'Bioshock 2' Confirmed

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 3:29 PM

The sequel (or will it be a prequel??) to blockbuster game Bioshock has been confirmed today in Take-Two Interactive's financial filing released today.

No details about the title have been revealed, but it is being developed at 2K Marin studio and is slated for a release sometime between August 1 and October 31, 2009.

Here's what the official statement said:

"2K Games said today that BioShock 2, the sequel to the wholly owned and internally developed title, is being developed by 2K Marin and is planned for release in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. The critically acclaimed BioShock title has sold over 2 million units worldwide since its launch in August."

Spammers Double-Up on Gmail

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:52 PM

Looks like the automated CAPTCHA system (pictured above) for catching automated account creation bots isn't working as well as it should.

Hackers may have found a reliable way around Google's implementation and are using it to send out more and more spam.

Spam coming from Gmail addresses doubled last month from 1.3% of all spam to 2.6% of all spam.

That's not important, though. What is important is:

  • I wanted to see if I could get the other person into bed.
  • Order Royal repl1ca w4tches Online
  • Don't be loser change your ma|e organ size

Britney Gets Animated

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:20 PM

In lieu of troubled pop diva’s ability to get her act together to promote her last album by actually appearing in a music video in person, Jive Records will release a video without her!

Sorta…

The video for Britney’s latest single off Blackout, “Break The Ice,” will be an animated one, starring a cartoon Britney.

This is actually a fitting decision since Britney has essentially become a cartoon character, a parody of her former self, an animated 2-D characture, a…well, you get the analogy…

Our Favorite Videogame Hookers

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:12 PM

The recent allegations against New York governor Eliot Spitzer are funny and ironic--the guy had a huge problem with the fake hookers in Grand Theft Auto, but seemingly no problem with real hookers who charge $1000 an hour--but it also got us thinking about our favorite videogame prostitutes of all time. Mr. Spitzer would have done everyone a favor if he'd have stuck to the digital doxies detailed below:

Mass Effect – The Consort: In the Citadel, you encounter a Asari “consort” that offers guidance to Shepard and you can also boink off-screen. She makes you work for it though. You have to come back later and sweet talk her. This puts Mass Effects conversation system to good use and effectively teaches young kids how to talk a woman into bed. These skills are even put to the test later in the game when it comes time to have sex with Ashley or Liara. Make sure you level up your Sweet-Talkin’ skill. You’ll need it.
-bleahy

GTA III -- Nameless Prostitutes: Oh, the glory. The first moment I really felt free in a videogame. Not only was it hilarious to see the car bouncing rhythmically increasing in fervor to a fevered pitch, but everything surrounding the transaction from the pickup (she won't get in if you got a skuzzy ride) to the payment, to the fact that it increases your health, was all so genius. It created the perfect word-of-mouth buzz among friends and it's those kinds of add-ons that I love in games. That and the fact that you could get your money back immediately following the transaction with a few well-placed punches and stomps. So simple, so real, so just like every Thursday night.

Verizon Shooting for 100G Network in 2009

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:11 PM

The IEEE has settled on shooting for 100Gbps as the new ethernet standard and Verizon wants to roll out the infrastructure for 2009.

Expect the fancy 100Gbps internet to be delayed, expensive, and not available in all areas.

We do hope they get it going, though. We don't even have FiOS yet, but already it's too slow. We demand an immediate jump up to 100Gbps.

(Even though 100G might remind you of cellphone networks like 2.5G & 3G, this is referring to regular 'ol wired internets).

'Army of Two' Won't Play Across Regions

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 1:55 PM

According to Electronic Arts, Army of Two won't allow players in North America to team up with U.K or Asian gamers.

We wanted to get to the bottom of this issue, so we called Army of Two Senior Producer Reed Schneider.

"The game works on a deterministic or peer-to-peer network setting," Reed explained. "Because we have all these synchronized animations and the players are always doing things together, the only way to support that kind of model right now is to use a deterministic model for networking."

Google Buys DoubleClick After EU "OK"

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 1:52 PM

Google now owns DoubleClick and now owns even more of the online advertising market. Competing companies like Microsoft and Yahoo are worried that Google will be able to jack up their prices while maintaining their marketshare.

Maybe Microsoft and Yahoo should get some merging going and try to compete with Google. It's probably the only way they can even hope to put up a fight on the internets.

The buyout was okayed by the European Union, which is notoriously hateful of monopolies and antitrust issues. They found no issue with this purchase, but Google is currently being probed (lol) on privacy issues, which should be resolved by April.

At the end of the day, Google is going to advertise even more to you and you're going to deal with it.

Videogames As Talent Scouts?

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 12:06 PM

“The times they are a-changin’…” - Lil' Dylan

Remember back in the day when record labels hired A&R reps to go out and scout for new acts? Well, now instead of suit and tie talent scouts, the labels need not look further for new artists than videogames.

Yes, it’s becoming more and more common for artists to get famous after being featured on game soundtracks. For instance, Avril Lavigne was first introduced to European audiences through FIFA 2003. Fabolous was first introduced to America through NBA Live, while Jet got their American iPod commercial based on exposure in Madden 2004 and Incubus had three tracks in the Volume 1 album of Halo 2

'WiiWare' Coming To Japan 3/25

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 11:11 AM

WiiWare is coming to Japan on March 25th, and, ostensibly, here in the not-too-distant future. For the uneducated, WiiWare is an online service for the Wii that, unlike Virtual Console, offers newer games designed specifically for the Wii, mostly of the third party variety.

Initial offerings, at least in Japan, include Okiraku Ping-Pong Wii, a ping-pong game, and My Life As A King: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, from the good folks at Square Enix. We look forward to an American release date, and to finding out what other interesting games appear on the service.

iPhone SDK Has Some Limits

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 10:54 AM

Apple has put some limits on what coders can do with the iPhone SDK and on the surface it appears like a move to block competition.

Steve Jobs announced that Voice-over-IP would not be supported over EDGE and only function over Wi-Fi. We don't see this is as a blocking issue, but more of a move to prevent a slow application. We can't even imagine trying to do VoIP over the iPhone's last-gen data connection.

Java and a few other programming languages got blocked, but do we really need Java on the iPhone?

This isn't really an antitrust or net neutrality issue because the iPhone is Apple's product and is a closed platform. Critics who are arguing for an open one should ask themselves if Sony would let people run Xbox Live Arcade games on the PS3.

What do you think? Should Apple let people do whatever they want with the iPhone SDK?

Hulu Launches Wednesday

Posted by Ty Colfax - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 10:50 AM

Hulu is going live on Wednesday and TheFeed is very excited. We've been poking around in their Beta for a few months now, just watching Family Guy and Heroes episodes, as well as a ton of cheesy gameshows. There's lots of content from NBC, FOX, and other providers like your own G4 with more on the way. There's coverage from the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show for cryin out loud.

A supposed drawback is that you can't download anything, but those who know how to use bit torrents for private transfer of non-copyrighted material don't need this feature anyway.

Also, if you haven't seen the live action Tick shows, they're up there. Check them out tomorrow.

Console Wars Get Bloody

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 10:29 AM

We thought 2008 would be the year of the PlayStation 3, but yesterday's 360 price-cut heats up the console war to a roiling boil.

Analyst David Mercer from Strategy Analytics said, "Sony will be nervous that the PS3's recent sales surge may fizzle out now that the premium Xbox 360 undercuts the PS3 by GBP 40, and the cheapest Xbox model is almost half the price of the PS3... Sony will be scrutinizing the daily sales reports, but will probably try to hold out until later in the year before making its next price move."

So, price war, right? Consumers might end up being very, very happy.
