Gorgoroth Spells Danger

Posted by Frank Meyer - Monday, January 08, 2007 3:47 PM

The frontman for Norwegian black metal stalwarts Gorgoroth, a gent named Gaahl, was recently released from prison after being locked up since the spring of 2006.

Gaahl, 31, was sentenced to 14 months in prison in February 2005 for beating a 41-year-old man and threatening to drink his blood.

Hey! Now that’s going too far! I think we can all relate to beating the crap out of an old man, but drinking blood is just plain gross. That’s how you get Hepatitis!

Honda's Newest Concept Car Frickin' Sweet

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, January 08, 2007 3:02 PM

I'm more than a little in lust with the concept Acura unvieled today.

Sure, it looks a little like a race car a tenth grade gearhead would draw in detention, but 10th grade gearheads are cool.

According to Honda, the car is a V10, rear wheel drive and "gracefully combines advance technology and strong emotions."

More details and pics if you click.

360 'Guitar Hero 2' Details Revealed

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, January 08, 2007 2:19 PM

Like many of you, I have unfulfilled dreams of rock-stardom. But I don't want to be in a brash metal band wearing spandex. I'd dream of a career as in an early '90s shoe-gazer band like My Blood Valentine.

I'd wear eyeliner and flannel and act like even moving was a huge chore, let alone rockin' out. I'd be at that big rock show and yell out to the crowd: "Are you ready to mope?"

That's why Guitar Hero 2 is so awesome. I play it constantly staring down at the floor and mumbling. I will play it that way when the 360 version drops. It's awesome that it's coming out on 360s, with a wireless guitar controller. Kotaku checked it out. Here are the tracks they mentioned:

  • "Life Wasted" by Pearl Jam
  • "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N Roses.
  • "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" by Rick Derringer
  • "Hush" by Deep Purple .
  •  "Salvation" by Rancid
  • "Possum Kingdom" by the Toadies
  • "Dead!" (emphasis theirs) from My Chemical Romance
  • "Billion Dollar Babies" by Alice Cooper.

NBC, Netflix Team Up For 'Heroes' DVD

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, January 08, 2007 2:11 PM

I missed Heroes. Totally missed the boat. But, there's always a chance to catch up at the end of the season, right? Yes, but I can catch up now through the power of Netflix, because they and NBC are distributing DVDs with the first 11 episodes of the show on them, just for people like me. Now I can see what all the fuss is about, and be inevitably disappointed by the fuss!

Also on this magical DVD will be two NBC pilots, The Black Donnellys and Raines, which stars Jeff Goldblum, finally caving in and taking TV money for the first time since he did Tenspeed and Brownshoe, with Ben Vereen.

108 Inches of Pure Viewing Pleasure

Posted by Eugene Morton - Monday, January 08, 2007 2:05 PM

Sharp has unveiled its 108 inch LCD TV, not that they could find a tarp anywhere that was big enough to fully cover it. That’s 9 feet. This TV’s horizontal measure is wider than Shaq is tall.

You could watch a Miami heat game on it and probably see a life size representation of Shaq play on the screen.

Of course, if you have enough money to afford this TV then you’re most likely rich enough to just hire Shaq himself to hang out on your private basketball court and do slam dunks all day. It’s good to be you.

J-Z’s GM SUV

Posted by Frank Meyer - Monday, January 08, 2007 1:56 PM

Rapper Jay-Z has teamed up with General Motors to offer the public a "Jay-Z Blue" colored SUV.

Hova emerged from one onstage Saturday during a celebrity-filled party thrown by General Motors Corp. on the eve of media previews for the North American International Auto Show. Posing with the cars were Carmen Electra, Jennifer Hudson, Vivica A. Fox, Rosie Perez, Christian Slater, Mario Lopez and Nick Lachey.

Wait a second, GM and Joay-Z partner up and all they can come up with is to paint a friggin’ car blue? That’s it? No pimped out interior? No sweet rims? No turbo charged engine? Just…blue? You guys blew it, man…..

(By the way, is it me or does Jay look like a big wussy in that picture?)

Thiessen Joins 'What About Brian?'

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, January 08, 2007 1:53 PM

What About Brian? is the hottest lame show on television. The show features Barry Watson, who seems to be magnetically attracted to steaming hot chicks on television shows. (He was the oldest child on 7th Heaven, opposite Jessica Biel). Now, in addition to the new addition of Stacy Kiebler to the show, (she of the greatest legs on Earth) Tiffani Amber Thiessen will be joining the cast.

This adds a ton of eye candy to a show that's, at best, mediocre. ABC seems committed to trying to lock down the 'desperately in need of hot babes to look at' audience. My suggestion? TiVo it, fast forward through all of the parts that don't contain hot chicks, and turn the sound all the way down. Then, it might be Emmy material.

Grandmasters, the collaboration album between Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs and Wu Tang’s GZA, is getting the remix treatment.

The Grandmasters Remix Album project finds DJ Khalil, James Alsanders, Scoop DeVille, DJ Solo, LD, King Karnov, St. Louis, Lewis One, and Dialekt putting their own beats behind vocals from the original.

The effort will feature a bonus DVD of concert footage and a peek inside the studio sessions behind the music.

Grandmasters Remix Album will be released on Muggs’ own Angeles Records later this year.

Mos Def-inately Getting Screwed

Posted by Frank Meyer - Monday, January 08, 2007 12:41 PM

Rapper/actor Mos Def’s new album is out in stores…er, kinda…

It seems that the his label, Geffen, rushed the album out on December 29 due to an online leak, but did a really half-assed job of it. As in, like, it’s barely in stores at all. Though the effort, True Magic, can be purchased online and at some retail outlets, Geffen is calling the project a limited-edition "pre-release," as opposed to a full-scale album release by the rapper — a rare if not unprecedented situation.

When asked whether the darn thing actually came out or not by MTV, a Geffen publicist said, "It did and it didn't."

Now that’s what I call label support!

Fox Reveals Slate Of New, Stupid Shows

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, January 08, 2007 11:59 AM

Oh, Fox. Sometimes, you are the best network on television. The Simpsons, 24, even Prison Break have been really successful and big hits. But the newest slate of pilots make it seem like they're just kind of giving up. These are some of the lamest, most derivative ideas of all time. Check it out.

There's the Untitled Nurses Project, which is about the lives and loves of some nurses at a big city hospital. (I'm sure the pitch was 'It's Sex and the City meets Grey's Anatomy!') Then we have Canterbury's Law, which is about a lawyer who pushes the boundaries of the law to help his clients ('It's like House, but with lawyers!')

Macworld Is Here! Jobs Tomorrow!

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, January 08, 2007 11:39 AM

In what has become an annual event in the tech world, Steve Jobs will take the stage tomorrow at Macworld in San Francisco, and is likely to wow us all with some new gadget and another talk about the future of digital technology. This year, the speculation is pretty heavy that Jobs will be announcing the iPod phone, a long-rumored device that would mark Apple's entry into the phone wars.

Also, these events are unique because they have become the techie equivalent of Woodstock, with tens of thousands of people streaming in from around the world to watch Jobs take the stage. The atmosphere is a little like a rock concert...with tons of geeks. Think a Weezer show in 1995.

Should be interesting.

Erik Estrada Lets The Vulgarity Fly

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Monday, January 08, 2007 11:14 AM

Do not, I repeat, do not call Erik Estrada by anything other than his given name. A man who was stabbed in the leg during a domestic disturbance called him Emilio Estevez during the shooting for Armed and Famous, in which Estrada is actually made a cop and allowed to deal with real time crime situations, and Estrada unleashed a stream of profanity that would make your grandmother cry.

Apparently, the argument also included Martin Luther King, and the fact that Estrada doesn't have any street cred when it comes to civics. You know, up until now, I thought that this was the dumbest idea for a show to come down the pike in a long, long time, but now that I know that Estrada has the kind of imbalance that really turns reality shows into gold, I might have to admit I was wrong.

No word on whether or not they will be keeping the tirade in the broadcast. One can only hope.

Toshiba Makes HD-DVD Players Affordable

Posted by Eugene Morton - Monday, January 08, 2007 10:44 AM

Come the spring, Toshiba will be releasing the HD-A20 HD DVD player, a $600 DVD player capable of running HD-DVD format movies in 1080p.

It’s currently the cheapest way to enjoy 1080p DVDs if you’ve indeed decided to make your stand with the HD-DVD camp and have turned your back on Blu-Ray.

Though, for the same price you could just buy a Playstation 3 and get a 1080p Blu-Ray player and videogame console all in one, but your format choices are your own. Choose wisely, Padawan.
