THQ Cleaning House And Closing Studios?
Posted By: Raymond Padilla - Monday, November 03, 2008 4:56 PM

According to Wired's Game|Life, THQ is rumored to be shutting down five of its internal development studios. Wired claims:

"The official developer list has been removed without warning, replaced with a list that includes 5 fewer studios than the previous version. Presumably we'll hear some official confirmation on THQ's plans when the publisher reveals its quarterly financial reports this Wednesday."

THQ's critics point out that the company's recent offerings have been weak outside of its successful WWE and Nickelodeon games. An uneven portfolio combined with current economic conditions make this a tough time to be releasing risky titles, especially original franchises. It'll be interesting to see what announcements are included in THQ's financial report on Wednesday.

Retailers Out Of Space For Fake Instruments
Posted By: John Manalang - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 1:10 PM

Although retailers appreciate the amount of business music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band bring in, they present logistical problems when dealing with hundreds of thousands of units.

According to reports, retailers have been lashing out against instrument peripherals for consoles due to the amount of space they take up on their shelves. Less shelf space means less product and less product means less revenue.

One company, XS Games is taking a different approach. They developed a small peripheral that attaches to the Wiimote for their Wii version of their new music game, PopStar Guitar. The PS2 version will ship as software only, but will be compatible with all existing PS2 guitar peripherals. The game is expected to release later this month.

Wal-Mart was reportedly pleased at this approach as it means they can fit more product onto the shelves during the busy shopping season leading up to the Holidays. We think this only further emphasizes the need for full compatibility between instruments.

Posted By: Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, October 21, 2008 3:45 PM

You know those 20 tracks that you were promised when you got  Rock Band 2? They've been announced today. As you probably saw coming, none of the tracks are from the most widely known bands on earth, but they're free, and perhaps they're awesome! Here's the list:

  • The 88 - "Sons and Daughters"
  • Authority Zero - "No Regrets"
  • Between the Buried and Me - "Prequel To The Sequel"
  • The Cab - "Bounce"
  • The Chevelles - "Get It On"
  • The Cocktail Slippers - "Give It To Me"
  • Dealership - "Database Corrupted"
  • Endeverafter - "I Wanna Be Your Man"
  • The Ghost Hounds - "Ashes To Fire"
  • Hollywood Undead - "Young" * Kutless - "The Feeling"
  • The Len Price 3 - "If I Ain't Got You"
  • Lesley Roy - "I'm Gone, I'm Going"
  • Opiate for the Masses - "Burn You Down"
  • Semi-Precious Weapons - "Magnetic Baby"
  • Shaimus - "Like a Fool"
  • Thenewno2" - Crazy Tuesday"
  • Tickle Me Pink - "The Time Is Wrong"
  • Underoath - "Desperate Times, Desperate Measures"
  • X Japan - "I.V."

You'll be able to download them on November 4th using the secret code on your Rock Band 2 instruction manual.

The most interesting tracks to me are Between The Buried and Me's entry, because it has an accordion break and the track from The 88. In my former life as the Worst Rock Journalist in The World (tm), I discovered The 88! And so, my influence on Rock Band DLC continues. There's video proof under the cut.

'NBA 2K9' PC Shipped With No CD Keys
Posted By: John Manalang - Tuesday, October 21, 2008 3:38 PM

When PC games distribution goes wrong: Customers who have recently bought a copy of 2K Games's basketball title, NBA 2K9, were unable to install the game. The reason? A CD key was nowhere to be found in the packaging.

Forum user Snowflake 11 posted the following after attempting to install the game:

"I sent [a copy of NBA 2K9 for the PC] to 2K [Games] also, plus contacted Gamestop. They said to return it. I don't wanna as I hope to get a message back soon. Plus I try to call tech support but i think they are at lunch."

The publisher's working on a solution regarding the problem today and will let customers know by the end of the day through their website. NBA 2K9 is also now available for the PS3, PS2 and Xbox 360, but make sure the game disc is inside the case after you purchase it.

'Call Of Duty' Departing Word War II?
Posted By: John Manalang - Monday, October 20, 2008 1:03 PM

Treyarch producer Noah Heller touched on the subject that their upcoming FPS title Call of Duty: World At War may be the last game that will support a World War II setting. With the exception of Infinity Ward's massive hit Modern Warfare the Call of Duty game series have always faced-off against the Nazi regime.

In Heller's interview with Official Xbox Magazine, he said:

"Since World at War was in development for two years, it was still in development when Modern Warfare... well, it hadn't even come out yet," Heller explains. "So our path was a little bit set at that point but we also knew that we wanted to show the end of the war."

Modern Warfare's success was based on its gameplay mechanics and amazing multiplayer options, so WWII or not, as long as the title plays great, we have no complaints. Call of Duty: World At War will be out this November 11 for the PC, PS3, PS2, 360, Nintendo Wii and DS platforms.

PS3 Sales 'Solid' In North America
Posted By: John Manalang - Friday, October 17, 2008 10:13 AM

SCEA president Jack Tretton said that sales of the PS3 hardware are "solid" with a 94 percent year-on-year sales boost and an impressive 25 percent increase last month over August's charts. Tretton said:

"If the impressive pre-sale numbers and ratings for LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, and Resistance 2 are any indication, we anticipate hardware and software sales to continue to lift in October as we officially kick off the broadest and deepest software line-up this holiday, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and NBA '09: The Inside."

However, the recent delay of LittleBigPlanet to an as-of-yet unconfirmed date due to product recalls may significantly affect the hardware's October sales. The FPS sequel Resistance 2 will be available this November 4 and the online multiplayer shooter, SOCOM: Confrontation, is now available for the PS3. Motor Storm: Pacific Rift will be available this October 28 and NBA '09: The Inside is now available.
