not been well received by critics and the gaming community, such as House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark and BloodRayne.

Recently, he made a splash by openly condemning Hollywood’s lack of originality, slamming top name stars like George Clooney and proclaiming himself a genius. We cannot overstate it enough; for gamers and film fans alike, this is one Loop you will not want to miss!

Has PlayStation Home Opened Early?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 10, 2008 3:03 PM

Assignment time: Does the below video show a user downloading, logging into and using the PlayStation 3's not released Home? Or is it the best-looking fake we've seen all week?

We're guessing the former, because the uploader of the youtube video seems so adamant! He assures everyone he is not a beta tester, and he did nothing to hack anything. He just got lucky.

'Bad Company' Drops Weapon DLC?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, April 10, 2008 2:58 PM

Sometimes, an internet protest works and this seems to be the case with Battlefield Bad Company. EA seems to have dropped plans for paid weapon downloads.

Instead, the 5 weapons will be available initially to gamers that purchase the Gold Edition of the game. Less important regular version gamers will have to hit an in-game level of 25 to unlock the weapons.

Hit the jump for EA's great back-pedaling quote on the issue.

Blockbuster Wants to Stream Movies?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, April 10, 2008 2:42 PM

After getting whipped by Netflix on mail-order rentals, Blockbuster is looking to pick a fight with Apple. Word is the Blockbuster is developing a set-top box to stream movies.

Details could surface as early as this month. A set-top box would allow for on-demand rentals.

There's no official comment from Blockbuster yet, but a spokesperson said:

"We're talking to numerous companies and vendors about products, services, alliances and initiatives that can help us achieve our mission to transform Blockbuster into a company that provides access to media content across multiple channels -- from our stores, by mail, through kiosks, through downloading, through portable content-enabled devices -- so it's not surprising that there are rumors out there."

It'll be funny when Netflix finally releases their rumored set-top box and beats Blockbuster again.

Epic Fail: Movie Adaptations

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 10, 2008 2:15 PM

You can't expect Hollywood screenwriters to think of every movie. They gotta come from other sources, and, when the venerable, traditional sources of film's raw material (TV, Novels, Plays, Older Movies) runs out, filmmakers turn to other raw materials.

Below are the most egregious failures in film adaptations in the history of ever. It's personal, not comprehensive, so feel free to add your own in our comments section!

Silent Hill (Based on the videogames)

Step 1: Take a beloved franchise.
Step 2: Take the setting of the game and make everything else up.
Step 3: Throw in Pyramid Head.

This movie is an Epic Fail because it had so much potential. It even had a great start to it, but it’s like the film switched directors half-way through. The ending contained a sequence that basically tried to explain what was going on in a few minutes and I’m not even sure they knew what what going on in this terrible adaptation.

Last.fm Discovers Music

Posted by Frank Meyer - Thursday, April 10, 2008 1:14 PM

CBS-owned social-networking site Last.fm announced yesterday that since they launched on-demand streaming service two months ago, CD and download sales through its partnership with Amazon.com have more than doubled.

They say this means that free streaming music turns people on to new music and encourages them to buy it, dammit!

Last.fm's numbers seem to prove that letting people sample full-length tracks is a terrific way to stimulate sales, as opposed to going out of your way to prevent people from hearing new music for fear they will steal it (like the rest of the music industry seems to think).

GNR’s Chinese Democracy Finished?

Posted by Frank Meyer - Thursday, April 10, 2008 11:46 AM

In the “If You Believe This, Then I Have A Piece Of The Brooklyn Bridge To Sell You” Dept, Therockradio.com is reporting that Axl Rose has finished work on the loooong-awaited new Guns N Roses album Chinese Democracy, the effort he has been working on for the past 14 years.

Right.

Apparently, the band's record label, Geffen Records, have confirmed they have received a finished copy of the album, and are currently discussing money and rights issues with Rose (the surely-sh*tty album is reported to have cost in excess of $13million to produce).

Universal Says Promo CDs Not For Sale

Posted by Frank Meyer - Thursday, April 10, 2008 11:41 AM

Hey journalists, radio station employees, and members of the music industry, you know how you get sent promo CDs of upcoming albums to review, write about or hype? Well, it turns out that even though these Cds were sent to you by the label, you do not own them. Or so says Universal…

Yes, according to Universal, an eBay reseller who offered Universal promo discs for sale is in violation of the law based on the "not for resale" label printed on each disc. Universal argues that it never transferred ownership when it sent them out and that the discs are merely "licensed" to those who receive them. But the case raises an important question: can labels control the distribution of a product once they have sent it to others, or does the US "first sale" doctrine give people the right to do as they like with the promo discs?

'Lost' Needs Another Hour This Season

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, April 10, 2008 11:38 AM

From wondering where we were going to get our Lost fix during the writers strike, to the embarrassment of riches we currently have with 13 out of the projected 16 episodes actually getting to air this season, we're pretty lucky, us Lost fans. Well, now we're getting luckier. Carton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, the producers of the show, have requested an extra hour from ABC to wrap up the season the way they want.

This means that most of what they'd originally intended to do with this season can still happen, and we will suffer no ill effects from the strike. Fantastic news all around, wouldn't you say? Also, if ABC refuses, they should be shot into space, as an organization.

SEGA has hit the brakes on SEGA Racing Studio, the development house behind the recently released SEGA Rally REVO. The studio has officially been shut down.

This is most likely due to poor sales of Rally REVO.

We can only hope that this is how SEGA broke the news to the studio.

Of course it's full of spoilers (if a racing game can have spoilers).

Rockstar Wants 18+ Rating Created in Australia

Posted by Ty Colfax - Thursday, April 10, 2008 10:37 AM

Rockstar is pushing for an 18 and up maturity rating for GTA IV in Australia. The problem is there is no current rating in Aussieworld for 18+ so they're also pushing regulatory boards to create the new rating. As it stands the game has been modified to adhere to their highest MA15+ rating.

Rockstar isn't specific about how the game was changed but they did issue this P/Rspeak statement: "While there are some minor differences between the Australian and US/EU versions, they are not significant and we do not believe they take away from the level of scope and detail that make GTA IV such an incredible experience."
