Microsoft Offers Up Free XBLA Game

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, January 03, 2008 8:44 PM

Microsoft has finally issues a statement regarding the Xbox Live outages and it looks like it's good news!

Here is the statement:

Dear Xbox LIVE Members:

During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records.  This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.

As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break.  While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance.  I would like to take this moment to thank you each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state.

Horror MMO To Release Early 2008

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Thursday, January 03, 2008 4:31 PM

Gravity Interactive has just announced that they will release a horror-themed MMO titled Requiem: Bloodymare in early 2008. Set in the world of Ethegia, players take on the role of the Temperions, beings created through genetic engineering and arcane rites to engage in bloody combat with the walking nightmares that have been released upon the world from the misuse of science and magic. Sounds spine-tingly-dingly.

Requiem: Bloodymare will use the Havok engine, which means all those chains, spikes and bloody bits will look extra awesome. The time of day will also become a factor in your gameplay, as much more powerful creatures tend to stalk the streets at night. Players will fight off the drooling dreams of a psychopath with genetic engineering, mystic arts, and a beast possession system that allows you to  possess and transform into equally ghoulish creates.

Not much else has been released about the game, but we'll be sure to update you if any more coagulated chunks of information drop into our hands. For now, check out the game's website, and try not to piss yourself.

Epic Fail Thursday

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 3:25 PM

TheFeed is proud to present Epic Fail, our feature that brings you the greatest failures in the world of videogames, popular culture and technology. We're not talking run-of-the-mill defeat here; Epic Fail is reserved for the top of the bottom: Grand-scale fiascos only.

This week, Epic Fail is featuring the worst movie sequels of all time. Check it out:

  • Dumb and Dumberer: In case you forgot, Dumb and Dumber was a funny Jim Carrey movie. Not a smart Jim Carrey movie or anything, but definitely funny. The sequel is a fail movie. Instead of Jim Carrey we get a lookalike (Eric Olsen) and instead of humor we get crap. The most telling moment in the film: Bob Saget yelling, "There's sh*t everywhere!" Yeah, Bob, we noticed.
  • Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom: This was a controversial choice. MDalonzo insisted that it is a terrible movie compared to the original. Everyone else was like, "Short Round was funny!" or "It was actually pretty good." But we realized no one but MDalonzo had seen it as an adult, and he assures us that we only like it because we saw it when we were eight. So we're including it here. Tell MDalonzo he's wrong if you want to. In fact, yell at him in our comments.

Bikini Model Goes Insane

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 2:57 PM

When a bikini model goes ape-crap, kidnaps her ex-boyfriend, ties him to a chair, sticks a knife in his ear and bites him, TheFeed is there with the before and after pics for ya.

The bikini model/law student accused of the above crimes, Kumari Fulbright, looks like this:

We think she's hotter after, actually... but we like the methed-out lunatic look.

Guinness Wants Your Gaming Record

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 2:00 PM

Since its birth in the 1950s, the Guinness Book of World's Records has ended many bar arguments and caused many people to do dumb thing in search of dubious fame. But gaming hasn't been the focus of the tome. Until now.

Guinness is putting out a videogame edition of their famous book, and they want you to submit your game-related records.

It's true. Go to the website and submit. Attack of the Show did their part by building the world's largest arcade machine. Now it's your turn.

'The Greatest American Hero' Could be Herek

Posted by Ty Colfax - Thursday, January 03, 2008 1:54 PM

If I were an executive at a big studio (which I will be in a matter of months) I would write, “great potential, casting crucial!” on anything that crossed my desk regarding The Greatest American Hero adaptation that is forthcoming. We’ve got a great set-up for some really good physical comedy, some good subtle gags, and a nice cheeseball moral. Please for the love of G-d, big studio, do not make this a vehicle for Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, or that Hot Rod SNL kid. I know your financial success depends on such a casting decision and that they would pretty much seal the deal in b.o. dominance, but there’s so much potential here. Don’t sell it short by selling it to the lowest common denominator.

The flic is set to be directed by Stephen Herek who gave us the charming and enjoyable gems Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Critters, and The Mighty Ducks. But let us not forget that he also subjected us to Holy Man, the live-action 101 Dalmations, Three Musketeers, Mr. Holland’s Opus, and Man of the House. Let’s hope he’s got enough Bill and Ted left in him to deliver the goods on GrAmHero.

Pioneer Says it Has the World's Thinnest HDTV

Posted by Ty Colfax - Thursday, January 03, 2008 11:43 AM

Holy sort of pointless, but still amazing innovation, Batman. Pioneer is going to unleash a new ultra-thin HD Plasma TV at CES in less than a week. Most of it is a mere 9mm thick, which is thinner than a standard DVD case.

Some bloke at BBC accidentally leaked a video of the cutting-edge hardware and now it’s out on the webs. We can’t wait to see it this weekend. We’ll let you know if it’s all that or just another digital picture frame.

Also, is a TV this thin really necessary? It looks like I could accidentally poke my finger through it. Sometimes, thin enough is thin enough.

Nugget From The Net

Today's Nugget From The Net comes from the exciting (and soon to be extinct) world of public access television!

Dungeon Majesty follows the adventures of four girls who play Dungeons and Dragons, then act out exciting battles with big cheesey monsters.

Why isn't this on TV all the time?

Bay Blithely Mentions Transformers 2

Posted by Ty Colfax - Thursday, January 03, 2008 10:55 AM

In an extremely informal context, Bay has offhandedly mentioned that there will be a Transformers 2 and it will have more bots. It's almost like you were sitting with him at dinner and after ordering, he turns and says, “Oh by the way, I'm doing Transformers 2.”

I guess it's no secret that any movie that makes so much money and has so wide a net of ways to make money (toys, merch, games) is pretty much a shoe-in for a sequel after its initial offering.

Obama, Paul Win Online Primaries

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, January 03, 2008 10:50 AM

In an election with the impact of roughly a kindergarten straw poll, Barack Obama and Ron Paul have won the MySpace 'primaries' handily, beating out such luminaries as Hillary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, and the "leave Britney alone" guy. Voters on the MySpace Impact political site were the voters, and many say they will actually vote in the real world.

Since a great majority of people on the internets are either hopeful, non-jaded youth, or crazy people, neither victory comes as a surprise. Oh, and also, the vote didn't require people to be of a legal voting age, which explains the relatively strong showings of Zac Efron (6 percent) and Mike Huckabee (16 percent.)

'Xbox Ultimate' Imminent?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 10:38 AM

The scuttlebutt on the digital streets is that Microsoft is planning to produce an "Ultimate" Xbox.

How ultimate? Try:

  • 1080p HDMI output
  • built in Wi-Fi
  • hi-def audio ouput
  • cooler hardware
  • extremely quiet fan
  • built in HD-DVD drive.
  • 320GB hard disk

We think this reads more like a wish-list than an actual product, and the source (U.K.'s Stuff magazine website) is a little shady as to whether they actually know something or are just guessing, but if it's true... wow. The future 360 would then have the power of a PlayStation 3!

Stay tuned to our CES coverage (Live, January 7th and 8th @ 7 PM) because maybe, just maybe, Papa Bill Gates will drop the "ultimate" word at the Microsoft press conference. But don't bet your plasma on it or anything.

Sony Mulls Subscription Service

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 10:34 AM

The rumor of the day: Sony is considering a subscription-based PSN download service.

In a poll sent to customers in the Far East, Sony asked if a "one price for unlimited downloads" service would improve the PlayStation 3 and PSP experience.

TheFeed is like, "yes."

Provided someone else foots the bill, of course.

Writers Strike To Boost Gaming?

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, January 03, 2008 10:23 AM

While the writers strike might be bad news for the entertainment industry, experts are saying that it might not be that way for the videogame industry. In fact, all of the repeats on television and the impending drought at the movie theater might just drive people directly to playing more videogames, they say.

See, the strike doesn't stop writers from working on games, and that, combined with the availability of games and consoles, at a cheaper price now than anytime in 2007, means that people might well flock to gaming, which can only be good for the quality and variety of games out on the market.

Netflix is Going Set-Top with LG

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, January 03, 2008 10:06 AM

Looks like the rumors are true as Netflix is set to move into the set-top realm with the help of LG.

Netflix's Reed Hastings said that this could be "the first of many such deals" with goals for "a hundred Netflix-capable boxes."

LG has not announced what product this will end up being in or if it will be rolled into an existing box.

What we do know is that the streaming service will be included in all of Netflix's plans and will not carry an extra charge.

'Far Cry 2' Officially On Consoles

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 9:48 AM

Ubisoft announced today that a sequel to blockbuster videogame Far Cry is officially in the the works for the 360 and PlayStation 3, so we'll finally get to step into the mysterious shoes of mysterious protagonist Jack Carver and, hopefully, kill more of those damn mercenaries.

Yes. We know the website has been up for months, but that's for the PC. According to the company:

More than just a visual and technological achievement, Far Cry 2 immerses players in an entirely new kind of gaming experience, featuring a custom-made video game engine built from the ground up. Players will discover a true open world gameplay set in one of the most beautiful environments in the world, Africa, brought to life by high-definition next-gen technology. Far Cry 2 is scheduled to ship fiscal 2008–2009.

So all that and a new CRYengine too? Rad (as the kids say).

Jay-Z Teams With Apple?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 9:26 AM

The rumor is that Jay "Jigga" Z is teaming with Apple to launch a new record label.

How's that for an awesome team-up? Jobs and J-Hova? It's not official, but the theory is the venture would center around a digital distribution model rather than the traditional CD based business.

We're concerned Jay-Z will retire from his newly formed partnership soon after he starts it. Either that or Steve Jobs will change his name to M.C.-Intosh and do guest spots on one of DMX's gospel-rap records.

Once And For All: No 'MGS 4' For 360

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, January 03, 2008 8:22 AM

The rumors that Metal Gear Solid 4 is going multi-platform have been swirling around the internet since the mid 1940s, but, according to Konami, it's just not going to happen. The game will be playable only by Sony fans.

A Konami spokesperson told thegamereviews.com:  "For the record, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a PlayStation 3 exclusive and there are no plans to develop an Xbox 360 version of the game."

But still, it could happen, right? In other words, while it's highly unlikely that MGS 4 will come out on the 360, it's still physically possible, and in an infinite Universe, anything that isn't impossible is happening right now, has always happened and will continue to happen, so we are forced to conclude that Metal Gear Solid 4 has always been available on the 360.

We're playing it right now on the 360 in our imagination, and it's awesome!
