Sessler's Soapbox: Review To A Kill
Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 6:22 PM
Last week, X-Play reviewed Crisis Core for the PSP and, well, apparently the review generated a little controversy amongst fans of the show and the Final Fantasy franchise.
In this week's Sessler's Soapbox, Adam takes on his critics and explains why he gets so worked up about being accused of "not being in line with other reviewers."

'CoD4' Maps Back On For This Week?
Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 5:36 PM
Despite earlier reports, it looks like the Call of Duty 4 maps are working their way through certification and should hopefully release this Thursday or Friday.
According to their blog, "Despite what the internet might tell you (including some “official” sources), the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare variety map pack has NOT been delayed until the 10th. As of right now we’re pushing certification for an on-time release for April 3rd or 4th."
We like! Again, this is Xbox Live only as the PSN Store is down for revamping.

Shop by Text Message with Amazon
Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 5:25 PM
Looking to buy something from Amazon.com without access to the internet? Send a text to AMAZON (262966) with an items description, UPC, or ISBN code and Amazon will hit you back with a list of potential matches.
Reply to that with the item you want and Amazon will call you to confirm.
We're a little sad the entire process cannot be done by text and we'd prefer a web portal or iPhone version of Amazon.com.
What do you think? Want to buy things by text?

GamePro got to play a near complete build of Metal Gear Solid 4 and they have posted their impressions of the game. Guess what? It's awesome.
"From the opening scenes, a palpable cloud of doom hangs over Metal Gear Solid 4. Once an unstoppable force, the legendary stealth operative Solid Snake is starting to show his age -- literally."

Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 5:13 PM

According to leaked images from the May issue of the Official PLAYSTATION Magazine, the Home Beta should be available to the public "very soon."
The quote came from the Senior Director of the PSN, Susan Panico.
Personally, I remain skeptical, but am definitely eager to see what it has to offer.

'GTA IV's Sexy Content
Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 3:39 PM

Britain recently rated Grand Theft Auto IV, which is great considering the meaningless scandal surrounding Manhunt 2. Out of their report, however, come some details about some of the sexy content found in the game.
"During gameplay the character can pick up prostitutes... What follows is an un-detailed portrayal of masturbation, fellatio and intercourse. The character can also visit lap dancing clubs and request a private dance."
Hottt.

'Madden '09' Scrapped For PC
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 3:33 PM
Sorry PC football-heads: There will be no Madden '09 on your game-playing machine of choice. You'll have to join the rest of the world on consoles.
EA's Peter Moore posts:
We knew that our decision to not develop this year’s Madden for the PC would be an unpopular decision in some circles. But I’ll reiterate what I said a couple of weeks ago in this space…the PC presents some very serious business challenges to us in the sports category, particularly because so many of you all are playing your favorite sports games on the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. We are committed to shipping a limited number of our games on the PC this year, but we’ve also had to cut a few of our games from the platform. We do have ideas for how to revitalize the PC for sports games and the types of games that are best suited to the platform, and we’ll continue to explore those.

SIXAXIS Discontinued in Favor of DualShock 3
Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 3:03 PM

The DualShock 3 hits next week and that's all you'll get from now on. Unsurprisingly, the SIXAXIS has been discontinued. It's rumble for all!
The SIXAXIS will remain on shelves until it sells out so if you really hate rumble like Ty Colfax, you'd best run out and get one now.

Microsoft Not Making Blu-Ray Player
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 2:38 PM
Microsoft has denied rumors that they are producing Blu-Ray players for the 360, and insist that they are doing just fine for the moment, thank you. In addition, the 360 is selling based on the gaming software, and they are content to offer HD video for download.
This doesn't mean that it's not in their plans to eventually do so, but, for now, there's nothing moving on the Blu-Ray front. Still, we're betting that some sort of formal announcement will be coming in the future, most likely in the range of time directly preceding or during E3 '08...just a guess.

Hunky Beckham Gets Gold iPod
Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 2:16 PM
What type of shwag do you think soccer superstar and Mr. Posh Spice gets for just being himself?
A gold watch?
A fancy iPod?
Well, how about a gold 32GB iPod?
Yes, that’s exactly what his English teammates awarded David Beckham after participating in his 100th appearance for the national club.
Crazy, huh?
(Actually, the street value is only about $1,188…which is actually not all that expensive a gift for the hunkiest man alive!)

"Office" Spin-Off On Super Bowl Sunday
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 2:11 PM

NBC will air the pilot of The Office's spin-off show, as yet unnamed, on Super Bowl Sunday, according to the schedule they've released for the Summer and Fall. In addition, Saturday Night Live will take advantage of the election season to air four Thursday night prime-time specials in the Fall, called SNL Thursday Night Live.
Also, ER will return for what most people are presuming will be a final season, in which they are attempting to get back a great many of the stars that have left the show over the years, including George Clooney, for a farewell send-off. Also, the little show that could, Friday Night Lights, will return for a third season.
Now you know. It's must see TV all over the damn place, innit?

Cell Phone Calls…From The Dead?
Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 1:59 PM
Ever wonder how much that huge long distance bill from when your Aunt Flo called ya from France is gonna be? Or when Uncle Bernie called ya from Iowa City and babbled on for an hour?
Well, how much do ya think it’d be if you got a call from…say….the afterlife!?!?
That’s just what appears to be happening to UK man Frank Jones, whose says his dead wife has been calling him from the grave, where she was buried with her cell.
Five years ago Jones’s son died of a brain tumor at 32, and three months later his wife Sadie died from a heart attack at the age of 69.
Sadie was a cell phone addict. "She always had a mobile with her," Jones said, which is why he buried her with it.
Now he believes Sadie has been sending him text messages with words only she would say (and there is no return number on the messages or missed calls).
How could this possibly be happening?
Why, because of a haunted house, of course!

Nyko's Frontman Available Now
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 1:52 PM

Third-party peripheral maker Nyko have released a very cool wireless Guitar Hero III and Rock Band controller for the PS3. The Frontman is playable on both games, boasts an interesting look and unique feel, and is available now.
This fake-instrument solves the perpetual "second guitar" dilemma for PS3 owners, and it does it at a great price: It's only 59.99, ten bucks cheaper than the first-party Guitar Hero Guitars.
We've been playing around with one for a couple days here at G4, and it's a solid product and definitely beats having one guitar. As far as how it compares to first-person axes: it's close, but no cigar. Although it plays both games, we like it less than either first party 'git.

eBay Bans Auctions of Digital Property
Posted by Ty Colfax - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 1:31 PM
eBay has dropped the banhammer on auctions that contain digital property. The trouble was that allowing digital goods meant sellers could put up as many auctions as they wanted, because they had an unlimited number of copies that could be delivered. These multiple listings were choking the pipes and making it hard for people to find what they were actually looking for when browsing.
In other words, you won't be able to get virtual gold or that pdf brochure on how to consolidate your debt like you used to. Guess I can't sell my level 70 Undead Priest that I've been working on for 11 months? tehsuXX!1
Oh yeah, WoW auctions were already yanked last year:

72% Of Population Playing Games
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 1:03 PM
A recent survey concluded that 72% of the population of the United States played videogames over the course of the past year, which is an all-time high. This is an 8% jump over the past year, which is a pretty big increase. Also, 40% of the population have played some form of game online since 2007, which is pretty amazing as well, with over 90% of those being on the PC.
What does that all mean? Nothing but good things for the industry, that's for sure. People of all stripes are playing games in all kinds of ways, and consoles are giving way to PC gaming, which is certainly surging. It's good. There's room for everyone in the pool, so let's all play together!

Dualshock 3 Next Week
Posted by Ty Colfax - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 9:59 AM

Dualshock 3 is coming out this week and will give you the latest in vibrating controller technology. It's compatible right away with a few games, most of them made by Sony, and surely there are more on the way and maybe some patches for games people actually play.
The controller has SIXAXIS and it's wireless through the Bluetooth styles. It's gonna run you $54.99 and you'll be able to find it at the usual retail spots. Personally, the rumble is annoying and has been ever since N64, but to each his/her own.
For a full list of the games that are compatible with the Dualshock 3, hit that jiznump.
