Mark Cuban Bringing NBA To Theaters

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 21, 2008 2:06 PM

Mark Cuban is trying to re-invigorate the NBA and movies at the same time by bringing 3D basketball games to your local movie theater. The first will feature Cuban's Dallas Mavericks and the lowly Los Angeles Clippers, getting it on this Tuesday night, shown at a theater in Dallas.

We don't know if people will go and see these games, but we think it would be a great idea to be able to watch a basketball game in large scale and in 3D. Think of how awesome a Kobe Bryant 360 dunk would look if he were 30 feet high.

Pentagon Building Contact HUD

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, March 21, 2008 1:24 PM

How would you like a contact lens you could put in your eye and get a constant heads-up display? DARPA  is working on just that project for soldiers, further blurring the line between videogames and real life.

And not in some far-off future. But in "three to five years." Here's the official word:

A limiting factor to untethered, augmented and/or mixed reality applications is the bulkiness, power consumption, cost, limited resolution and limited field of view of head-mounted displays. DARPA seeks to leap beyond incremental, evolutionary enhancement of head-mounted display technologies to a see-through contact lens on which images can be displayed. This information might be command-and-control information, not unlike information provided to players of first-person, shooter-type videogames or synthetic entities and effects in a live training environment.

If I had one of these, it would be like, "Steve, You're a little hungy!" and I'd totally go get a taco.

Old Lady Sues Everyone Over Lasers

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, March 21, 2008 1:13 PM

Retired Columbia University Professor Gertrude Neumark Rothschild has filed a complaint against Sony, Samsung, Nokia, and almsot 30 other companies for their use of light-emitting and laser diodes over which she claims to have patent.

Since Rothschild complained to the US International Trade Comission, this has the potential to stop all international sales from these companies until or unless they settle with the kindly old lady.

There is precedent in this case, as Rothschild already filed a suit against Philips and other companies which was settled out of court. Yes the format war may be over, but there is a chance that one day we will all have to pay a little old lady royalties to watch 300 on a Blu-Ray disc.

Report: Downloaded Media Stays on the Computer

Posted by Ty Colfax - Friday, March 21, 2008 12:57 PM

A report by Macrovision says that only 5% of video downloaders ever watch their new content on a television and that only 10% even have a desire to do so. The study surveyed 2,254 adults in the US last December and…wait! 2,254 people? Can this really be a representative sample? Seems a little low.

Common sense indicates that because of annoying DRM and a gap in technical knowledge (let's face it, the average Joe doesn't even know how to take a download and get it to his TV,) hardly anyone does this and people aren't losing sleep over it. Display technology between TVs and computer monitors is starting to all bleed into one industry, so apart from the quality of the initial download, there shouldn't be a measurable difference in the picture or sound.

Alright, informal poll time: Have you ever downloaded something and watched it on your TV? Maybe we can get 2,254 answers, too.

Politically Incorrect Phrase Of The Year

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, March 21, 2008 12:51 PM

Global Language Monitor has labeled Don Imus's "Nappy-Headed Hoes" comment as the most egregious politically incorrect phrase in 2007, just behind "Ho-Ho-Ho" and "Carbon Footprint Stomping". You hear that Santa? You're almost as much of a racist bastard as Imus. For shame!

Normally we would tell you what some of the other phrases on the list were, but to be honest they're so ridiculous we don't want to give them any more credit. The number one spot was pretty well deserved, but we hear more politicially incorrect phrases every day walking around the G4 offices. Can I sue someone for that? In fact, go to their Language Monitor website and let them know that they're not doing a very good job. Truthfully, many of you have posted much more offensive phrases in our comments section. Might want to let Yahoo know.

To which we would reply "Yes, yes you are. Because D&D is ultimate awesome." And to those of you who have love for the game that started it all, you're about to have your mind blown.

So sharpen your pencils, clear off the kitchen table, and warm up your dice-throwing hand. This is...

'ROCK BAND' BOSTON PACK!!!

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 21, 2008 10:57 AM

Like an explosion of joy, the Harmonix team have made TheFeed the happiest conglomerate of writers and editors on Earth with the announcement of the six-song Boston song pack that will be coming on Tuesday. We have literally lost the ability to emote, as this announcement is easily the best news to come down the pike since the Germans surrendered and ended World War II.

We know that we write hyperbole all the time here at TheFeed, but the exclamations of happiness that followed the announcement of the tracks is real, and it's beautiful. Here are the songs you will find ALL of us playing on Tuesday night.

  • "Piece of Mind"
  • "More Than A Feeling"
  • "Hitch A Ride"
  • "Smokin'"
  • "Rock N' Roll Band"
  • "Something About You"

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Harmonix! It is a Good Friday, after all!

YouTube Awards Honor and Depress

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, March 21, 2008 10:53 AM

The Second Annual YouTube Video Awards just took place, honoring 12 internet video creators and their body of work. Fellow users voted on twelve different categories; music, sports, comedy, instructional, short film, inspirational, commentary, creative, politics, series, eyewitness and "adorable."

Now, The Feed loves honoring good work in internet videos. Tay Zanday really did deserve his award for "Chocolate Rain" as the best music video on YouTube in 2007. The fact that winners were determined by the voting of their peers and note just hwo many hits they got is also fairly admirable. Our gripe is with the assortment of winners, running the gambit from Goofus to Galant. I mean, Michael Buckley won "Best Commentary Video" for trashing LonelyGirl15. Now don't get us wrong, we LOVE "What the Buck", but no one deserves an award for making fun of the easiest target on the planet. That's like making fun of the special education class and then getting taken out for ice cream for doing a good job. Also that Buffalo vs. Lions vs. Crocodile video beat out "Don't Tase Me Bro!", that's just plain wrong.

Check out the full article on Yahoo News to read about all the winner and who they beat out to be famous on the internets.

'Dead Space' Movie Bridges Comic, Game

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 21, 2008 10:38 AM

Before Dead Space comes to gaming consoles in October, EA and Starz Media will team up to produce an animated film that will bridge the comic book and the game. The plot of the film will center on an interstellar mining ship that accidentally awakens a dormant alien race. Oh, noes!

The film is set to be aired on broadcast television, most likely in conjunction with the release of the game in the Fall. Other than that, however, there is no information on where and when you'll be able to see it, though we have a feeling we'll know more in the next couple of months.

Nintendo Stock Downgraded

Posted by Ty Colfax - Friday, March 21, 2008 10:24 AM

KBC Securities of Japan has downgraded Nintendo's target price by 30% and change it's investment rating from "buy" to "hold." They're "expecting a tougher trading environment," most likely due to the increased market shares of Sony and Microsoft, coupled with Nintendo's weak vision for online content.

On a global scale, Nintendo is still in the lead, all the while losing the hardcore demographic of gamers that grew up on NES. They still making they money, tho, so a downgrade might be a little premature.

Bob and David Back On HBO

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 21, 2008 10:09 AM

For those who mourn the end of such HBO classics as The Sopranos and Six Feet Under, rejoice! Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are returning to the cable network with a new show called David's Situation, their first collaboration on TV since Mr. Show.

The show will focus on David Cross, as himself, living in an apartment with an ultra conservative and a crazy hippie. In short, it sounds like a cross between The Sarah Silverman Program and The Young Ones...starring David Cross...and written by Bob and David. It's perfect in its construction.

Jesus Mii Invites You To Easter Services

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, March 21, 2008 9:39 AM

"Come and follow Mii", emplores the cartoonish representaion of our lord and savior. Yeah right, like I'm gonna be suckered into that one again. Eurogamer did some digging and found that Mission Bay Community Church in San Francisco is using a Jesus Mii to advertise its Easter celebrations.

Now while Mission Bay Church may be a bit unorthodox, seeing how they play music and serve coffee to entice visitors, but we can promise you, they will not allow you to play Wii during the sermon. Probably not even a DS with headphones either. That, in itself, is an insult to the son of god. I know for a fact Jesus loves the Wii, he plays on my baseball team all the time.

LeBouf Credits 'Tetris'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, March 21, 2008 9:37 AM

We hear a lot of negative things about videogames, but, at least in the case of millionaire actor Shia LeBouf, videogames can help your career.

In a new behind-the-scenes of Indiana Jones 4 video, LeBouf credits Tetris with helping him become an expert on switchblade flourishes.

"It became my Tetris," LeBouf said. "It became my videogame."
