Turns out that the rumors were true! Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are indeed coming to Mercenaries 2: World in Flames as playable characters in an upcoming update.

Barack Obama and Sarah Palin in Mercenaries 2

Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb revealed the news just moments ago on X-Play in the Gaming Update.

Tom Stratton of Pandemic Studios gave the following statement to X-Play:

"Mercenaries 2 is a game seemingly ripped straight out of today's headlines and fueled with the same type of over-the-top action found in the best summer blockbuster films. It only makes sense we inject the game with a spin on current affairs. The timing was too good to let pass.

If you missed the Gaming Update where the story broke, you can find that video under the cut.

'Gears of War 2' "Seriously 2.0" Achievement Already Unlocked
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Thursday, October 30, 2008 10:25 AM

Gears of War came with an achievement named "Seriously..." to get 10,000 kills in ranked multiplayer matches and most gamers never saw it unlocked. Gears of War 2 features an update to the achievement called "Seriously 2.0", which asks gamers to get 100,000 all-purpose kills.

These could be enemy kills in campaign, kills in Horde mode, or kills in ranked or unranked multiplayer. It's certainly less strict, but you'd think that 10 times the number of kills would take a long time, right?

Wrong. In fact, it takes less than 24 hours of played time to achieve.

Hit the cut for the details

Stefan Hobman sent OXM UK the following details about the achievement along with the picture proof:

  • There is NO gamerpic for getting Seriously 2.0, unlike the original Seriously achievement.
  • It's possible to get 100 kills a minute.
  • The achievement can be unlocked in under 24 hours actual gameplay time.
  • The easiest way to get the achievement is by repeatedly playing the last level of Gears of War 2's Campaign mode.

This is good news because we want that 1000/1000 on Gears of War 2.

Atari Crosses The Streams
Posted By: Raymond Padilla - Thursday, October 30, 2008 7:03 AM

Variety has reported that Atari has picked up the rights to Ghostbusters and Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. The former is slated for a summer 2009 release to coincide with the movie's 25th anniversary, while the latter is set for a spring 2009 launch. Variety's Ben Fritz writes:

"Deal is one of the most significant for Atari since it came back from the brink of bankruptcy earlier this year by securing new capital funds and recruiting an experienced team of videogame execs."

It's not surprising that these games, both of which sport high-profile licenses, found a new home. What's surprising is that they ended up with Atari. Ex-Sony executive and current Atari president Phil Harrison has indicated that the company would focus on online and social gaming experiences. Picking up two traditional console titles doesn't really fit into that strategy. That said, Harrison is a very smart and very tall (and very bald) man. He has a distinguished history as a videogame exec and knows what he's doing.

Metacritic User Scores Under Siege?
Posted By: James Elkin - Wednesday, October 29, 2008 2:48 PM

Fanboys have sabotaged Metacritic with thousands of negative votes for Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2, two unreleased games that almost nobody has played. As a result, userscores for both are in the basement, and there’s a growing sense that the newly released LittleBigPlanet is being targeted as well.

Metacritic games editor Marc Doyle has responded to the problem in writing, promising to “upgrade the registration requirements… in the near future”. In the meantime, he urges users to focus on Metascores.

While painful to industry executives who believe Metacritic’s content can affect sales, it doesn’t seem to be all that surprising. With the site’s growth, some say this kind of behavior was never a matter of if, but when.

'The Conduit' Team Looking For Alternatives To Wii Friend Codes
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Wednesday, October 29, 2008 1:43 PM

High Voltage Software, the developers of The Conduit, are reportedly looking for an alternative to Nintendo's Friend Code System on the Wii.

The Friend Code System has come under fire from gamers and the press for being needlessly complicated. It makes multiplayer gaming with friends a chore on the Wii, unlike Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network.

Chief Creative Officer of High Voltage, Eric Nofsinger, says that, "It’s something where we need to continue to work with [Nintendo] closely, and figure out something that does hit what they need, but also hits what we need as gamers, you know?"

In this latest trailer from SCE and Guerrilla Games' FPS sequel Killzone 2, we are reminded of the dangers of underestimating the enemy. They said it would be a walk in the park... apparently someone forgot to tell the Helghast.

Killzone 2 is currently set for a release in Februrary 2009 exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

Treyarch: "We Have The Best Shooter This Christmas" In 'Call of Duty: World at War'
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Tuesday, October 28, 2008 1:52 PM

Bring on the politely worded, inter-developer smack talk!! Noah Heller, a senior producer on Call of Duty: World at War over at Treyarch, has some words for all the other FPS & shooter games in town this holiday season.

“There’s a lot of competition this year, but I feel very strongly we have the best shooter this Christmas,” says Noah. “There [are] a lot of people new to the Call of Duty franchise following COD4, and they won’t be disappointed.

He drops the hammer, by adding, “I’m looking forward to Gears of War, Far Cry and Resistance 2, and I’m sure they will be great games, but I am confident the consumer will come back to Call of Duty.”

Cliff Bleszinski: Gears of War 2 just got called out, PR style! Anything to add, Ted Price? Or are you too busy releasing Resistance 2?

Come on, devs. Throw down!
