New Games This Week: Prototype

When you think of Prototype, you probably remember the ridiculously deep set of superpowers, the horrible infection devouring Manhattan, and the gleeful destruction of both life and property that was almost impossible to avoid. You also probably remember protagonist Alex Mercer, the maladjusted scientist who viewed his miraculous powers as a curse to be overcome and avenged. To be blunt, he was a bit of a dick.

Prototype 2 promises much of the same, but with one crucial distinction: you don't play as Mercer. The new lead is a soldier named James Heller. And he's not just replacing Mercer as the game's hero; he's actively trying to hunt Mercer down and kill him. The first game's hero is now the sequel's big boss.

Dave Fracchia, VP of Radical Entertainment, explains that Heller's introduction and Mercer's new role as the bad guy reveals a deeper truth about the franchise. "The star of Prototype is the Blacklight Virus itself, and how it effects everyone differently," Fracchia asserts. "If you look at movies dealing with viruses it's often about how that virus has infected all sorts of people throughout the world. So we realized that's who the star was. Being able to tell the story from another angle got us very excited, and got us thinking about other protagonists."

Radical didn't want to drop Mercer entirely, though, especially after memorably reconstituting himself at the end of the first game. "We didn't want to lose Alex's potential story," Fracchia says, "so one of the guys in the room came up with a brilliant idea - what if Alex created the next Prototype?"

Entire Ultimate Marvel vs.
Capcom 3 Roster Leaked

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 arrived a couple weeks ago with twelve new characters itching for a fight --six famous faces pulled from the historic annals of each company. Today we look at the tale of the tape for Capcom's new combatants and point out a few comics worth reading to better understand their motivation as they wither under some online jerk's Sentinel spamming.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

You thought the battle was over. You defeated Galactus with your cross-company trio of Ryu, Captain America, and MODOK, and saved two worlds in the process. Little did you know that just a few short months later a dozen fighters would show up to ruin everything.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 arrived last week with twelve new characters itching for a fight--six famous faces pulled from the historic annals of each company. Today we look at the tale of the tape for Marvel's new combatants and point out a few comics worth reading to better understand their motivation as they wither under some online jerk's Sentinel spamming.

The Next Batmam: Arkham City - Five Comic Books That Need Rocksteady

If you believe the reviews Batman: Arkham City might be even better than Arkham Asylum. Rocksteady's first Batman title was the surprise hit of 2009, selling millions of units and racking up numerous Game of the Year awards. Now Arkham Asylum is poised to repeat. Considering the Go-Go Checked past of both Batman and superhero games, this is a startling turnaround, and similar to the recent trajectory of the Batman film franchise.

By the end of the 1990s the Batman movie series was deader than Val Kilmer's career. Cause of death: Joel Schumacher in the multiplex with Batman and Robin. Schumacher veered hard from the dimestore goth of Tim Burton and straight into the camp fantasia last occupied by the Batman TV show of the 1960s, killing off a billion dollar franchise in the process.

Batman's cinematic corpse was eventually brought back to life by the human Lazarus Pit known as Christopher Nolan. The director of Memento brought the stern seriousness of Frank Miller's 1980s Batman comics to the movies, winning over America with a slightly more realistic and psychological look at the Caped Crusader. After decimating the box office with 2008's The Dark Knight, Warner Brothers asked Nolan to oversee the reboot of another beleaguered comics legend: Superman.

If Warner Brothers turns to Nolan to salvage other superheroes, they could very well do the same with Rocksteady. A publishing company with a history as long and varied as DC's features dozens of characters and concepts that are fertile ground for video games, and Rocksteady has proven themselves thoroughly capable of tilling that soil. Here are a few DC properties we'd love to see Rocksteady work on.

Getting Girls Into Video Game Development Jobs

Last week we brought you G4 University, which aims to get you into the video game industry in one career track or another. But, as most people know, that field is predominantly male. That hasn't escaped the attention of some people, including some who have deep pockets. Over the last month college students around the nation have shared stories about their summer internships with their classmates. Only one of those students was a recipient of the G.I.R.L. Scholarship.

Alicia Crawford won this year's Gamers In Real Life Scholarship, a program run by Sony Online Entertainment and dedicated to increasing the role of women in the video game industry. The scholarship includes $10,000 for tuition and a ten-week paid internship with Sony Online Entertainment. Crawford spent this summer in San Diego working on art assets for the MMO Free Realms.

"It's been quite a blessing," Crawford says. "It's given me the opportunity to work in the industry and get hands-on experience working with a team. I have a better understanding of the game design process as a whole."
