Heat Beam Unleashed In 2010

Posted by Josh Lawson - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 3:42 PM

It may not be sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads, but the U.S. Defense Department feels they have the next best thing....heat beams.

Unveiling a revolutionary heat-beaming weapon called Active Denial System, the new non-lethal system "causes an intense burning sensation," which in turn causes "people to run for cover." Mounted on a Humvee, the ADS is a large recatangular dish antenna that directs an invisible beam towards its target. Powered using high-voltage, the effective range is more than 500 meters.

Ideally meant for crowd control, mob dispersal, checkpoint security and port protection, the ADS took a total of twelve years to develop with the last five years in advanced development stages.

Brandy's Crash & Burn

Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 3:16 PM

R&B star Brandy was involved in a car crash last month, and TMZ is reporting that it might have been her fault.

Damn.

In an conversation with the man driving directly behind Brandy at the time of the crash, TMZ learned that the singer "repeatedly blamed herself at the scene of the accident."

Opps.

The accident accurred at 10:30 a.m. on December 30 on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles. She driving her 2007 Land Rover at 65 mph and did not notice that cars in front of her had slowed considerably, authorities say. Her vehicle reportedly hit a 2005 Toyota, which then hit a 1989 Toyota. The 2005 Toyota then slid sideways and hit the center divider. As the 2005 Toyota came to a halt, it was struck by a 1988 Acura. Brandy was not injured. The driver of the Acura suffered moderate injuries.

Bungie: We Messed Up 'Halo 2'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 2:33 PM

Remember how everyone was sort of let-down by Halo 2? Sure, it's a good game, but not a great game. Well, it turns out the game's developer, Bungie, was also disappointed.

According to UK Magazine Edge, Bungie's Chris Butcher said:

"One of the things that stuns me when I think about it, and I can’t believe this is true – we had none of that for Halo 2. Take that polish period and completely get rid of it. We miscalculated, we screwed up, we came down to the wire and we just lost all of that. So Halo 2 is far less than it could and should be in many ways because of that. It kills me to think of it. Even the multiplayer experience for Halo 2 is a pale shadow of what it could and should have been if we had gotten the timing of our schedule right. It’s astounding to me. I f**king cannot play Halo 2 multiplayer. I cannot do it. And that’s why I know Halo 3 is going to be so much better.”

M'Soft Tries To Game Wikipedia

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 1:42 PM

Shame on you, Microsoft. First, you release the Zume with horrible DRM standard, then, CNN catches you paying bloggers to change Wikipedia entries. Shame!

The story itself, that Microsoft offered to pay a technical blogger to correct what they saw as errors in the Wiki entry for open source software, is as dry and technical as your mom (That's a DISS! You got BURNED!), but the fact that Microsoft cares enough about what Wikipedia says to expose themselves to the entire web's scorn is funny. At least to me.

And hey, it's a bash-corporations story that is not about Sony. That's worth something, right?

Wu-Tang Maps Out Diagrams

Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 1:38 PM

Wu-Tang Clan's new album will be called 8 Diagrams, presumably referring to the eight living original members (they are minus one since ODB passed away). The title is a reference to a Kung-Fu flick (big surprise).

The reunion effort --  their first in six years -- is the group’s first since signing with with Loud Records founder Steve Rifkind’s new SRC label through Universal Records.

Thankfully, the album will feature an unreleased Ol’ Dirty Bastard rap. Dirty is memorialized on the song “Life Changes."

“This is the perfect time for us to come back, the stars are aligned,” Wu leader RZA said. “It’s like when we first started with Steve. We put out real hip-hop at a time when it was turning into pop or R&B. We brought the focus back to the music in its rawest form, without studio polish or radio hooks.”

No radio hooks. That always bodes well for a successful album…

Grammer Reports Action News

Posted by Eugene Morton - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 12:48 PM

Kelsey Grammer, X-Men 3’s Beast (who also did some show called Frasier, I think, but don’t quote me on that) and Everybody Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton are in talks with 20th Century Fox TV to take leading roles in the pilot for a new comedy series, Action News.

The duo will play a pair news anchors who reunite at a local television station and I’m guessing, bring the funny. That was just a guess, so you can’t hold me to it.

Perhaps the funny will be brought by one of their as yet, unnamed co-stars or by the show’s writers Christopher Lloyd (from Frasier) and Steven Levitan (creator of Just Shoot Me). I don’t know. All I know is, it will definitely be brought by someone.

Pope Slaps Games

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:56 AM

Pope Benedict XVI hates violent, sexual videogames.

"Any trend to produce programs and products - including animated movies and video games - which in the name of entertainment exalt violence and portray anti-social behaviour or the trivilization of human sexuality is a perversion, all the more repulsive  when these programs are directed at children and adolescents," The Pontiff said in a message to mark the church's World Communications Day

"I appeal to the leaders of the media industry to educated and encourage producers to safeguard the common good, to uphold the truth, to protect individual human dignity and promote respect for the needs of the family."

Benedict also suggested that children should be encouraged to enjoy classic literature, fine arts and "uplifting music".

Sony Fixes PS3 Compatibility

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:42 AM

Good news for PlayStation 3 owners: Sony's latest software update, released this morning, will fix PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility issues.

While many PS2 games originally looked like ass (or at least had assy elements) on the PS3, now they look as good as PS2 games can be expected to look, bringing to fruition a very cool feature of the next-gen system. After all, who wants to throw away a perfectly good copy of Resident Evil 4?

According to ArsTechnical, the update also makes the PS3 "more responsive."

Kidnapper Likes 'Final Fantasy'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:32 AM

Scary pizza-shop employee/accused-kidnapper Michael Devlin (He's the guy who's said to have kidnapped 11-year old Shawn Hornbeck and held him for 4 years) has something in common with you. Know what it is? He's a gamer.

What game does a spooky accused kidnapper enjoy most? Contrary to the hopes of anti-game activists, Devlin wasn't into hyper-violent Grand Theft Auto style games. He said he's more into RPGs. Devlin told reporters his favorite title is "Final Fantasy."

he also enjoys hunting, fishing, politics and playing poker, but somehow I don't think those will be mentioned as causes of his supposed crime.

When asked what he'd be doing if he wasn't in the jug, Devlin replied:  "I'd be in front of my computer screen playing Final Fantasy XI."

"I like 'Final Fantasy' because it has a network that can connect to people all over the world, from Europe to Japan," he added.

On behalf of all gamers, I'd like to say, "Suck it, Devlin. We don't like your kind giving us a bad name.".

The Day Disco Died

Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:27 AM

DJ/producer Disco D (real name Dave Shaymen) committed suicide yesterday at age 26.

The St. Louis native came up in Ann Arbor, MI, and is considered a pioneer in ghetto-tech, “a raw fusion of electronic booty music that emanated from Detroit in the late ‘90s.”

After releasing several acclaimed indie albums in the ‘90s, Shaymen worked on Nina Sky’s debut album, collaborated on dancehall remixes of Christina Milian’s “Whatever U Want” (peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart) and Pharrell’s #1 single “Frontin,” and produced 50 Cent’s hit “Ski Mask Way” from the Grammy-nominated album The Massacre.

Recent work included records with Trick Daddy (“I Pop”) and Lil’ Scrappy (“Right Away”), and remixes for Shiny Toy Guns (“Le Disko”) and Crime Mob (“Rock Yo Hips”). Plus, he just launched a Brazilian urban label and a bilingual Brazilian hip hop group.

Robbie Williams To Play Alkie

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:21 AM

You might not know who he is, but Robbie Williams is very popular in England. And now, he's going to be playing a man who once drank himself almost all the way to death, only to become one of the greatest philanthropists on Earth. The film is called Through A Glass Brightly.

In other news, Robbie Williams is one of the great entertainers on the planet, so, if you haven't listened to him, you probably should.
