PlayStation Home Giving Good Game

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 5:02 PM

PlayStation Home is gearing up, and there's word of new portals that will enhance the PS3 experience for at least three of the games on the system, Resistance: Fall of Man, Warhawk, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Each will have bonus content that helps to round out the games. In the case of Resistance, it's bonus levels and looks behind-the-scenes, while Uncharted will feature a 2D side-scrolling mini-game in the style of Contra.

Finally, Warhawk will allow players to work their strategies for gameplay with a war room that allows you to place tiny tanks, planes, and men on a map before taking the practical route to playing the game. It's a nice innovation, to be sure, and improves gameplay by a good measure.

We'd heard for a while that Home was going to be different and interesting, and, though it's taken a while to get here, the early word on the street is pretty darn positive. Keep it up, Sony!

Disney Announces 'Ultimate Band'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 3:33 PM

Nintendo system owners who like collaborative music games get the shaft. Sure, you can enjoy Guitar Hero 3 on the Wii, but not Rock Band (yet.)

Luckily, Disney Interactive is filling the music game void for Wii owners with the release of Ultimate Band!

Disney says they're working with some of the "very biggest names in rock, alternative, popular, emo and indie rock music," to allow band mates to play sets from a broad selection of current hits and all-time rock favorites, and promises the oppurtunity to rock out on guitar, bass, drums or as the front man.

This game does not require extra peripherals, so we asked Disney about the "front man" part. According to their spokesperson, the game's front man/woman doesn't sing as much as pump up the crowd with dances, waves, and more. We hope Elvis style hip shakin' action and stage-dives off the Ottoman earn big points.

The game comes out during the 2008 holiday season for the DS and the Wii.

Here's a screen gallery.

Underwear Mayor Recalled

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 3:12 PM

The above babe used to be mayor of the tiny Oregon town of Arlington.

She posed in her underwear on a firetruck, threw the pics up on her myspace page, and the town recalled her mayorship.

We'd like to offer her a position as Mayor of The Internet.

'Justice League' Back On For 2009

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 1:48 PM

The Justice League film that's been in the works for the past year or so, but which had been squashed by the writers strike, is back on again. And it has the release date of Summer, 2009, so all of you fans of Adam Brody, who once played Seth Cohen on The O.C., should mark your calendars, as he will play The Flash in this one.

The script is being polished, and pre-production is already underway in Australia, so this movie is on the way, like it or not. Of course, we will have more news as it is warranted, but for right now, just know that there is Justice League coming to you in 2009.

Facebook Getting A Redesign

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 1:18 PM

Inspired by the simpler, cleaner look they adopted to adapt to iPhone, Facebook is redesigning the site for those of us who still visit it online. Though there are no live changes as yet, and they have yet to determine a date for them, the developers are working on putting together something a little more functional and a little less cluttered.

This is great, because we sometimes have a hard time finding the important things on Facebook, like movie quizzes and "Are YOU Interested?" This redesign seems like just the tonic the social networking world needs.

Wii Mod-Chippers Arrested in UK

Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 1:15 PM

Jolly ho, gentle chaps. G4tv.co.uk correspondant Malcom Ballyweather here to share with you a gripping tale of thievery, intrigue, and Nintendo Wii videogame consoles.

Two evil-doers at Robin Park Sports Centre in Wigan in Lancashire were operating a Wii modding service and selling pre-modded consoles, but the Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) task force was on hand and them them arrested.

The two "chippers" will no longer be selling illegal and counterfeit Wii's and games and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Queen's law.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm late for a cricket match with my Thomas Cartwright, III.

Utah Wants Porn-Free ISPs

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 11:50 AM

The state of Utah is tossing around the idea of passing a bill that would grant the internet equivalent of a 'G' rating to sites that would contractually obligate themselves to block pornography. "HB 407, introduced by Rep. Michael Morley (R), would designate some ISPs as "Community Conscious Internet Providers" if they meet certain criteria. In order to be certified as a CCIP by the Attorney General's office, an ISP would prohibit its customers by contract from posting pornography or other material that's harmful to minors. Customers of the G-rated ISP would also be prevented from reaching what the bill refers to as "prohibited material."

The problem is that, as a part of this, the ISPs would be able to keep the IP addresses of their users for up to two years from when they were first obtained, which means, essentially, that Utah is watching what the people of their state are doing online, and they don't like it.

Study Says "Dying In Videogames Brings Relief"

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 11:37 AM

In a recent paper published in Emotion magazine, 32 Norwegian college students were asked to participate in a study to measure the emotional reaction of playing violent video games.

The study found that in the game James Bond 007: Nightfire, players tended to experience negative emotions (fear, anger, anxiety, etc.) when wounding or killing an opponent. However, dying in the game seemed to elicit positive emotions of relief.

The paper differed from previous studies performed on videogame players as it didn't try to draw definitive conclusions on their findings. The address the notion that there could be several reasons for these reactions, but the observations are interesting nonetheless.

What do you guys think? Do you get a bigger high out of killing or being killed in your FPS of choice?

CDs Down, Downloads Up

Posted by Ty Colfax - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 11:37 AM

Nearly half of all teenagers did not buy one CD in 2007, up from 38% in 2006 and just this week, iTunes surpassed Best Buy as the number 2 retailer of music to sit behind Wal-Mart. The numbers also show that illegal downloading is down and legal music purchasing online is up 45%.

People, mainly teenagers, are buying or illegally sharing online because of the convenience it affords. You can browse, purchase and listen to a song you like all in about two minutes on a computer, and it'll be cheaper. Buying a CD, or heaven forbid a vinyl record, means getting to the store, paying more, and then all the annoying packaging and set up in the device that plays it. So, it appears as though the future of tangible music sales is doomed. The only hope for collectors and listeners who prefer the old world paradigm, is that the market can split evenly and record companies will be forced to appeal to both online and in-store purchasers. If the trend toward digital downloads continues to grow, everyone will be forced to adopt new music habits, some of which are near and dear to collector-types.

'Homie Rollerz' For The Nintendo DS

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 11:33 AM

Homie Rollerz is coming to the Nintendo DS, a racing game in which you will be able to play a wide variety of 'homies,' and trick out their rides while racing with friends and neighbors. There is also mayhem promised, which is good when you're talking videogaming.

Without question, however, the most interesting thing about Homie Rollerz is the following: "Play as one of 10 slick Homies and enter the "Wizard Circuit," a mysterious racing series through which the winner is granted a single wish by the wise and legendary Homie known as Wizard."

Mayhem and fantastical wizardry? Where do we sign up?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 11:32 AM

'Turning Point: Fall of Liberty' is Headed to Stores

Posted by Ty Colfax - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 10:53 AM

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty
is shipping to stores today and that means it will soon be time for everyone to engage in their favorite alternate reality shooter where the Nazis take Manhattan, which we're sure is not as much fun as Muppets Take Manhattan. But it looks pretty sweet from the trailer and it appears to feature that Nazi jet fighter that they never got to use.

If you've somehow missed the coverage G4 has given this mulit-platform beast of a game, watch the X-Play On Location video below and go to the Turning Point web site.

Sony Announces Profile 2 Blu-Ray Players

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 10:51 AM

Sony has just announced their first line of Profile 2 Blu-Ray players, the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550. The Profile 2 players will be the first stand alone Blu-Ray players by Sony to feature web coonectivity and compatibility with external storage devices.

These features are already present in Sony's Playstation 3 models, but were until now unavailable in a stand alone Blu-Ray player. The S350 is scheduled for release in the summer while the S550 will not be out until this fall. IGN notes an interesting tidbit: The features recently adopted by Sony for their stand alone Blu-Ray players were present in most HD-DVD players at launch. We're not trying to make a statement. Just sayin'.

The S350 is expected to retail for around $400 while the S550 will come in around $500.

Buy Gas with Your Finger

Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 10:41 AM

At 10 Shell gas stations around the country, customers can pay by touch using their fingerprints, which is digit-tally (LOL) linked to a credit card.

Now, someone will have to steal your finger to steal your identity. Or, you know, just hack into the computer storing your information, but that's neither here nor there.

Does this mark a new beginning in payment options? Will we all be paying by fingerprints in a few years? We doubt it. Mobil already has SpeedPass, which just requires you to wave a key fob near a sensor, but that isn't easy enough for Shell, apparently.

In this war for the most convenient way to buy overpriced gas, who will be the victor? We want to pay for gas just by thinking about it. Make that happen, science!

'Resident Evil Zero' For Wii?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 10:23 AM

Word from the latest issue of Japanese gaming bible Famitsu magazine is that Capcom might be bringing an updated version of Resident Evil Zero to the Wii.

Its called Biohazard 0 in Japan and will be released this Summer. No information was given for a release in North America or Europe.

The game will be pretty much the same as the GameCube version, will probably feature a few scenes that take advantage of the Wiimote-- like the Wii version of Resident Evil 4.
