In the video below, horror filmmaker James Gunn gives Blair Herter a hands-on demo of Lollipop Chainsaw, talks teaming up with the great Suda51, and shows off a boss called Vikke the Viking.

"Vikke the Viking is voiced by Michael Rooker," Gunn told us. "This is Juliet fighting this wonderful Viking metal dude and trying to kill him. As you can see, he gets cut apart little-by-little and different parts of him keep coming at her."

Rock and roll, cheerleaders, monsters and blood... seriously, what more do you need in a game?

I'm always on the lookout for interesting takes on the survival-horror genre, and the trailer you see above shows off one of the most interesting I've seen in a long time. Among the Sleep is a first-person game told from the point-of-view of a two year-old child.

According to developer Krillbite, Among the Sleep lets its players "immerse themselves in a child's limitless imagination. This is a perspective we all have a distant familiarity with, but few can clearly remember what it felt like." If there's anything more horrifying, mysterious and interesting than inhabiting the body of a defenseless toddler, I can't imagine it.

There will be no weapons. The game will take place in the "borderland between dream and reality," where "surreal creatures and diverse environments will present you with both physical and mental obstacles that challenge your creativity."

I tried downloading the game by throwing money at my monitor, but it didn't work. Among The Sleep is set for release on PC and MAC next year.

Kingdoms of Amalur

Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee had some choice word for former baseball great (and current game developer) Curt Schilling at a press conference today.

Yesterday, Schilling said unnamed video-game publisher pulled out of a $35-million deal to finance the sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning because Chafee questioned the solvency of the Schilling's 38 Studios. "The governor is not operating in the best interest of the company by any stretch, or the taxpayers, or the state," Schilling said. "We're trying to save this company and we're working 24/7. The public commentary has been as big a piece of what's happening to us as anything out there."

When asked about this by reporters, Governor Chafee said, "I don't believe we scared away investors...An investor is not going to be scared away by some governor's comment."

Metro Last Light

Jake "Chilly Legs" Gaskill was fortunate enough to check out some of Metro: Last Light and found the ghoulish-shooter to be quite enjoyable. The game's insane attention to detail and atmospheric single-player make the game one to watch.

Here's a taste of Gaskill's Last Light preview:

Getting back to the full blown fight idea, we finally got a chance to see some good old-fashioned gun-on-monster action towards the end of the demo, when Artyom and his buddy are first attacked in the street by a large winged demon (at one point, the thing actually swooped down, picked up Artyom, and then dropped him to the hard, cold pavement below) and then by a band of especially rat-like Nosalises. In addition to showing off Last Light’s improved and more action-conscious gameplay, these attacks also demonstrated how quickly scenarios in Last Light can escalate. And boy, do they escalate.

5 Thoughts On Kingdoms of Amalur

More news on the swiftly unfolding drama surrounding Curt Schilling's beleagured development house 38 Studios: According to Schilling, a sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was in pre-production, and the State of Rhode Island scared potential investors away from 38 by implying the company was in danger of insolvency. Schilling said that he stands to lose $50 million of his own money.

Schilling says an unnamed video-game publisher pulled out of a $35-million deal to finance the sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, within three days of governor Lincoln Chafee's press conference about the financial troubles of 38 Studios.

Donkey Kong Record Shattered

Donkey Kong

Hank Chien is the best damn Donkey Kong player in the history of the planet Earth. The New York plastic surgeon recently scored 1,110,100 points on the archaic arcade machine, and thus became the envy of old school game fans the world over. Chien didn't even reach the final "kill screen" of the game in his historic performance.

"This was not a killscreen game," Chien told the Examiner. "I died two screens shy of the killscreen so my score would have been a little higher, perhaps 1.12 million points. I had a spare man going into Level 21 and was mentally preparing to sacrifice it on the last barrel board and my game was over a few minutes later. That's how Donkey Kong rolls sometimes."

Developer Techland is getting very good with their trailers. We all remember the jaw-dropping Dead Island trailer that the company introduces their game with, but the intro trailer for Mad Riders is almost as good... in a totally different way.

It's not often that a video game trailer literally makes me laugh out loud, but this one did... it's basically a parody of all the trends in recent trailers for video games. It's got a "touching" backwards section, dubstep, ridiculous statistics and more. Click "play."

38 Studios Talks Kingdom of Alamur: Reckoning

The soap opera around the seeming death of 38 Studios continues. Get your popcorn ready for this one. Yesterday, liberal website DailyKos posted a story about the death of the studio. It took a political slant, lobbing a bomb at Republican founder of 38 Studios,Curt Schilling with these words:

"So a lesson for future Republican entrepreneurs. If you want to start a business fine. But don't brag about how you'll never need govt help and then put taxpayers on the line for your failure to keep track of your balance books."

R. A. Salvatore, the writer of 38's Kingdoms of Amalur, responded  in a comment headed "Your facts are wrong.":

"38 didn't go begging for a handout from Rhode Island...Rhode Island offered to secure a bond for them when the credit crunch reigned, trying to lure them out of Massachusetts."

A recently unearthed patent filed by Sony may indicate the future of in-game advertising… and the future looks pretty annoying.

The patent, dug up by an intrepid user of the NeoGaf forum, indicates that someone at Sony is at least considering the idea of adding interrupting advertisements to games, so rather than just the occasional out-of-place billboard, games may literally make you wait through a commercial in order to play.

The Secret World

The release of The Secret World has been delayed, but don't worry. It's not because the game isn't ready or anything. Funcom says they'll put out the horror-MMO on July 3 in order to "places The Secret World in a more positive launch window which will benefit the launch of the game."

If that's too long to wait, don't worry. The Secret World's third Beta Weekend, titled "Hell Raised." will begin on June 15th and run until June 17th. In this Beta Weekend players will be able to experience the Illuminati and Dragon starter experiences as well as the Templar experience.

Rhode Island Governor On Kingdoms of Amalur:

In a press conference held earlier today in Rhode Island, the governor of the state discussed gaming for a bit. At issue: the fate of now-defunct development house 38 Studios and its subsidiary Big Huge Games. The studio, founded by baseball great Curt Schilling, laid off all of its workers today.

When asked why the company had such disastrous financial trouble, Lincoln Chafee replied: "The game [Kingdoms of Amalur] failed. The game failed."

Interestingly, Chafee did not confirm the reports of layoffs, saying 38 hasn't told R.I. about them. Chafee also said he doesn't know whether 38 is planning to file for bankruptcy.
