'Dead Head Fred' Wins WGA Award

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Friday, February 15, 2008 1:36 PM

You know, writers really get our goat lately. First they go on strike for four months and cost us $2 billion, and then they vote Dead Head Fred the most well-written game of the year.

Has anyone played Dead Head Fred? The most we can muster in our mind when we think about it is that terrible movie that wasted the talents of The Young Ones' incredibly funny Rik Mayall (not a midget...sorry.) which is actually called Drop Dead Fred, but who cares?

Also, did any writers play BioShock this year? Have you ever played a game like that before, where the writing is so good that the plot literally made you gasp? Feh. What do we need writers for anyway? The truth of the matter is that there was a baroque set of rules that governed the nomination process, which eliminated a lot of material that might have triumphed over Fred.

The MMO Report: Friday, February 15th

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, February 15, 2008 11:44 AM

This week we saw the celebration of all things consumer based: Valentine's Day.

While I'm sure most of you did not drop large amounts of cash on chocolate, jewelry, and flowers, we're here to tell you where your money SHOULD be spent; monthly subscription fees for online video games. I think we all know the only love we really need comes from our fellow Guild Members and especially friendly NPCs, so allow us to be your shepherd through the field of massively multiplayer online lovin'.

Also, did anyone else watch that Saint Valentine's Day Massacre special on the History Channel last night? Brutal!

So snuggle up with someone special (your computer), bring down the lights (your monitor), and take the phone (your headset) off the hook, it's time to get down to business. This is...

The MMO Report.

Rumor: Toshiba to Drop HD-DVD?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, February 15, 2008 11:36 AM

Think of this what you will, but we'll file it in the "believable" bin for now. The Hollywood Reporting is saying that Toshiba could be making a move to drop HD-DVD "in the coming weeks."

This would be the official death of the format as it is Toshiba's own format.

Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for Toshiba said, "given the market developments in the past month, Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of its recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."

Ouch.

Red Ring Rate at 16%?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, February 15, 2008 11:05 AM

SquareTrade, a company that sells warranties for consoles has sampled 1000 of their policy holders and come up with a 16% failure rate for the Xbox 360.

They also found the rate for the Wii and PS3 to be a low 3%.

Some of us have been lucky to avoid the RRoD so far, but others here at G4tv.com are on their 2nd or 3rd console already. It's a sad state of affairs.

Global WoW Tourney Announced

Posted by Ty Colfax - Friday, February 15, 2008 10:52 AM

Blizzard Entertainment recently announced plans for a worldwide tourney incorporating the World of Warcraft Arena System. Players will be able to instantly create level-70 characters with epic equipment, placing the focus on tactics and execution, and removing the grind aspect. The tourneys will start in April and have an entrance fee of $20 US running for 6 weeks.

And just like Hoop It Up, it'll be a 3-on-3 tourney where teams compete for real-world cash in opening rounds in their region. Unlike Hoop It Up, the top teams in each region will be invited to the global grand tournament where they will compete for a top prize of $75,000. And there'll be orcs and tauren and stuff.

And this should help you vanquish your foes:

Youth Corrupted With 'Wrong Turn 2'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, February 15, 2008 10:49 AM

G4TV.com's own head of production, super-director Joe Lynch, is in the news.

According to Australia's Daily Telegraph, a recreation officer at a group home for underage sex offenders treated his/her charges to a showing of a "gruesome and explicit B-grade horror flick" featuring murder, mutants and general horror awesomness. The film in question:  Wrong Turn 2, directed by Joe Lynch.

Former Children's Court magistrate Barbara Holborow said the officer responsible should be fired.  "Where do they get these people from? When you put a child into a detention centre it's not just to punish them, it's to rehabilitate and educate them," Ms Holborow said. "How can you rehabilitate kids if you're going to show them filth like that?"

Lynch said, "Although the unfortunate individuals involved have impeccable taste in horror films, this movie was never intended to be shown in ANY correctional facility to emotionally fragile minds."

"Please be warned, Wrong Turn 2  could influence one to engage in uncontrollable fits of cannibalism or mutant diddling and is not meant to be viewed by the easily impressionable...or served with vegemite," Lynch added.

Epic to Focus on Consoles, Not PC

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, February 15, 2008 10:38 AM

CliffyB just backhanded the mistress that made him famous: PC gaming. Seems like someone is a little hurt that Unreal Tournament III didn't sell so much on the PC.

Mr. B dropped this quote in an interview with MTV:

"I think people would rather make a game that sells 4.5 million copies than a million and “Gears” is at 4.5 million right now on the 360. I think the PC is just in disarray… what’s driving the PC right now is ‘Sims’-type games and ‘WoW‘ and a lot of stuff that’s in a web-based interface. You just click on it and play it. That’s the direction PC is evolving into So for me, the PC is kind of the secondary part of what we’re doing. It’s important for us, but right now making AAA games on consoles is where we’re at."

If Cliffy right? Is PC gaming truly dead? Other games seem to be selling just fine on the PC.

Thompson Blames Shooting On Games

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, February 15, 2008 9:18 AM

According to Kotaku, game hating attorney Jack Thompson appeared on Fox News this morning to blame yesterday's shooting deaths of six students at Northern Illinois University on violent videogames.

Nevermind that the media only found out the shooters' name this morning, and the slowly-emerging details of his life (serious academic, sociology student with no criminal record) don't jibe with the "traditional" media-crazed gunman stereotype, Thompson has apparently already decided the killer is a gamer and his hobby caused the rampage.

We're not sure what exactly was said on-air, but, if it went down as you'd imagine it, the damage to the reputation of gamers is only a small consideration compared to the immense disrespect done to the victims families when news outlets let Thompson use death as a means of making cheap (and very, very stupid) political points.

So seriously, news media, when Thompson sees some bloody, violent tragedy and gives you a call, maybe you should just hang up, okay?

'Virtua Fighter 5 R' Announced

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, February 15, 2008 9:06 AM

Sega's booth at the AOU Amusement Machine Expo was the launchpad for a new entry in the Virtua Fighter 5 series.

The company showed the first footage of the Virtua Fighter 5 R, but didn't provide any have any solid details on the game.

According to IGN:

VF5R is described by Sega as a new "series" within the VF5 series. This, and the new characters, suggests that it will be much more than just one of the "version" updates of which the series has already seen four (D being the latest).

Mysterious!

Plus, Guitar Hero 3 owners will get a present: Dream On will be available for free download for free between February 16-18 for both the PS3 and the 360. Sorry, Wii.

'COD 4' Rules Software Sales

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, February 15, 2008 7:34 AM

The top-selling videogame in January was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The shooting and/or bloowing-things-up simulator best all comers to sell 331,000 games.

Second was Wii Play with Wii Remote, which is pretty surprising, given the age (and relative meh-ness) of the title. Wii Play outsold Rock Band and Super Mario Galaxy. WHo would have guessed?

Click the cut for the whole top ten list.
