Life Is Good With HD DVD+Blu-ray Combo Player

Posted by Josh Lawson - Thursday, January 04, 2007 6:41 PM

The rumors have finally been put to rest.

LG is debuting their HD DVD + Blu-ray combo player in Vegas and I will make sure to get back to you on this one with the full details. Expect the pricing to be competitive and definitive news as to whether they will be using hybrid hardware to make this easy solution possible.

With CES just a couple days away, LG Electronics wants to make sure that not only are they the talk of CES, but the solution to the HD DVD / Blu-ray debate.

Hopefully this will finally put to rest all of the unnecessary delays towards High Definition movies kicking DVD to the curb.

Amazon Founders Private Space Ship

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 04, 2007 3:21 PM

Jeff Bezos is my hero. He founded Amazon.com, made a billion dollars, and rather than holing up in some impossible mansion and petting his army of robot dogs, he's using his dough to create a spaceship.

My personal dream of leaving this hellish planet behind and finally having a little time to myself is one step closer to fruition!

Also, Bezos is looking for employees for his Blue Origin project. I was excited because I figured he needed a barely literate gasbag like me to buy drugs, stroke his ego and agree to everything he said, but it turns out he's looking for "a hard working, technically gifted, team-oriented, experienced aerospace engineer or engineering leader."

I am none of these things.

Anyway, the video of the test flight of the adorable rocket is up on the site, and it is AMAZING. Please watch and dream of the day when you too can go up into low orbit in a private spaceship.

'Legend of the Dragon' Headed To Wii

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 04, 2007 3:04 PM

You know what the Wii needs? A good fighting game. I mean, there's only so many times you can punch someone's face off in Wii Sports Boxing before you get a little bored.

That's why I'm happy that Legend of the Dragon is coming to the innovative next-gen system. The 3D fighter is based on the Legend of the Dragon cartoon and will feature 19 playable characters... or 31 playable characters, depending on how you do the math. (See, there are 19 playable characters as well as the ability to transform into one the temple guardians. There are 12 temple guardians, so... nevermind.)

The game is from Game Factory, and will be out in 2007.

Metal Space Object Attacks New Jersey

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, January 04, 2007 2:57 PM

A mysterious, golf ball sized metal object plowed through the roof of a home in Monmouth County, New Jersey Wednesday morning before embedding itself in one of the structure’s walls.

Police have thus far been unable to identify the object or figure out where it came from. They can only confirm that it’s not part of an airplane, nor is it radioactive. Could this be related to the meteor-like missile fragments that recently crashed in Colorado?

Jeter on Cover of MLB 2K Game... Again

Posted by Matthew Bretz - Thursday, January 04, 2007 1:31 PM

Justin Morneau may have swiped the AL MVP from him, but there’s one thing the Twins’ slugger can’t take from New York Yankees Shortstop Derek Jeter, and that’s the cover of 2K Sports' annual baseball game.

Jeter will grace the cover of Major League Baseball 2K7, making this the third straight year he has done so for the series and triggering an avalanche of “triple-play” references from sports and game journalists everywhere.

It’s quite an honor for the former GQ Man of the Year, cologne purveyor, and second-best shortstop in New York. “It is a real privilege to represent the premier MLB title in the video game industry,” says Jeter. “Just as I am always striving to improve my game, 2K Sports is constantly improving theirs, and this dedication has made Major League Baseball 2K7 the best MLB video game ever.”

Xbox Downloads Beat Amazon

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 04, 2007 12:46 PM

Microsoft's recently launched movie downloading service is doing very, very well, Variety reports. So well, in fact, that it crushed, crumpled and otherwise destroyenated their closest competitor, Amazon.com's download service, Unbox. Although Unbox offers a wider selection of movies, it's not helping.

Even when the movies didn't necessarily do all that well at the box office, people are snapping that stuff up from 360s. The reasoning: It's much easier to get movies from your 360 than Unbox's download-then-burn-the-disc plan.

Not noted in the article, but my personal analysis: The selection of older catalog movies on Xbox's download service is eclectic and interesting (Clockwork Orange, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown) and thus encourages people to check back often for new, cool flicks. I know I do.

Irwin Death Footage Given To Cops

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, January 04, 2007 12:07 PM

Steve Irwin's death won't be seen on the internet, on television, or anywhere else, it seems. The remaining footage of the death of the Crocodile Hunter has been turned over to Australian police to insure it never got out to the public. This was, apparently, a gift from the Aussies to Terri Irwin, Steve's widow.

To be honest, I think this is a good maneuver. It's very classy. Sure, there's some curiosity over the way that Irwin met his death, but there's a family involved. Do we really need to see the blood? I certainly hope not. That would help me lose my faith in human nature pretty quickly. Anyway, it's a moot point. And good for that.

The Grammy nominated Producer of the Year has helmed recent hits for the likes of Fergie, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Nas and The Game.

Mario Lopez Hosts Miss America

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, January 04, 2007 11:42 AM

Has Miss America gone down in flames, or what? What was once the class of the pageant industry has now become a clownish shadow of the event it once was. Example? Mario Lopez will be hosting the 2007 Miss America pageant. That's right. Mario F**kin' Lopez. His resume? Lest you forget, Lopez played A.C. Slater on Saved By The Bell, before establishing credibility on Dancing With The Stars.

What the hell kind of society is this where you resurrect your career by starring in what is essentially a minstrel show? In addition, Lopez is a jagoff. I know this from personal experience. Once, I tried to compliment him on being good on SBTB, and he told me, no lie, to go 'F' myself. For reals. I mean, what kind of a guy is that?

The host of the doomed Miss America pageant, I say. And the whimper that ends the Latin Hollywood Revolution. Even Ricky Martin hates this guy.

Pamhandling: Kid Rock Vs. Tommy Lee

Posted by Frank Meyer - Thursday, January 04, 2007 11:32 AM

Kid Rock reportedly tried to attack rocker Tommy Lee in his Vegas hotel room on New Year's Eve after being taunted by the Motley Cruester over his split from Pamela Anderson….but had the wrong room!

Kid Rock and Lee have both been married to busty babe, with Rock splitting from Anderson as recently as November. Rock had reportedly been receiving calls from Lee taunting him about his impending divorce from the former Baywatch star, and tried to confront him at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Smashing Pumpkins Back In Action

Posted by Frank Meyer - Thursday, January 04, 2007 11:24 AM

In a post on the Smashing Pumpkins’ MySpace page, frontman Billy Corgan says the reunited band will be touring this year in support of a new album, which will also be in stores this year.

"This year for us will see a new album of songs and a world tour of tears, and we truly look forward to playing again for fans young, old and missed," Corgan wrote. "So yes, tunes are being dusted off, while others are being asked to kindly submit to an upstart millennia and all its asking. ... When we opened the lid on this music box, we were pleasantly surprised at the music that played: familiar yet unknown, welcoming but not sentimental, and that is all we can ask."

While Corgan has said drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is in the mix, it is not confirmed whether former Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky will be involved. Or whether the new music will be any good. But one can hope…

Rocket Debris Prettier Than Nature

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, January 04, 2007 11:21 AM

At around 6:15 this morning, the sky above Wyoming and Colorado split open and was bejeweled with what appeared to be a school of meteors.

Reports began flooding into local news outlets, with even people in Kansas and Nebraska reporting the strange and beautiful occurrence, some even saying, "I have just seen the most incredible thing ever in my life."

It seems Mother Nature has been one-upped by mankind yet again, as the falling meteors were in fact bits of an SL-4 rocket body that was reentering our atmosphere, according to NORAD.
