DiCaprio, Scott Braving 'New World'

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, March 31, 2008 2:02 PM

Aldous Huxley's dystopic novel Brave New World will finally get its first film treatment, and will star Leonardo DiCaprio, who is well-acquainted with Huxley's family, and Sir Ridley Scott, who will direct. The path to making the film was cleared when Huxley's will, long held up in court, was finally deciphered and all rights and such delineated.

For those of you who have not read the novel, and we can only imagine that there are very, very few of you who haven't, Brave New World is about a society of people complacent with drugs and entertainment, and one man who lives sort of off the grid that ends up being a lighthouse keeper. Sounds exciting, don't it? It is. You'll have to see it when it comes out.

'Endless Ocean:' Build Your Own Soundtrack

Posted by Rick Damigella - Monday, March 31, 2008 1:36 PM

One of the most striking things about Wii scuba-diving game Endless Ocean is the music that accompanies it. The lady behind that haunting voice is New Zealander Hayley Westenra. This 20 year-old soprano has a magical set of pipes that fits so well with Endless Ocean you would have thought these songs were written for the game.

Endless Ocean features nine songs from the angelic voiced Westenra, all of which are available on iTunes. So for those of you brave enough to put something so pretty on your iPods next to your playlists of illicitly downloaded Swedish death metal, here is a do-it-yourself soundtrack list to make your own Endless Ocean portable listening experience.

Prayer (Title track)
Pokarekare Ana
Shenandoah
River of Dreams
Benedictus
Amazing Grace

NBC Placating You With Fantasy/Action

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, March 31, 2008 1:24 PM

NBC knows that the world is coming to an end, so they're looking to make your demise as delightful as possible, but wheeling out a slate of fantasy and action television to take your mind off of what's going on. Included in that will be a series based on the new Knight Rider, as well as a new version of Robinson Crusoe, which will focus on someone who has shipwrecked on an island. Sound familiar?

There will also be a show about telepathy, as well as one called Fear Itself, which we can only assume will be some sort of horror anthology series, kind of like Tales From the Crypt. Sounds like a lot of fun, and a great way to pass the time while the collapse of our socioeconomic system proves to be the end of society as we know it!

CIA Buys Google Hardware

Posted by Brian Leahy - Monday, March 31, 2008 1:21 PM

The CIA just bought a mess of hardware from Google to help organize and search their spy information. Not only that, the CIA is now running a spy database Wikipedia style on their private servers.

That's right. Spies are now editing each other's entries on terrorists to help share information.

While this seems like a great way to digitally consolidate intelligence, that's got to be just about the biggest hacking target we can think of.

Good luck keeping that secure, CIA.

'Superman' Family Wins Big Lawsuit

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, March 31, 2008 11:57 AM

The family of Jerry Siegel, who was the original creator of Superman, have won a lawsuit which helps to revert some of the copyright back to the family, giving them a cut of the profits made from the character for all properties after 1999, including a share of profits, if there are any, from 2006's Superman Returns.

Also, the copyright might, as a result of this ruling, revert to the family in total after 2013, which means that anyone who wanted to do anything with Superman, such as a Justice League or Superman franchise, would have to negotiate with an entity that feels like it's been ripped off for the better part of the past 30 years. Doesn't seem like an enviable task.

Chocobo's Dungeon Coming To US July 8

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Monday, March 31, 2008 11:26 AM

On July 8th, Square Enix Inc. will release Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. Everyone's favorite yellow chicken takes on trademark job classes from the franchise such as black knight, mage, and scholar to keep the multi-person party feel of the series, unlocking more jobs as players progress through the game. The story will be based around Chocobo being transported to a mysterious town where the local's memories are erased every time the clocktower bell chimes. Sounds like wallstreet. One day a strange boy named Raffaello comes along and builds dungeons of memories to try and help the townspeople remember, so of course you, playing as humanoid poultry, will have to search through the dungeons and find everyone's memories.

You can pick up Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon for the Wii on July 8th of this year for $39.99. Oh, and you can get that awesome t-shirt on Jinx.com.

Web Getting Hacked More and More

Posted by Brian Leahy - Monday, March 31, 2008 11:25 AM

There is a growing menace spreading around the internets. Hackers are inserting malicious code into a reported 1 million websites, many of them high profile targets.

The code is snuck into search results and even spreads to Google's cached search results page. Immediate concerns seem to be the pushing of malicious programs to the user under the guise of anti-spyware programs and virus scanners.

However, this could be the starting point of a much larger attack. Researchers are urging companies and website owners to check their results better and more frequently to root out the bad code.

As always, be careful on the internet. It's a dangerous place.

Ubisoft Making More Than Expected

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 31, 2008 11:24 AM

Big investment banks may be spiraling into a nightmare of bankruptcy and disgrace, but not Ubisoft. The French game-maker is doing great! And to prove it, Ubisoft is revising its profit expectations upwards.

Ubisoft now expects full-year 2007-08 sales of around 920 million Euros compared to a previous guidance of approximately 875 million Euros, announced on January 23, 2008.

Ubisoft credits their success to better-than-expected sales for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Assassin's Creed, and the Games For Everyone brand.

Hacking Facebook in Under a Minute

A hacker demonstrates how to change someone's mood in the Moods application on Facebook. Watch the video and marvel at the genius of something totally useless.

At the end of the day, this is a vulnerability in the application and not the app. Facebook might have to start cracking down on unsecure apps soon. Who knows what hackers will be able to change your mood to?!

Hackers Causing Epilepsy

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 31, 2008 11:02 AM

A group of hackers descended on a support message board for epileptics last weekend and posted animations designed to trigger epileptic seizures.

"We are seeing people affected," says Ken Lowenberg, senior director of web and print publishing at the Epilepsy Foundation. "It's fortunately only a handful. It's possible that people are just not reporting yet -- people affected by it may not be coming back to the forum so fast."

One person the attack did affect: 33 year-old RyAnne Fultz. She says she clicked on a forum post with a legitimate-sounding title and her browser was taken over by a pattern of squares rapidly flashing in different colors. Fultz says "I was on the phone when it happened, and I couldn't move and couldn't speak."

Other users reported migraine headaches.

This is probably the first hacking attack in the history of the internet to result in real-life harm to victims, and is thought to be the work of Anonymous.

PS3 Exploit Found, World Told "Hello"

Posted by Brian Leahy - Monday, March 31, 2008 10:29 AM

The PSP is well known for it's hackability and it looks like the PS3 is no different. Established PSP hacker, Dragula96, has found an exploit in the newest PS3 firmware (2.20) and has already created a "Hello World!" proof of concept application.

This could open the doors to all sorts of homebrew on the PS3 like emulators and community games. More discussion and a video after the break.
