Google Thinks Android Will Crush iPhone

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, March 14, 2008 5:38 PM

Apple certainly has the spotlight right now with their recent iPhone SDK release, but Google isn't going to let them hog all the attention.

Rich Miner, who is the group manager of mobile platforms at Google, said, "Once you have devices out there from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and so on, there's a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone."

"It's great that people are finally building tools so all of these third-party applications can be built and get out there, (but) there are things I saw people doing with the first version of the Android SDK that it seems like you can't do with the iPhone - at least at the moment," he said.

Let's examine this.

Cyberathlete Professional League Done

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 14, 2008 3:49 PM

The Cyberathlete Professional League has shut its metaphorical doors, and will cease operations, effective immediately. Citing way too many other leagues and too much competition, they have decided not to move on. Where, we can hear you asking, will all of those cyberathletes go for jobs?

Perhaps they can cybercoach, or get involved in cyber college sports. Luckily, the league didn't last long enough for there to be a cyber steroid scandal, so it moves into the ether as an untainted entity.

Sony Pictures' Head Going Gaming

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 14, 2008 3:42 PM

Yair Landau has been the head of Sony Pictures' digital division for the past decade, and has worked for the company for the better part of the last 20 years, but he is moving to their gaming department, working under Kaz Hirai. Though it's not known what he will do there, they say he will be working on "a new games and animation venture to develop and produce content for use across all media."

That's a pretty significant jump, and it means that the studio will be pouring more resources into their gaming division over the course of the next few years. It also shows you that what people in the entertainment industry really want to be doing these days is working on videogames. Can you blame them?

'Plunder' Screenshots

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, March 14, 2008 3:26 PM

Plunder is a downloadable real-time strategy game by Capcom for the Xbox Live Arcade PC and PSN.

It was at least partially inspired by Pimps at Sea, the joke name Bungie gives when developing Halo games.

We haven't had a chance to play this one yet, but it looks promising. Here's a gallery!

Obama Coming To Comic-Con?

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 14, 2008 2:48 PM

Barack Obama might be courting the ever-important geek vote by reaching out to Comic-Con in the hopes of making an appearance there, according to reports. No, we are not kidding. Now, we've got no idea what Senator Obama might be wanting to do there, aside from the fact that he could very well be a comic book fan, but we think it's pretty damn cool, nonetheless.

Wouldn't it be hilarious to see Obama at the convention engaged in some cosplay, or waiting in line to meet Brian Michael Bendis or some such? Now that's the audacity of hope, friends, and we LOVE it.

Yes, folks, Powerglove have arrived!

"Who would ever guess that Dragonforce are into videogames, eh?" Powerglove said in a statement (actually we did, since Dragonforce performed on Attack of the Show awhile back…see above).

Fluid Entertainment wants to make sure the next generation will be full of dirty stinking hippies. Trinity Ventures has stepped forward and given Fluid 3.2 million dollars for development of a "green" themed MMO for young children.

The financing will be used to complete the development of an engaging, interactive and environmentally themed game for kids; not only tapping into the monthly subscription fee cash cow that is the MMO market, but also making sure that households will be filled with compact florescent light bulbs for decades to follow. No further details have been released, but check out the story over at IGN so you know why all your children will end up looking like this.

Awesome Monks Play 'Counter-Strike'

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, March 14, 2008 2:28 PM

This is just a great story. Here is a group of people that have dedicated their lives to peace and tranquility that regularly shoot each other in Counter-Strike.

A group of Chinese monks that happens to live next to a cybercafé that enjoy rousing games of Counter-Strike because their code doesn't prohibit them from virtual violence.

They're probably really good too. That meditation must help, but we'd love to see one of these monks just go absolutely insane with game rage.

Still, it's nice to see that this group of monks clearly represents the fact that video games are not reality. Rock on, monks.

NIN CD Nabs Millions; Inspires Digi Films

Posted by Frank Meyer - Friday, March 14, 2008 2:20 PM

Despite the album being widely available on torrent sites, the new Nine Inch Nails album, the 36-song self-released boxset Ghosts I-IV, has generated $1.6 million in sales revenue via 800,000 transactions in the first week of the album's availability, according to frontman Trent Reznor.

Of course, Reznor included free downloads in these figures, which are not being released to SoundScan in the traditional manner, according to Billboard.

Ghosts I-IV is currently the top-selling album on the Amazon MP3 store, where Reznor paid approximately $38 to have it distributed.

The collection has also inspired a film festival of shorts based on the music, to be held on the group's YouTube page, which went live on Thursday. The page will begin accepting submissions immediately through May 1. Music from Ghosts I – IV will be available for filmmakers starting on April 1 through YouTube's AudioSwap channel. Submissions will be personally reviewed by Trent Reznor, who will host a festival featuring the best entries at a later date.

Genki will be releasing an expansion for it's WiiWare launch puzzler, LONPOS. The cost of the expansion is going to be 500 Wii Points which is half of what the game is going to cost to download in the first place. Bandai Namco has also announced recently that their WiiWare launch game, Mojipittan, will be available with an expanded download and priced as a microtransaction.

Wii is finally crawling its way into dl monetization and that's a good thing for Miis everywhere. Well, in Japan, at least... ya know, for now. Whatever, shut up!

Fincher Going 'Heavy Metal' Onscreen

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, March 14, 2008 2:11 PM

David Fincher, he of Seven and Zodiac fame, will spearhead a new Heavy Metal film for Paramount, which will be composed of another set of animated vignettes in the hyper violent or mildly erotic vein. For those of you who have never seen the original film, which came out in 1981, it was a similar effort, which compiled some of the stories from the writers of Heavy Metal magazine.

This new film will have Fincher, along with friends Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Tim Miller, another vanguard filmmaker, producing and directing segments. We're not sure who else will be involved, but we're certainly hoping they are able to wrangle Sammy Hagar back into the mix for another soundtrack classic.

Israeli's Sue Government for a Laser

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, March 14, 2008 2:10 PM

A Slashdot reader sent them a tip saying that, "Residents of a southern Israeli town want a real-life laser cannon to protect them against Palestinian rocket attacks. And they're suing the national government, for failing to provide the ray gun defense."

This is unfortunate because Dr. Evil does not run the Israeli government.

The laser that they are requesting was scrapped because of the "toxic chemicals needed to generate [the laser's] megawatts of power."

Kind of suspicious, if you ask us. Something a robot would ask for...

Verizon Exploring Future of Peer-to-Peer

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, March 14, 2008 2:08 PM

Sure, peer-to-peer transfers like BitTorrent are alright, but they are kind of old and busted. Verizon sees the future with P4P. That's straight up double the peers.

P4P stands for "Proactive network Provider Participation for P2P," which is kind of a mouthful.

The new technology, which Verizon hopes to use for commercial distribution and not helping you download that bootleg of Rambo, relies on a new system that would choose peers based on their network conditions and not just availability.

The transfer would then prioritize connections to peers that have available bandwidth to spare.
