'Cloverfield' Does Monster Box Office

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 4:28 PM

We should have seen it coming. Cloverfield seized the box office over the weekend like a steel-jawed titan, and refused to let go, shaking down over $41 million at the theater, and murderizing the competition. The film had been tracking pretty high, but no one anticipated such a huge take, and this film is definitely on the way to being a real monster...get it? Monster? Because the movie has a...never mind.

Also impressive in a different way was 27 Dresses, otherwise known as "the female alternative to Cloverfield," which drew $22 million, and cemented star Katherine Heigl's (Knocked Up) status as a real player who can draw people to the movies. What this also means is that Grey's Anatomy is on borrowed time, as she's most likely out of there ASAP.

Coachella '08 Lineup Announced

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 3:12 PM

The lineup for this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has been announced, and it has some surprises on it. First, the opening day will be headlined by surf guitarist and Curious George fan Jack Johnson. Saturday will feature the return of mid-90's dance act Portishead, and closing things out on Sunday night will be Roger Waters, performing the whole of Dark Side of the Moon in concert.

Now, those things are cool, but the acts that were rumored leading up to the festival are nowhere to be found. Where's My Bloody Valentine? David Bowie? Radiohead? What you can honestly say, looking at the whole list, is that the lineup is far less impressive than in years past. Who knows, maybe they had a hard time signing acts?

Actor Heath Ledger Found Dead

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 1:52 PM

Heath Ledger, who will play The Joker in The Dark Knight this summer, has been found dead in his Manhattan apartment, just an hour ago. At this time, there is no word on the cause of death, and, though rumors abound, there has been no official word on what it might have been.

Though there is also no word on how this might effect the production of the film, principal photography on The Dark Knight is said to be done, so the film might not be affected. Ledger leaves behind a child, with his ex-wife Michelle Williams, a co-star from Brokeback Mountain.

Truth Behind RROD?

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 12:34 PM

Hey, buddy, do you own a 360? Have you exprienced the dreaded Red Ring of Death? Want to know what causes it? Well, it turns out it could be one of about 40 million different things.

8bitjoystick.com seems to have interviewed an ex-insider from Microsoft who claims the Red Ring of Death could be caused by any number of reasons, most of which would have been caught and corrected if not for the rush to production the system went through when it initially launched. He goes on to say that the failure rate of 360's from launch is somewhere around 30%.

Of course, Microsoft has not released any such numbers on failure rate or on the exact cause of the RROD. What do you guys think? You think this is true or do you think the guy is bunk?

Warcraft Exceeds10 Million Subscribers

Posted by Eugene Morton - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 12:21 PM

Blizzard recently went public with the news that the number of World of Warcraft subscribers has exceeded ten million. Relatively speaking, that’s only slightly less than the population of Missouri and Maryland combined.

If all the WoW players gathered in one place they could secede from the Union. More than likely though, they’ll just eat salty, cheese based snacks and drink Mountain Dew. Still, Cheers for Blizzard!

Known as “Final Boss of Nerdcore Hip Hop,” MC Frontalot has been treating hip hop fans and nerds around the globe to his unique brand of rap music.

“What the hell is ‘Nerdcore’,” you ask?

Well, think Kool Keith…if he was white…and rapped about videogames, RPGs, binary code, computers and other stuff that appeals to the G4tv audience.

You may also know him from his appearance in the documentary Nerdcore Rising: The Movie, his annual performances at webcomic Penny Arcade's annual Expo, his influential debut CD Nerdcore Rising, or from his cameos in The Walking Dead comics (illustrator Tony Moore is a big fan). He also has a brand new album out, Secrets from the Future, that is getting rave reviews.

Sierra Club Wants To Heavily Tax Games

Posted by Eugene Morton - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 11:55 AM

As if you didn’t already have enough people trying to force their agenda down your throat, now the Sierra Club wants to asphyxiate you with their unique brand of nonsense. The eco-friendly group is suggesting a new tax on the sale of all videogames and television sets as part of its "No Child Left Inside" initiative. They’re trying to combat the rise in childhood obesity and ADD, which is good, but they don’t stand a chance.

When it comes down to it, videogames have the ability to make players feel like they’ve accomplished something great and what child wants to let that go? Furthermore, nobody ever achieved anything good by going outdoors… or at least none we know on Xbox Live has.

Oscar Nominations Announced

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 11:53 AM

The 80th Annual Academy Awards nominees were announced this morning, and, to absolutely no one's surprise, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood were the leaders, with eight nominations each. There are some surprises, though. Juno was nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, in what we like to call the "Little Miss Sunshine Memorial This Film Doesn't Have A Chance In Hell To Win Best Picture Award, But Old People Like Movies That Don't Contain Violence Or Politics And Are Using This As A Platform To Make That Point Nominee"

Also kind of surprising is the lack of cultural diversity in this year's nominees. Not that it's necessary, but it's been very du rigeur over the past couple of years to make the nominations as diverse as possible. Just worth noting. We're not sure yet whether or not the Oscars will be worth watching, or if they will be like the Golden Globes were a couple of weeks ago, but there will still be awards, and that's something.

'Guitar Hero' Tops $1 Billion Mark

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 11:43 AM

Activision announced that Guitar Hero, as a franchise, has hit the billion-dollar mark in North America faster than any other franchise in the history of gaming, making it in a svelte 26 months since its inception. In addition, they announced that Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock was the highest-selling title of 2007, in both units sold and dollars made.

What does it all mean? Well, first of all, it means that the Guitar Hero franchise has changed the face of gaming over the past two years, and it just keeps raking in the cash. It means that the good people at Harmonix, between GH and Rock Band, are going to be set for life, and it means that Activision is likely as happy as they've been at any time since Pitfall first rocked the world.

'COD4' Outstrips 'Halo 3' On XBL

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 11:17 AM

According to XBox Live's Major Nelson, Call of Duty 4 is the hottest online title, breaking the stranglehold that Halo 3 has had on the spot since...well, since the moment it came out. That's kind of impressive for CoD 4, but even more so, is a bit troubling for Halo 3, which has lost a ton of momentum over the past couple of months.

Of course, this could just be the fact that Halo 3 has been out a while, and people are finally starting to tire of it. Or, it could be an anomaly, and the positions could be reversed next week. Still, it's certainly interesting news, especially since there are those in the industry that thought that Halo 3 would hold that top spot for months and months.

PlayStation 3, Now In White?

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 10:36 AM

The ceramic white PS3 that has been available in Japan since November is finally coming to the United States, or so we can conclude as a result of the fact that Sony has filed paperwork with the FCC for the unit, which also comes with a white DualShock controller. There's no word on when the console will be coming out.

Typical. A black unit comes along as the vanguard of a new era in the industry, and then the powers-that-be figure that the only thing that can communicate that message to the masses is a white unit. We'll take ours in the original black, please.

Wise-Cracking Robots To DS

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 10:24 AM

Vogster Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing their new game, Robocalypse! to the Nintendo DS in the near future. Said to be a game that involves some irreverent, wise-cracking robots on a mission, as part of an RTS. Now, the press release for this game used the words "wise-cracking," "uproarious," and "madcap." So you know it's going to be fun!

Also, the game is written by one of the directors and writers of SpongeBob SquarePants, so there's a comedy pedigree involved. And who doesn't really, really love funny robots? If Robin Williams proved one thing with Robots, it's that those ol' buckets o' bolts are pretty freakin' hilarious!

EA Announces 'Battlefield Heroes' is Free

Posted by Justin Fassino - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 9:40 AM

Electronic Arts is ready to bring their multiplayer war series to a wider audience. The company today announced that the upcoming cartoon-inspired Battlefield Heroes will be free to both download and play online.

The game, developed by Swedish Battlefield stalwarts DICE, will focus more on light-hearted fun a la Team Fortress 2 rather than the gritty FPS stylings of the rest of the series.

For more information on the game, including some of the new features and customization options, check out tonight's Gaming Update on X-Play.

After much ho-humming and land-lubbering, Pirates of the Burning Sea finally launches today. Sony Online Entertainment is finally releasing the first of a handful of pirate-themed MMOs, and for just under 50 dollars for the game and 15 bucks a month in subscription fees, you too can pillage the open ocean until your heart's content.

Players start by joining the French, Spanish, English or Pirate nations as a naval office, freetrader, privateer, or pirate. From there the Caribbean is yours; engage in ship to ship naval battles, swashbuckle in group sword fighting, salvage a ghost ship, or cleanse an island of a zombie infection. You know, the usual weekend activities.

PS3 May Get Another Price Cut

Posted by Eugene Morton - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 9:33 AM

If SlickDeals is to be believed, you Playstation 3 holdouts may soon have a pretty compelling reason to pick up the SIXAXIS. According to the site, which accurately predicted price cuts for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 last year, the Playstation 3 is due for another price reduction on January 29th and will retail for the new price of $299.

Adding credibility to the rumor is Sony’s recent announcement that it managed to cut the production cost of the PS3 in half. Though none of this has been confirmed by Sony yet, we won’t have to wait long to find out if the rumors are true. Put on your snorkel, because the tide of the next-gen console war could turn as early as Monday.

Also, to be available in white...

Konami Confirms 'Silent Hill Origins' for the PS2

Posted by Justin Fassino - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 9:19 AM

Konami silenced the speculation today as they finally announced what you and I already knew: Silent Hill Origins is being ported to the PlayStation 2.

Originally released ont he PSP in November of last year, the Climax-developed prequel to the original Silent Hill follows trucker Travis Grady as he finds himself venturing into the dark depths of the haunted town. New to the installment was the ability to use a variety of environmental objects as weapons, from televisions to IV drip stands.

No word yet on a release date but we'll update you just as soon as we get the information.
