Tecmo's Team Ninja Speaks On The Post Itagaki Era
Posted By: Raymond Padilla - Monday, November 03, 2008 4:03 PM

Gamasutra has an interesting interview with two producers from Tecmo's Team Ninja (best known for the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series). As many of you know, Team Ninja's Tomonobu Itagaki left the company amidst scandal and controversy. The move was particularly unusual for a Japanese developer, where brash and outspoken personalities are definitely not the norm. Gamasutra talks with Hitoshi Hasegawa and Yosuke Hayashi about the post-Itagaki era at Team Ninja, development philosophy differences on the three major consoles, and its experiment on the Nintendo DS. Here are some interesting tidbits.

On what Team Ninja has been up since Itagaki's departure, Hasegawa said:

"We've been taking some time reformatting and reorganizing our team around, but one thing for sure is that we know what our focus and our concentration and our team goals and objectives are. We've been using time recently in order to make sure that that's what we want to do, and continue to work on existing and future projects."

On Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword's tepid reaction in North America, Hayashi said:

"As a product from a development, concept, and content standpoint, the team is very happy and satisfied with what we were able to achieve and put in the final product. However, we do feel that we fell a little short in trying to communicate that, and have more gamers play what we were able to put in that final product.

It just wasn't the right sort of natural chemistry. It wasn't enough. But we're up for those kinds of challenges, to provide a new and unique way of playing for a given console. Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword was a perfect example of that, in providing a hardcore action game experience on a portable machine. That was our challenge at the time, but we'll continue to look at similar challenges in the future."

On developing games exclusively for one console, Hayashi said:

"I agree that if we work exclusively with one console that the final product will be a better game than if we were to create it simultaneously for multiple platforms.

Each system has its own philosophy behind it, so it's a matter if you can concentrate and focus 100 percent to adapt to that, or if you're going to have to balance that out with other titles."

The thing that makes LittleBigPlanet so powerful when it comes to user-generated content is that every level in Media Molecule's game was created in the same editor that every player can utilize. This creates an environment for both casual tinkerers and aspiring developers, but the tutorials only cover the basics.

Here are four videos that begin to explore some of the basic devices you can make using what you learned in the tutorials.

Part 1: Elevators, Springs, and Pistons

Hit the break the next three parts and learn about things like swings, catapults, and vehicles.

Turns out that the rumors were true! Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are indeed coming to Mercenaries 2: World in Flames as playable characters in an upcoming update.

Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb revealed the news just moments ago on X-Play in the Gaming Update.

Tom Stratton of Pandemic Studios gave the following statement to X-Play:

"Mercenaries 2 is a game seemingly ripped straight out of today's headlines and fueled with the same type of over-the-top action found in the best summer blockbuster films. It only makes sense we inject the game with a spin on current affairs. The timing was too good to let pass.

If you missed the Gaming Update where the story broke, you can find that video under the cut.

'LittleBigPlanet' Servers Still Having Issues
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Thursday, October 30, 2008 11:48 AM

Since its launch in the US, the servers for Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet have been experiencing problems. The servers, which are currently down, would allow gamers to share their creations and play multiplayer.

Fortunately, even with the server instability, you can still play through the single-player game and create levels without the servers online. The beta did not suffer these problems, though we did experience a good amount of lag while playing with other players during the test.

"We are aware that the online environment of LittleBigPlanet is having server performance issues, and we are investigating the cause," said Sony in a statement made to Eurogamer. "We'll have an update to the online gameplay as soon as we possibly can."

Poor Sackboy.

Atari Crosses The Streams
Posted By: Raymond Padilla - Thursday, October 30, 2008 7:03 AM

Variety has reported that Atari has picked up the rights to Ghostbusters and Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. The former is slated for a summer 2009 release to coincide with the movie's 25th anniversary, while the latter is set for a spring 2009 launch. Variety's Ben Fritz writes:

"Deal is one of the most significant for Atari since it came back from the brink of bankruptcy earlier this year by securing new capital funds and recruiting an experienced team of videogame execs."

It's not surprising that these games, both of which sport high-profile licenses, found a new home. What's surprising is that they ended up with Atari. Ex-Sony executive and current Atari president Phil Harrison has indicated that the company would focus on online and social gaming experiences. Picking up two traditional console titles doesn't really fit into that strategy. That said, Harrison is a very smart and very tall (and very bald) man. He has a distinguished history as a videogame exec and knows what he's doing.

Metacritic User Scores Under Siege?
Posted By: James Elkin - Wednesday, October 29, 2008 2:48 PM

Fanboys have sabotaged Metacritic with thousands of negative votes for Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2, two unreleased games that almost nobody has played. As a result, userscores for both are in the basement, and there’s a growing sense that the newly released LittleBigPlanet is being targeted as well.

Metacritic games editor Marc Doyle has responded to the problem in writing, promising to “upgrade the registration requirements… in the near future”. In the meantime, he urges users to focus on Metascores.

While painful to industry executives who believe Metacritic’s content can affect sales, it doesn’t seem to be all that surprising. With the site’s growth, some say this kind of behavior was never a matter of if, but when.

LucasArts drops a unique glimpse at their upcoming, inevitable, Wiimote heavy adventure game, Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels for the Nintendo Wii.

"This video is unique in that it’s taken directly from a deleted scene from the Clone Wars feature film. The development team took a deleted fight scene between Anakin and Ventress and turned it into a unique level and battle in Lightsaber Duels."

Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels tests the limits of your mastery of the Wiimote November 11th.
