'Dexter' Videogame Coming
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 03, 2008 1:57 PM

Showtime has announces a multi-platform videogame version of the hit serial-killer oriented TV show Dexter. They'll be teaming with Mark Ecko, fashion designer, seemingly impressed with the runaway success of Mark Ecko's Getting Up.
"Dexter is the extremely rare TV show with enough layers of action and tension to translate perfectly into a compelling videogame," said Marc Fernandez, Vice President of Marc Ecko Entertainment. "Our game designers, writers, and artists are going to give Dexter's morally complex world the kind of interactivity that gamers will love."

The Most Famous Scream
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 03, 2008 1:52 PM
Have you heard the Wilhelm Scream? If you said "no," you're a liar without even knowing it. This most-famous-of-all sound effects has appeared in countless movies and TV shows since its debut in 1951, where it began as the scream of man being eaten by an alligator. It's in Cloverfield, Indiana Jones, and just about every iteration of Star Wars, including all the films, the holiday special and videogames.
Check this site for a complete scream filmography.

Wikileaks Back Online, Raises Questions
Posted by Brian Leahy - Monday, March 03, 2008 1:26 PM
Remember when Wikileaks was shut down for posting information about some shady bank practices in the Cayman Islands?
Well, they're back online and ready to serve up information, but some questions are being raised about freedom of speech on the web and what this all could mean moving forward.
The bank argued that the information that was posted contained information about account holders and private information that isn't "newsworthy", but Wikileaks contended, "that’s how you identify who’s been salting away money in accounts."
The judge eventually overruled the previous finding and even implied that once something is on the internet the courts are powerless to stop it.
Where do you stand on free speech on the internet? What if it was your bank account information (though you probably aren't doing anything illegal)?

Harmonix Gets Big 'Band' Bonus
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, March 03, 2008 12:18 PM
Harmonix did new parents MTV proud with Rock Band, and, therefore, will be paid accordingly. The success of the rhythm monster has activated a bonus for the company of over $208 million dollars, and they're not done yet. Seems MTV will pay another bonus for the game's performance this same time next year.
What does that mean to you and I? Well, aside from the kudos you might be wanting to give your old friends at Harmonix, it means that they're going to remain supremely motivated to provide decent content for at least another year, because the more money they make, the more money they make, ya heard? So, get ready for more Rock Band awesomeness in '08!

iPhone Running Torrents?
Posted by Brian Leahy - Monday, March 03, 2008 11:55 AM
If there's one feature that's missing from the iPhone, it's downloading torrents. Often we wonder how perfect this device would be if we could download movies legal Linux ISOs directly to our iPhones.
What? We can? How?
A hacker calling himself Core has rigged up a command line version of BitTorrent that runs on the iPhone. It only works on WiFi and will drain the battery extremely quickly.
Expect a GUI down the line, but usefulness might not increase.

'Dark Sector' PS3 Multiplayer Missing Features
Posted by Brian Leahy - Monday, March 03, 2008 11:42 AM
Dark Sector is looking swell. Any game with a boomerang like blade that can be set on fire is okay in our book. Some details have been released on the multiplayer aspect of the game and PS3 fans are going to be a bit disappointed.
Here is the section on PS3 vs. X360 (bolding is ours):
"Both systems will allow players to create, join, and search for multiplayer games. However, only the X360 gives players a Quick game option, a Custom game option, and a Ranked game option."
"The Quick game option will pick a game for the player based on their preference of Infection or Epidemic. The Custom game option allows players to set up their own games with the customizable settings of time limit, score limit, number of players, and the availability of bots."
"Ranked games are directly linked to the X360 Leaderboard. A player’s performance in a Ranked game will determine their position on the X360 Leaderboard. The PS3 allows players to search for or create multiplayer games."

2K Sports Partners with Pitchfork Media for MLB 2K8
Posted by Ty Colfax - Monday, March 03, 2008 11:35 AM

2K Sports, the sports publishing label of Take-Two Interactive, announced a partnership today with renowned and influential music outlet Pitchfork Media in support of Major League Baseball 2K8.
Apparently the Pitchfork people are huge fans of baseball and videogames, so this was a natural partnership. What this means for gamers is that the music selected for MLB 2K8 will be coming from a place that hopefully puts quality over name recognition, as Pitchfork is plugged into the indie scene. Below the cut you'll find the list of songs with Pitchfork selected tunes getting a PF.

'Last Starfighter' Sequel On The Way?
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, March 03, 2008 11:26 AM
You probably don't remember The Last Starfighter, but it was an awesomely cool sci-fi movie from the 80's about a kid recruited to save the universe by playing a videogame. Well, there are rumors of a sequel, tentatively titled Son of the Starfighter, and those rumors are gaining steam, with a production company putting the film on its slate, and a rumored appearance by Lance Guest, who played the teen in the first movie.
We could not be happier about this development. The first movie was a whole lot of fun, and, with the advances in technical film making prowess since the 80's, a sequel could be really cool. Obviously, we will have more news as it comes, but you should see the original. It's cheesy, but it's awesome.

Too bad. The fake screenshot is funny, though.

Nex-Gen Dr. Who Game Coming?
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 03, 2008 10:18 AM

While you can play a number of flash games at the BBC's website, and a game is apparently coming to PS2s from Top Trumps, English sci-fi hero Dr. Who has been ill-served by videogames, but that might change.
Developers Tom Heaton and Pete Hickman were asked what they though of a super immersive next-gen Dr. Who. The pair replied, "We are HUGE Doctor Who fans, so that would be something that we'd really like to see too. All I'm allowed to say is... watch this space."
We'd play a Dr. Who game only if we could play as Tom Baker Dr. Who, who is clearly superior to all others. It's the scarf, baby.

Rumor: 'Tron 3-D' in 2011
Posted by Ty Colfax - Monday, March 03, 2008 10:01 AM
It's just a rumor but you know that don't stop us. A Tron sequel is reportedly in the works for a Spring 2011 release and it will be in 3-D. It's going to be produced by Disney and directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has done many a fine commercial including ones for Gears of War and Halo 3. He only has one other credit from imdb for a 2010 release of a Logan's Run remake. So, while he's relatively unknown, they seemed to have picked someone who knows their sci-fi.
Disney is hoping to have a big, sequelriffic 2011 with Cars 2, Pirates of the Carribean 4, Tron 3-D, and perhaps the stupidest sequel of all time, National Treasure 3.

Namco Calls Up 'We Ski' For The Wii
Posted by Justin Fassino - Monday, March 03, 2008 9:55 AM

Clearly Namco has never read the Nintendo style guide. If they did, they would know that Nintendo is insistent upon using the word Wii correctly.
The guide reads, in part, "It is simply Wii, not Nintendo Wii... The name works best at the beginning of declarative statements." So why then does Namco declare an all-inclusive trip of winter fun without using Wii? It is a question that may never be answered.
Regardless of Wii or We, We Ski is the newest game from the publisher. It's got the Wiimote and nunchuk support for carving those nice lines in the powdery slopes. It's got Mii support, allowing you to get some air with your own customized avatar. And it's got four-player multiplayer so you can watch as your friends go flying through the fence during the downhill.
Most important, however, is the fact that We Ski will make use of the Wii balance board that comes with Wii Fit, making it one of the first third party games to use the peripheral. Namco promises a large, snowy mountain for players to explore, complete with different skiing disciplines like moguls and slalom.
The game will be out this Spring; just make sure you save some I's and call it by its correct title. Click the banner for more images.

UK Pol: 'Games Feature Rape'
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 03, 2008 9:42 AM
Keith Vaz, a British politician, cited evidence that videogames let players take part in all manner of violent things, including rape.
Vaz is helping a British law get passed that creates a body that can challenge the British videogame ratings board's decisions on games.
Here's what Zaz said: "[S]omeone sitting at a computer playing a video game, or someone with one of those small devices that young people have these days, the name of which I forget -- PlayStations or PSPs, something of that kind -- Well, whatever they are called, when people play these things, they can interact. They can shoot people; they can kill people...they can rape women."
In response to Vaz's comment about game that allowed rape, Edward Vaizey asked: "Is the honorable Gentleman aware of any video game that has as its intention the carrying out of rape or that allows the game player to carry out such an act? The BBFC and I are unaware of any such game."
Can you think of a game with a rating that features rape?

Blu-Ray Too Small For 'MGS4'
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 03, 2008 8:21 AM
According to Famitsu, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said the 50 Gig Blu-Ray discs that PS3 games are packed on are just too small to contain the genius of Metal Gear Solid 4.
Kojima said "There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress."
Other than the Japanese voice track, I wonder what we're missing.
