'Goldeneye' Coming To Xbox Live?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 3:31 PM

In a rumor amazing enough that we must repeat it in spite of not knowing if it's true or not, Xbox Evolved is reporting that Goldeneye 007 may soon be available on Xbox Live Arcade.

Yes. We know you've heard that before, but this time it's attributed to "very reliable sources."

That has to count for something, right? Look, we just really, really want this to be true. Don't shoot down our dreams.

The game that everyone loved will feature updated graphics and Xbox Live multiplayer.

Report: Paramount Going Blu-ray

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 3:19 PM

In a shot that might just decide the format wars once and for all, the Financial Times is reporting that Paramount pictures is "poised to reveal" it will be releasing its films only on Blu Ray.

"But TheFeed...I thought Paramount made a $150 Million HD DVD deal!"

They did... but apparently, the company had a clause that allowed them to back out of the deal if Warner Brothers wouldn't back the new format. That happened Friday.

Blu-ray is currently backed by 20th Century Fox, MGM, Walt Disney, and most recently Warner Bros.; if Paramount jumps ship, Universal will be left as the biggest HD DVD backer.

There's controversy of course. Bloomberg's is reporting that Paramount told them that "Paramount's current plan is to continue supporting the HD-DVD format."

CES 2008: Wii-Like Controls Coming To PC

Posted by Eugene Morton - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 3:04 PM

The people at 3DV are bringing the Wii mechanic to the PC with the ZCam. Working in concert, the ZCam and accompanying software give PC owners the ability to use their hands to manipulate objects on their desktops at a frame rate of up to 60 fps.

That's great, because you’d better believe you’ll be able to play games with it! The simple, yet evocative USB device will hit store shelves some time before Saint Nick has to load up his sleigh and harness his magical reindeer.

CES 2008: PSP Gets Awesomer

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 2:58 PM

Hey, the PSP is coming out with a keyboard, and a camera, making the PSP an even cooler piece of pocket tech.

Sony Computer Entertainment America reps confirmed to GameSpot that both peripherals will be available in North America by the end of the year. No specific time frame was given, but we're hoping sooner rather than later.

U.K. To Legalize CD Rips?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 2:15 PM

'Ello 'Ello, whuts all this then?

Pip, pip, England. Jolly good show and all that stereotypical Brit-speak: The United Kingdom may soon allow you to do what you want to your music.

The U.K. currently does not allow CD rips, but a recommendation from Lord Triesman, Minister for Intellectual Property, may change that by allowing format-shifting for personal or private use.

The next step toward the idea becoming a law: Triesman will seeks comments from the public and from corporate stakeholders on the idea, run it up the flagpole and see who say "huzzah!"

Hopefully the Queen will say "Rath-ER!" at some point in the debate.

CES 2008: Rock Out With Air Guitar

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 1:28 PM

The Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker is a Guitar Hero-branded toy that debuted at CES.

According to the company that makes the thing, it "features patented technology which includes guitar pics and a rockin' belt buckle."

Because we could not understand how it works from the company's description, we searched for a youtube video. It's from gearlog.com.

So, what do you think? Cool or lame? Worth $29.99?

Mozilla Gets New CEO

Posted by Ty Colfax - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 1:00 PM

The CEO position at Mozilla is changing hands. Mitchell Baker, who helped gain a 15% market share of the browser biz with Firefox is stepping into a more chill role. She’ll still be on the board as its chairman (chairperson?) and wants to stay active in the programs that have made the company such a success.

Stepping into her shoes, although hopefully not literally, is John Lilly, the companies current Chief Operating Officer. His first task will be to push Firefox 3.0 into the world in an effort to get even more Explorer users to switch over. It's in heavy testing right now and all through the Summer, hoping for a November, 2008 release.

CES 2008: Google TV Rumblings

Posted by Ty Colfax - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 12:40 PM

Matsushita, the world’s top plasma TV maker, has partnered with Google to deliver HD web content to the living room. A Panasonic unit built by Matsushita will be launched sometime in the Spring and will allow users to browse and access YouTube and Picasa.

Uh… we hope there’s more to it than that. YouTube on an HD display? We shudder to think about how awful the already awful looks on a giant HD screen, but it’s a step in the right direction of web on tvs and tv on webs, otherwise known as one integrated system of hardware and webware.

CES 2008: Yahoo Opens Up to the Mobiles

Posted by Ty Colfax - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 12:17 PM

Yahoo is opening it up for companies to create widgets for mobile users to access from anywhere. The general idea is to open it up rather than close off access to certain handsets and web companies. Already plugged in are MySpace, MTV, and eBay.

"Our job is to make sure Yahoo Mobile Widgets run on any platform that creates a good user experience," said Marco Boerries, Yahoo’s mobile chief. At a CES press conference someone asked Boerries whether Yahoo plans to strike deals with seemingly competitive content providers, namely Facebook which could pose a conflict of interest with their MySpace deal. He declined to comment, saying "I am not prepared to make any other announcement today but we are talking to a bunch of providers."

So this is good news. Even if you’re not a Yahead, it takes us further down the path to open web access on our phones, which can only be good for everyone, provided it's true.

Freestyle 101: Planet Asia

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 12:00 PM

Watch the large version of this video

Cali underground vet Planet Asia has been making a name for himself for a decade or so in the hip hop game and with the release of his latest effort, The Jewelry Box Sessions: The Album, seems to finally be getting the success he deserves. In fact, this fiery MC has made so much noise in both Los Angeles and the Bay Area over the years that many fans assume he hails from one city or the other, but as he explains in his Freestyle 101 interview, he was born in Fresno and had to venture up and down the coast to carve out a name for himself in the rap game.

And when Planet Asia (a.k.a. King Medallions) stepped into the booth at the Engine Room in Hollywood to spit fire over a Messiaz beat it was clear why so many MCs respect this dude– ‘cause he’s off the chain! But don’t ask us, just check the stats, baby!

CES 2008: CES Leaving Las Vegas?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 11:22 AM

Oh, Noes! The current rumor du-jour is that CES may be leaving Las Vegas.

According to MSNBC:

“We’ve heard from our attendees, from our exhibitors ... that the rates of hotels during the International CES are increasing out of proportion from what they think it should be,” said Jason Oxman, chief spokesman for the show’s organizer, the Consumer Electronics Association.

So... is it true or just a ploy for cheaper hotel rates? Would CES even be CES in some other city? Can you imagine the tech world traveling to Sheboygan for the Consumer Electronics Show?

CES 2008: PS3 Puts Blu-Ray Movies on PSP

Posted by Dan Whitehill - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 10:59 AM

Nintendo might have invented console-to-handheld connectivity, but Sony finally made it useful. According to PC World, Sony demonstrated the new technology at CES that will make it possible for owners to copy a Blu-Ray movie to their PSP.

In an update coming later this year, PS3 owners will be able to automatically make a lower quality version of any High Def Blu-Ray movie in their library and save it to PSP or Memory stick.

This is sweet because the PSP has been notoriously tedious to encode for and you won't have to buy any more UMD's. Not only that, but watching movies on the PSP via memory stick increases battery life compared to watching them via UMD.

While Sony might have been all excited about Skype on a PSP, TheFeed is ready to rock some portable Blade Runner and 300.

No word on exactly when the update will be available.

CES 2008: Panasonic, T-Mobile Making Camera

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 10:48 AM

According to engadget, T-Mobile and Panasonic may be teaming up to create a Lumix camera that beams pictures directly to the web.

"The cam will feature integrated access to T-Mobile HotSpot and will give owners the ability to beam images directly to Picasa Web Albums. The elusive Lumix -- which still sports no model number -- will apparently come bundled with a full year of complimentary HotSpot access, but we're told absolutely nothing else specs wise."

No word on what the mystery camera will cost or when it will be released, either.

CES 2008: Taser Gun + Rockin' = Fun

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 10:18 AM

Today at CES, Taser International introduced the Taser MPH, the first combination hand-held music player and Taser.

Thanks god!

I have been waiting for such an invention to come along. I mean, before I could even listen to music while electrocuting someone! I was such a loser! Now I am a waaaay better person!

The player, which has a 1-GB capacity that can hold around 150 tunes, comes in a belt holster, features a built-in laser pointer to aim, and shoots darts carrying 50,000 volts hits your victim.

And if you’re really good, you can zap someone to the beat of that latest pop hit (though don’t try this with house/techo music or you will surely kill someone).

"It's fashion, with a bite," said Taser International spokesman Stephen Tuttle.

Jeeez, that’s kind of an understatement isn’t it?

Hilary Clinton vs. Her Tivo

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 10:11 AM

Wouldn’t you think if you are running for president, one of the most powerful jobs a person can have in this world, you should at least be able to set your dang Tivo?

Well, if you do, then you better not vote for Hilary Clinton.

Why?

Because beacons of truth TMZ is reporting that sources overheard Hillary Clinton at a cocktail reception complaining to daughter Chelsea that she can't get her TiVo to work properly. She said her box overwrites the shows she inputs manually with shows she's not interested in at all.

Sony: No More Streams Or Downloads!

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 9:47 AM

Billboard is reporting that “Sony/ATV Music Publishing has instructed the Harry Fox Agency today to stop all future licensing of any of the publisher's repertoire for streaming or limited downloads.”

The move is in response to a Digital Media Association's motion filed yesterday with the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) which argues that an interactive stream is not a digital phonorecord delivery (DPD) and should not have to be licensed for reproduction. Instead, it proposes, an interactive stream should only trigger a performance license from ASCAP, BMI or SESAC.

The music publisher’s mandate could impact services like RealNetwork's Rhapsody, Napster and MediaNet and raises an interesting issue: does a service that offers a streaming or limited downloads of a publisher's songs previously released on records intentionally infringe the publisher's copyrights. So Sony/ATV asked the Copyright Royalty Board to request the Copyright Office to issue a decision whether or not an interactive stream is a digital phonorecord delivery. If a stream is not a DPD, then digital services would not be required to obtain a DPD reproduction license under copyright law.

Bond Gets Another Girl

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 8:49 AM

Yesterday, TheFeed let you in on the hiring of British actress Gemma Arterton in the next James Bond movie.

Today, the casting of another Bond Girl was announced: Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko will be the "lead" Bond girl, Camille, in the next Bond action picture. A top European model, Olga recently co-starred with Timothy Olyphant in Hitman and opposite Elijah Wood in Paris, je t'aime.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, as Camille, Kurylenko will help Bond "come to terms with the emotional consequences of Vesper's betrayal," which seems incredibly ponsy for Jame Bond...In Diamonds Are Forever, it takes Bond about 12 seconds to "come to terms" with the death of his wife. Then he's back in a casino drinking gin and playing baccarat. But it was the 70s; men were men.

While our comments section is generally reserved for heated arguments about whether the PS3 is hotter than the Wii or Blu-Ray is better than HD DVD, we'd like you to take a moment to discuss what's really important. Namely:

Codemaster Announces Con

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 8:23 AM

MMO producer Codemaster is hosting their own convention in England.

Connect 2008 goes down in Birmingham between March 14 and 15 at something called Omega Sektor, where convention goers spend two days gaming, meeting the teams behind the games and getting involved in round table discussions, Q&A sessions and future game content presentations. Mostly, though, we're guessing lots of D&D Online.

Tickets are limited, and will go onsale when the convention's official website launches.

The company makes several online, massive games that are not World of Warcraft including Dungeons and Dragons Online, Stormreach and Lord of the Rings Online.

TheFeed may attend the Con just to suggest an idea to Codemaster. We think they should extend their business model of developing online versions of well-know properties like Dungeons and Dragons and LOTR and use their license of Dirty Dancing to create Swazye Online, the world's first MMOSPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Swayze Playing Game).
