Meta tags don't work for all search engines. Plus, who wants to wait around for a search engine's roaming spider to find you? Tell them you're here, with glorious fanfare. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome the site of David Spark."

Here are my top eight search engines and indexes, in no particular order. For more search engines, directories, indexes, and sites that issue Web awards, consult my www.davidspark.com Web promotion journal.

  6. Lycos
  7. Northern Light
  8. WebCrawler

Warning: Spam Attack!

Promoting your site to the public can also expose you to unwanted mail. If you leave your email address, some disreputable directories may sell your personal information to spammers. To avoid an influx of garbage email, you may want to use a secondary email address for your promotional efforts. If you own your own domain name, you have an infinite number of possible email addresses. If you're really thinking ahead and want to nab a site that's selling to spammers, give a different email address to each site and keep track of them in your Web promotion journal. When you get garbage email, you'll know which site sold your address.
