Posted by Ty Colfax - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 4:53 PM

Before Attack of the Show goes live every day, the control room puts together a little montage of shots set to music to make sure the video feed is active. Here's just a little taste of the kind of crazy bs that goes on daily at the G4 studios. Enjoy!

btw, Olivia is really into pie right now.

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 4:11 PM

If you were really into Trauma Center, but the surgery sim has grown stale, then we have good news for you. Altus has announced Trauma Center 2 for the Nintendo DS, coming soon, and it has some improvements over the original. Among them is the ease with which you can use some of the instruments with the stylus.

Sadly, there's not much else in the way of information, including a release date, but we thought you might like to know what was going on. So, scrub up and get ready to operate, champ.

New 'Duke Nuke' Art! (April Fools!)

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 3:01 PM

We enjoy a good April Fool's prank as much as the next gaming blog, but the entry from 3D Realms just makes us sad.

Above is the new character design for the pig cops in Duke Nukem Forever. Ha Ha, obviously a joke, except all 3D realms ever does is trick us. Whenever they offer a release date for DNF, we assume it's a joke, so should we assume that this pig drawing, that seems like a joke, is actually going to be in the game??

Columnist: 'Games Waste of Time'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 2:26 PM

We assume you all actually like videogames--not all games or genres of games, but the concept of videogames. Probably most of the people you hang out with are okay with gaming to. Perhaps you're friends with so many pro-gamers, you forget what non-gamers sound like. If so, England's Times Online wants to remind you.

"I hate video games, on or offline," writes guest columnist Giles Whittell. "I hate the way they suck real people into fake worlds and hold on to them for decades at a time. I hate being made to feel hateful for saying so, and I hate being told to immerse myself in them before passing judgment, because it feels like being told to immerse myself in smack and teenage pregnancy before passing judgment on them."

"Compared with everything else on offer in a kid's life, video games and heroin and teenage pregnancy are a colossal waste of time," She adds.

Just wanted to remind you what a lot of people think of your hobby.

Girl Gamers Gain Grands

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 1:32 PM

Sony is sponsoring a contest for G.I.R.L. gamers.

Applications are being accepted for the 2008 G.I.R.L. Game Design Competition. Scholarship of up to $10,000 are being offered in order to "educate and recruit more women into the field of video game production and design." Right now, the scholarship is only available to students of The Art Institutes.

"The secret is out: Females game. We're just trying to encourage more women to make the games they obviously enjoy playing, said Torrie Dorrell, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. "With the application process starting today, we're taking a concrete step towards opening the door a little wider for women who want to go into game development, and that can only help expand our industry's audience."

Applications and complete rules for entry are available online, right here.

Might we suggest a baking and/or childcare simulator to the ladies out there? (Girls like that kind of thing, right?)

Guitar Hero Rip-Offs Rising

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 12:27 PM

And so it begins…

The onslaught of Guitar Hero rip-off games that is sure to come down the pike, beginning with…Guitar Rising!

Guitar Rising is, according to the website, “a music video game where the player plays a real guitar as cued by the game’s visuals. Following rock music sequences and streaming notes, players play guitar melodies and rhythms. Beginner difficulty levels are designed for non-guitar players and hard difficulties will challenge experienced guitarists.”

Sound familiar?

GameTank unveiled Guitar Rising duirng Demo Night at the Independent Game Conference in Austin, TX, where it was (shockingly) awarded the Developer's Choice Award by popular vote.

Guitar Rising is expected to be released in late 2008.

MS Has Patent on Custom In-Game Music?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 12:01 PM

One of the biggest missing features from the PS3 is the ability to play your own music while in a game. Turns out, this could be because of a patent that Microsoft holds. We know it's April Fool's Day, but this patent looks pretty legit.

This could keep Sony from ever including this feature. It appears that developers have a loophole around this patent by making the in-game soundtrack ability on a game-by-game basis. The patent prohibits another company from a system-wide solution.

How much do you want this feature in the PS3? We really, really want it.

'Dark Knight' Plays Fool's Prank

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 11:35 AM

We were hoping that the only April Fool's joke to come out of The Dark Knight would be that Heath Ledger's death was a prank, but that's not the case. He's really dead. On the other hand, there is a new viral site for the movie that has something to do with April Fool's Day, though we're not exactly sure what it is.

Calling itself the Clown Travel Agency, the site leaves the clue of a list of cities where...something...is to be found, and then a number of passport stamps which shows the cities in which whatever that thing is has already been acquired. It's not really an April Fool's Day joke, so much as it is a sort of scavenger hunt. Either way, it's still pretty cool. Go there.

Radiohead Fans Remix Rainbows

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 11:26 AM

Alt-rock gods Radiohead is teamed with iTunes and GarageBand for an interactive project which allows fans to rework the second single from In Rainbows, "Nude."

Utilizing the Internet again to promote In Rainbows, the band is selling five separate tracks from the recording -- bass, voice, guitar, strings/effects and drums -- from iTunes Plus for remixers to use as tools. The customer is then sent an access code to complete the task via the GarageBand or Logic music production software.

China to Open Internet During Olympics

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 11:21 AM

Sort of. It looks like China will allow foreign press to access the internet while they are covering the Olympics in Beijing, but still restrict Chinese language versions of websites like Wikipedia and BBC News.

China is notorious for censoring the internet and trying to control the flow of digital information, but experts believe failing to open the web for press "would reflect very poorly" on China.

It's looking like you'll be able to get Olympic coverage just fine, but don't expect China to lift the Great Firewall any time soon.

'Price Is Right' Online Cash Game

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 11:13 AM

You want fun and excitement? In a story we're pretty sure isn't April Fool's related, The Price Is Right will come to home gaming online in the near future, as FremantleMedia has made a deal with developer WorldWinner to put Price online, where you will be able to compete for fabulous cash and...cash.

There's no word on how the game will actually work, but we're betting hard on Plinko. And, of course, we're hoping for the Alpine mountain climber game, which has the greatest yodeling bit of all time, shown here.

Remember to have your pets spayed or neutered.

Pirate Gets Saucy Over Torrent Bay

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 10:59 AM

The man behind bit torrent tracking site The Pirate Bay has some choice words for the record companies trying to shut him down: "[the] record companies can go screw themselves"

Yup, that’s what Gottfried Svartholm Warg said Monday in response to a music-industry demand for $2.5 million in damages.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry made the compensation claim Monday in a Swedish court, where Warg  and the rest of the Pirates have been indicted for copyright violations related to the sharing of 24 music albums, nine films and four videogames using the service.

What? Only nine films and four videogames?
